Amazon.com Review

Written by the developers of Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Programmer's Guide gives you a solid overall grounding in the language and the major tasks you will undertake in the development environment. The book is divided into two parts and a series of appendices. The first part introduces the basic concepts of the Visual Basic environment and explains the form- and event-driven paradigm. Five chapters later, the authors explain forms, controls, and projects and give a quick primer on the unique structure of the Visual Basic language, its data types, and its use of functions, procedures, and code modules. The second part, "What You Can Do with Visual Basic," makes up the majority of the book. A chapter on user-interface creation illustrates how to create single and multiple-document interfaces and how to implement dialogs and toolbars, and presents some general user-interface tips. Following chapters cover each of the Visual Basic custom controls, present advanced project-compilation concepts, and introduce the object-oriented features of Visual Basic. The guide then presents ActiveX components, event and error handling, text and graphics manipulation, performance optimization, and other crucial topics. Four appendices spell out Visual Basic's limits, coding conventions, compiler options, and how to add help to your programs. No matter what your skill level, this programmer's guide will become a frequently visited companion. --Stephen Plain

Its a great reference for a legacy language. I know I can find information online but having a book reference is easier for my work flow.

Great Vintage old school Books Cheap

OK

Very helpful. The book was in good condition and at a great price.

Love it and thanks! :)

If you are a programmer and looking for a good guide and/or reference, do not buy this book! The examples are few and not very good. The book does not go beyond VB in explainations, or lead you to additional reference material. Don't waste your money.

I am well pleased with it.

This poor book always is getting slammed by someone somewhere. Why, I don't know. It is not the greatest book in the world on Visual Basic programming nor does it try to be. It is a reference work for the user of the language. In some cases it does a wonderful job of teaching the basics of VB programming. I don't think it would be my first choice as a beginning book if you have never programmed in any language before; however, if you have been programming with other languages this is a great intro to VB.There are times when it starts to get a bit dry and sometimes it does leave one going "and the point is?", but in general I find this to be a well designed and well spoken text on the language. One can find it bundled with VB and "VB Step by Step" from Microsoft and after reading both books goodness knows how many times, I think the Programmer's Guide in many ways is superior to "Step by Step".A must read for anyone who considers themselves a VB programmer, this is not the best intro for a novice, but is a great primer for an experienced programmer or one who has some experience with Visual Basic and is ready to go beyond the basics laid out in an intro book.

Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood, by Jeffrey Marx

From Booklist

When Pulitzer-winning investigative reporter Marx was a kid in the 1970s, he was a ballboy for the Baltimore Colts. One of the team captains was Joe Ehrmann, a larger-than-life party guy and star defensive lineman. After the death of his younger brother, Ehrmann changed his life, working in Baltimore's inner city and eventually becoming an ordained minister. Prompted by an article about the demolition of the Colt's legendary Memorial Stadium, Marx reconnected with Ehrmann and became fascinated both with his ministry and his work as a volunteer football coach at a Baltimore private school. This account of Ehrmann's career--and his effect on Marx's life--is inspirational without being preachy. Most amazing are the stories of the team Ehrmann coaches--a football team on which life lessons are more important than tackling fundamentals. The lessons extend to Marx himself, who describes how he was moved by Ehrmann's example to work on his relationship with his father. A sports story, yes, but much more, too. Jeffrey Marx is a Pulitzer Prize winning author (for investigative reporting, not for this book), who takes on the question of what it means to be a man in our society. He does this by following former Baltimore Colt defensive tackle Joe Ehrmann for a year while Ehrmann helped coach a Maryland high school football team. This team has two goals each season – to win the league championship and to beat their rival high school. But their methods, well, that’s the point of the book. The book focuses on the coaches’ goal of Building Men for Others and on the mantra that everyone on the team memorizes: What is the coach’s job? To love the players. What is the player’s job? To love each other. This is not football as most fans see it, but what does it do to the kids on the team?As Marx tells the story, it builds character, it builds strong and positive relationships, it heals pain, and it Builds Men for Others. In a time when gender roles are changing radically, Marx presents an image of masculinity that is neither traditional (one might think of “a man’s man”) nor revisionist. Instead, it present an image of both strength and vulnerability, an image of individual character and of team character. Although Marx began this quest as a detached investigator and as an author, he closes the book by describing neither what happened to Ehrmann nor what happened to the players on the team; he closes the book by describing how the experience affected himself. The book is very well written and it is easy to read (as one might expect from a Pulitzer Prize winning author). It takes about 2-3 hours to read. It is a good book for anybody interested in exploring what it means to be a man in our society, for example, a sports coach or a new father of a young son.

This is an outstanding book, so outstanding that my daughter and I are going to have a book discussion group with my two teen grandsons with the book as the focus. My younger teen grandson is passionate about football, plays on his high school team. In fact it was the Senior Coach at his high school that recommended this book. But the book is more than about football, it is about building character in young men. This is why both boys need to absorb the lessons that this book teaches. The author is a Pulitzer Prize winner; that exemplifies the books quality. It is very easy to read, with great stories told from life. The lessons taught though are like a secular Sunday school without being preachy. It's all about learning what true manhood is, building real character and integrity. As a big plus, the author shines a light on the false values of professional football and society in general. Really excellent, highest recommendation.

This is a very thought provoking project that Joe E. has undertaken, and one that could significantly change the world if more people were to see how important it is. What he is undertaking is Bible based apparently, but to my understanding it is more a translation of the very heart of the Bhagavad Gita and the Six Workhorse Principles which are the core of the Gita, which is all about change, Being and becoming, change in the direction of our Reality, our Self or spirit, i.e. becoming more like what we truly are: Spirit, Satchitananda (Being /Consciousness/ Bliss), Self, with a capital S, and away from self , small "s", the ego self, the unreal ghost with which we mistakenly identify. That is what this book is really about: change. Change initiated by Paster Joe E. in the hopes that these football players, the recipients of the coaching, will be changed and make a better world. It is a wonderful project, and book about this project.

It is difficult to pick up a newspaper or watch TV news without seeing some story about a young man in serious trouble with the law. It seems that too many of our male youth are growing up without good role models. There is a direct connection between the way a young man is raised, the values instilled in his youth and the type of life he leads as an adult.Season of Life, written by Jeffrey Marx, is the story of Joe Ehrmann, a former NFL star with the then Baltimore Colts and his journey from football to an outstanding mentor for young men. Mr. Ehrmann's life was profoundly changed when his younger brother died at an early age from a rare form of cancer. His brother's death caused Mr. Ehrmann to totally rethink what was important in life.Joe became an ordained minister. He has devoted his life to helping young men get a better chance in life by providing a different style of coaching at the high school level. Most coaches focus on the Xs and the Os of the game, and the won loss record. Joe focuses on teaching the young boys to become the kind of men that will lead a highly productive life as an adult. As of the writing of this book, we was coaching a high school football team. He was also very active in coaching other coaches in his approach.According to Mr. Ehrmann, there are three major myths that most boys are taught about becoming a man. The first is that athletic ability is the initial step. The second is that sexual conquest is a big part of the process and the final myth concerns financial success. Relationships and love are downplayed. Men are taught to be stoic, to hide or suppress their emotions.Mr. Ehrmann teaches his players that the won loss record is not what matters most. What matters most is learning to be a man. Developing 360 integrity - that is integrity all round at all times.Even for those boys who have a good father role model, there are often emotional issues that need addressing. Most men teach their sons to be strong - they were taught not to be emotionally sensitive and that is the way they raise their sons. Too often the father is hiding behind a facade and is afraid to open up emotionally to their sons. As a result, many sons never really know their father. This book is short and easy to read. It is well written and filled with lots of emotional moments. You will come away with a different perspective on what it means to be a man. You will also have a better understanding of why the normal focus of raising boys has been wrong. You will see the connection between the way boys are raised and how they turn out. There is a large segment of our male youth who do not have good father role models. As a society we are paying a very high price in terms of social problems for these young men. This is a great way to improve the problem with a minimum cost.

Review

"Ms. Cheng's chatty tone keeps things fresh. She has a knack for folksy analogies, and at different points in the book she illuminates different properties of infinity by discussing Legos, the iPod Shuffle, snorkeling, Battenberg cakes and Winnie-the-Pooh... she does a great service by showing us non-mathematician schlubs how real mathematical creativity works." --Wall Street Journal "Our minds cannot truly grasp the concept of infinity, but Eugenia Cheng takes us on a wild journey to help us in our search for it. It's a small, unassuming symbol, but it holds a giant idea. Cheng helps us understand the basics of infinity and then takes us on a ride to see its most lofty applications. From the practical to the entirely theoretical, this is a book to watch for." --Paste Magazine "The idea of infinity is one of the most perplexing things in mathematics, and the most fun. Eugenia Cheng's Beyond Infinity is a spirited and friendly guide--appealingly down to earth about math that's extremely far out."―Jordan Ellenberg, author of How Not to Be Wrong and professor of mathematics at University of Wisconsin-Madison"Beyond Infinity is witty, charming, and crystal clear. Eugenia Cheng's enthusiasm and carefully chosen metaphors and analogies carry us effortlessly through the mathematical landscape of the infinite. A brilliant book!"―Ian Stewart, author of Calculating the Cosmos PRAISE FOR EUGENIA CHENG"[Cheng] conveys the spirit of inventiveness and creativity in math... Refreshing is the word that keeps coming to mind."―Steven Strogatz, as quoted in the New York Times"Dr. Cheng...has a knack for brushing aside conventions and edicts, like so many pie crumbs from a cutting board."―Natalie Angier, New York Times"[Eugenia Cheng's] tone is clear, clever and friendly. Even at her most whimsical she is rigorous and insightful... [She is] a lucid and nimble expositor."―Alex Bellos, New York Times Book Review

Perfect reading material for a visit to Hilbert's Hotel (which has unlimited rooms and hence unlimited spaces in which to read), Eugenia Cheng's new book is an absolute delight. Cheng explores the bizarre implications of the infinite, and shows how not all infinities are the same. Her sense of humor is extraordinary and the examples highly imaginative, making the book a pleasure to read. For example, she compares the power of mathematicians to that of a spoiled child who must face the consequences of asking for (and promptly being eaten by) a pet lion; be careful what you wish for is the valuable lesson. Cheng makes mathematics seem so fun, I can imagine the book inspiring many young readers to pursue careers in the field. All in all, a book as entertaining as the works of Lewis Carroll.-Paul Halpern, author of The Quantum Labyrinth: How Richard Feynman and John Wheeler Revolutionized Time and Reality

I seem to be badly out of step with the current trend in popular science books. The chatty style in this one, including anecdotes from the author's personal life, did not grab me at all. I had the same feeling about a book on the fine structure constant, and my review on that has been poorly received. I have the same feeling about the two books: no worries at all about the expertise of the authors or the science contained in the books. Personally, though, I'd rather put the chat to one side and concentrate on the science. The other reviews of this book (and that) suggest that they are doing a good job in communicating science to the lay reader and I thoroughly approve of such an achievement. So, well done for that, and I'll face up to being out of step.

This book gets pretty abstract at times, and the examples that the author provides are not very good at providing clarity. (Maybe there is no way to make this topic clear though to non-mathematics folks). Having majored in mathematics in college, the book made sense to me and I understood most if not all. The Hilbert Hotel example which I have read about before was well described. However, the chapter on dimensions in mathematics was not very useful or interesting. Einstein has pretty much proven that the fourth dimension is time with his theory of relativity and the examples in this chapter were kind of lame. I would suggest that only those folks who have studied math and are interested in math should read this book.

If you have an interest in mathematics and don't mind stretching your mind in unusual ways this is a great book

I got about 40 pages in and found it kind of boring. I am an engineer by profession, so it wasn't a distaste for math that made me feel that way -- I just felt she was taking too long to build up to the points she was trying to make.

Very good

Eugenia Cheng’s book on infinity is a delightful, deceptively sophisticated introduction to math’s most mind-bending topic. It covers ground that math lovers will find familiar (e.g., Zeno’s paradoxes, Cantor’s theory of transfinite numbers, diverging and converging series, Hilbert’s Hotel, Dedekind and Cantor’s constructions of real numbers). But its artful explanations are highly original—Cheng has a rare knack for translating challenging mathematical abstractions into easily-grasped terms through the use of concrete metaphors and down-to-earth analogies. In one of my favorite examples, she deftly elucidates the strange nature of infinite ordinal numbers by describing the key ideas involved in terms of the amount of hassle involved in accommodating extra guests at an infinitely large hotel. (The Hilbert.) I was also charmed by her explanations of exponential growth in terms of puff pastry (and I learned some interesting baking lore along the way), by her referring to the iPod Shuffle to explain factorial growth, and by her explanation of how to make an infinitely long line of cookies with a (weirdly) finite amount of dough. Superb analogies like these are invaluable for helping non-experts get their minds around math concepts, and dreaming them up requires a special talent for isolating the essence of abstract ideas and figuring out how to put them in familiar terms. (Which I know from personal experience is a lot harder than it looks.) Few writers on math I’ve run across are as good at this as Cheng. I found her book almost shockingly readable, and she engagingly conveys her sense of delight about the mathematical enterprise throughout—it’s baked with joy.

When I read in the introduction that the author works in the area of category theory, I got all excited thinking that the tale would eventually lead there. Nope, that is the last we hear about category theory. the rest of the book does not even cover what I heard about infinity during my first year of college. A few of Cheng's metaphors are indeed useful for illustrating some aspects of the subject, but I was hoping to find out something new about infinity, and there I was left feeling short-changed.

I've lived in Minnesota twice now. Once I lived in Duluth and then I lived in Minneapolis. I preferred Duluth, which is prettier and has more to do for those interested in the outdoors. The people up North are nicer too. Minnesota is a weird place and now it has a book to prove it. If you enjoy traveling to different places, either by car, plane or via armchair, and like the unusual, then this is a book for you. Learn all about the weird in Minnesota and not just about the people. Some stories aren't weird, just not common. All in all, an interesting read.

We knew nothing about Minnesota when we took a trip there this year and this book gave us a lot of info on the various sights to see. You'll get a laugh, while learning about the state. I bought the MA one, next and learned a lot about my own state. We met the author and enjoyed the stories about how he discovered the "weirdness" of the state.

We enjoy looking through this book a lot. There is a wide array of information and descriptions that we found very enjoyable. My husband is from MInnesota, and still spent a lot of time leaving through this book for new places to visit.

Fun book for Minnesota Buffs! Traveled a lot with my family by camper and saw many famous places in Minnesota!

The weird books are hard to put down. There's more to see in the states than you think. It's an interesting history book.

Not put together very well, cover came off book the first day we opened it. Otherwise the contents is fun.

Great gift for a kid from Minnesota he loved it. Fun present.

Awesome factual book about Minnesota!

A great collection of stories and voices from a wide range of up and coming writers. I think everyone can find at least a few stories in here that they can relate to or that will feel terrifyingly familiar to them. Definitely worth picking up!

My 15yo has really enjoyed this one!

I thought that LOVE & PROFANITY would be like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, filled with true banal stories with cute twists and funny endings. I thought the stories would be about teens who were older than me (at 16, I still have a lot to learn about the trials of teenage life), and that I wouldn’t relate to them. I was wrong --- the stories struck me as honest and relevant.Unfortunately, I didn’t come to appreciate this until I was a quarter into the book because the introduction was a bit misleading --- it highlighted a few of the stories, but it didn’t explain why they were all placed together in the same book. I suppose it was my job to solve the case. The table of contents split the stories up into four groups: “Love and Profanity,” “Love and Physics,” “Love and Madness” and “Love and Apologies.” Honestly, I could have placed any of the stories into any of these very broad categories. I would have preferred that the editor split them according to the age of the writer, or if they had just been divided into parts one through four.I received the uncorrected proof of the book, which didn’t include writers’ bios or an index. This was troubling at first, but once I got about half of the way through, I was glad I could read the stories without being influenced by the authors’ backgrounds.Happily, I loved most of the stories and I did figure out why they all fit into one book: they did not tell you what teenage life should be like, but they showed you what it is like. None of the authors begged the reader to learn from their mistakes. Rather, they shared a bit about themselves in hopes that you would listen. From the title and cover I did not know that this book would be one of the sweetest and most terrifyingly authentic things I've read. None of the stories were groundbreaking or shocking; they were simply beautiful and honest. For example, “Confession” by Anika Fajardo highlighted the butterflies of a first crush. She wonderfully described feelings that we have all felt before, explaining “[t]he thought of saying his name out loud—even in the dark, even to my best friend—made me feel like I was standing in my underwear in homeroom.” On a more serious note, “A Most Dangerous Game” by Alexis Wiggins showed me that girls don’t know that the world is a game more dangerous than they think, and they are more naive than they know. After she recalls her childhood of hoping boys would like her, wearing dresses with a stuffed bra and high heels, she tells us about the time she was almost raped, and how the world had ill-prepared her for this. She writes, “and you felt lighter-fluid flames of anger rise in you at the teacher who taught the wrong lesson. Or at the girl in the back row, in her cheap dress and scuffed heels, drawing hearts around boys’ names, hoping.” This story (confusingly categorized in “Love and Physics) sent chills down my spine.I would love if a future edition updated the introduction and table of contents, so readers don’t feel confused and assume mediocrity. Because really, these are undeniably genuine and heartfelt stories --- teen readers, give them a try!Reviewed by Maya B.

Love & Profanity edited by Nick Healy(2.84 rounded to) 3 starsThis is another short story analogy/ essay collection that had the potential to be great but fell flat. Love & Profanity revolves around author essays on true events in their lives. I haven’t read any essay anthologies before this, but I know that several out there, like Bully, exist and are highly acclaimed in hopes that young readers will pick them up seeing high profile authors’ names on the covers. It’s a good marketing skill, but I don’t think I know almost any of these authors. Almost all of them are names I’ve never heard of before and I think that lessened my connection. I have a theory that if I know what an author writes like and follow them on social media then I’ll be more likely to enjoy reading snippets of their teen lives and experiences. Since I knew almost none of these authors, I’m putting stock into that theory for this anthology (I’ll test that theory with Bully later on). This collection is huge- 84 stories- if I counted correctly and most of the essays are brief. I think the longest one was ten or twelve pages so it’s hard to judge writing style completely for every story, but I had my trusty notebook and pink pen handy while reading and was able to chronicle all my thoughts while reading. (It’s a good thing I did that since I read this collection literally one year ago.) My formatting will be the essay, rating, brief thoughts, and then some research I compiled on the author.Three Stories About Water & Vomiting by Adam Rex- 1 starI personally wasn’t impressed by this story. I considered it to be lame and irrelevant and probably the worst way to start a collection of essays. The first story should be good enough to make me want to keep going, no lackluster enough to make me question continuing with the collection because it makes me question how good the rest will be.After Teen Years- Besides having a dinosaur last name, Adam doesn’t focus his genre writings to dinosaurs, but illustrious characters such as vampires and Frankenstein. His most famous novel is The True Meaning of Smekday, which is MG science fiction. He also wrote Fat Vampire, which his only story I ever heard of.Breathless by Heather Sellers- 2 starsApparently this essay touches on all the things that I consider to be very unsafe. After Teen Years-Sellers is predominately a writer of short stories and creative writing non-fiction. Her most famous piece of work is a memoir focusing on her neurological condition that prevents her from remembering peoples’ faces.Girl Fight by Joey Franklin- 3 starsInteresting perspective on what a young man thought about the label of “fat” and dating a fat girl. After Teen Years- Franklin made his debut in 2015 with a collection of essays surrounding what it’s like to be a middle-aged white man with balding hair.Power Drift by Jon Scieszka- 1 starWhat an idiot. After Teen Years- This man writes a lot of essays, and children’s stories. He has over 144 distinct works on GR- impressive.Polypropylene by Ali Catt- 4 starsPretty sad that this captures how a lot of teen girls treat each other. After Teen Years-Only featured in Love & Profanity and I can’t find anything about her. Elusive. Why Is It Wet Here? By Carrie Mesrobian- 3 starsA pretty funny story about a party and a party failure. After Teen Years- She’s the writer of Sex & Violence (which I’m excited to read) and that story from last year that everyone hated called Cut Both Ways.M-E-L-I-S-S-A by Melissa Brandt- 3.5 starsEssay about a girl who is very unattached from her father. After Teen Years- Debut author of a novel called Chased by Fame.I Don’t Believe You by Clint Edwards- 2.5 starsAn embarrassing story about Edwards crapping his pants in high school. Poor soul. After Teen Years- Debut author of a collection humorous nonfiction piece on parenting and marriage.Vietnam, Minnesota by Pete Hautman- 2 starsA story about him befriending a Vietnam vet and going way too fast in a speeding car. After Teen Years- This guy has written a lot of novels in the YA and MG genre. I checked out his novel Sweetblood once at the library during my vampire phase and never read it.Island Girls by Kasandra Duthie- 2 starsThe story focuses on Duthie’s teen years on two islands. After Teen Years- She’s featured in this anthology. The Ranks of a Million Guys by Kwame Alexander- 1 starFocuses on Alexander’s experience on becoming the number one tennis player in hopes of impressing the girl he likes. After Teen Years- A writer of poems, children’s books, and YA fiction in free verse form. This guy won a Newbery!Confession by Anika Fajardo- 2 starsShe confesses her crush to her best friend and then ends the essay with a sentence about dying at the dance? After Teen Years- She’s a nonfiction writer.First Gear by Melodie Heide- 3.5 starsAfter recently losing her mother, Heide finds solace in a guy who kind of likes her back. After Teen Years- According to Amazon, her work has appeared in numerous publications. She writes about transient life. The First Time I Had Sex, My Mouth Was Numb by Kyra Anderson- 4.5 starsOne of the most awkward and truthful representations of first time sex plus it has a killer title. After Teen Years- She’s a mother of an autistic child and collaborated on a project about what it’s like.Ambushed by Andrew Gottlieb- 2.5 starsThe story focuses on Gottlieb’s experiences working on a painting team during the summer as a teenager. After Teen Years- He’s a writer of reviews, poems, essays, and memoirs.A Ghost in the Mall by Natalie Singer -4 starsA reflection of Singer going to the mall after school and not being able to buy anything due to her poor family life and being blessed with an okay-face; a very touching story. After Teen Years- Her author profile is to funny to not just copy and paste: “Natalie Singer was born and half-raised in Montreal, Canada, before being uprooted and moved―at age 16―to the mythical, ice-cream-colored land of California, where she had to finish raising herself. There, she discovered burritos, tried to become cool on the streets of San Francisco, and made out with lots of frogs before she finally found a prince. She's now a writer in Seattle.”A Most Dangerous Game by Alexis Wiggins- 5 starsMy favorite essay of the collection! Essay focusing on the perils of being a young woman and has a chilling scene where her co-worker says that someday he’ll rape someone and it could be Wiggins.“It wasn’t men who were hunted.”After Teen Years- She’s been writing since she was little, but has yet to publish a novel. I think this is her first time being published in a book! The Causeway by Margaret MacInnis- 3 starsFocuses on when Margaret is eight-years-old and sees her father not being able to do the things he used to because of age. After Teen Years- She has a lot of essays published in review publications and that’s cool.Orchard by Kim Lozano- 2.5 starsEssay about the time she offers a place to stay for a young lady who seems to be on the run. After Teen Years- She’s an editor of a literary magazine and teaches creative writing. Her poetry has been published.Weightless by Steve Brezenoff- 2 starsBrezenoff was a wallflower who attended a party. After Teen Years- This is the only author who I knew by name for sure because I used to want to read his book The Absolute Value of-1.After the Party by Geoff Herbach- 1 starI honestly have no clue what even happened in this essay. After Teen Years- He has a lot of published YA novels and his most popular is the title Stupid Fast.On the Third Day by Tom Moran- 2.5 starsDirty fighting! After Teen Years- Has a humorous novel called Dinosaurs and Prime Numbers. How to Succeed by Actually Trying by Dayna Evans- 3 starsDiscusses Evans meeting full potential as an already smart student and pushing herself. After Teen Years- She’s been published in two essay collections.Ten Years Ago by Sarah Beth Childers- 3.5 starsA deep essay focuses on ten years ago from Childer’s perspective and then twenty years as time goes by.After Teen Years- Write short stories and has been featured in two YA ones and her own essay collection.End of the Half by Patrick Hueller- 1 starFocuses on Hueller’s coach getting mad at his failure of a basketball team. After Teen Years- He has a few published indie works.Suspended by Kyle Minor- 1.5 starsWhen Minor finally got rid of one bully he gets cornered by his brother. After Teen Years- He has several short stories and novellas published into personal collections.Girl/Thing by Anna Vodicka- 3.5 starsThe story focuses on Vodicka’s experience as a babysitter and being taken advantage of by the father. After Teen Years- It says in her profile she’s doesn’t miss babysitting. It’s funny, but it’s not because of the incident she went through.Saying Goodbye to Anna by Jackie Buckle- 5 starsI just realized the author above the before story is named Anna; did they do that on purpose?Another absolute favorite about “Anna” or anorexia and it was absolutely harrowing and beautiful. After Teen Years- She wrote something called Half My Facebook Friends are Ferrets and lol.The Catch by Melissa Cistaro- 1.5 starsThe mother finds beauty in fish guts? The one that popped up on my galley copy and then the rereleased cover. I like the newest one best.Thank you, Netgalley and Switch Press for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Love & Profanity is a fascinating collection of short stories about love, life, and growing up as seen through the eyes of a teenager. The selected authors tell stories from their respective teenage years and allow for the reader to relate to at least one if not more of the experiences told.Although my high school years are behind me, I found myself able to relate to the stories of lost friendships and peer pressure. The feeling of being the only person in a room full of people. Love & Profanity is written for the young adult audience, but I believe it is a must read for people of all ages. It helps you look back on those formative years and allows you to realize that you survived and that not everything was as awful as it seemed. It may even provide some closure for some readers. I know I found myself relating to the story of a girl who lost her best friend to the "popular" clique. A common occurrence for many a teenager and a story that shows how it can be a haunting loss for some time, even when you believe you've moved on.This is a well written collection of stories and, as I stated, it is a book for readers of all demographics. It is a book of how we all grow up and face life and whatever it may throw at us.http://novelideareviews.blogspot.com/2015/10/love-profanity-by-various-authors.html

Review

I strongly recommend this book if you'd like to explore the heavens with your camera. So head outdoors and record the wonder of our planet, solar system, and galaxies. The film's cheap, and there's no reason to ever sleep again! (National Parks Traveler)The techniques are well explained and lead readers through the process ... Photo tips the authors impart include photographing star trails, moon phases and twilight; capturing phenomena such as auroras, noctilucent clouds and those mercurial meteors. (Oregonlive.com)

A great guide for night sky photography. Simple and to the point. Not a lot of "filler". Perfect size to take on the go. I have been in the photography business for over 30 years and this book taught me a few new things, yet it's also a great book for the not so experienced photographer. If you want to get out there and shoot the night sky...look no further! Jennifer Wu nailed it!

Very nice overview with practical information on how to plan and prepare for night photography. However, there are a number of key topics that are missing or only lightly touched upon. In planning for a night shoot the use of apps such as PhotoPills are an essential tool in conjunction with GPS apps. The guide only provides a high level pass at post processing and doesn't discuss tools such as stacking images to increase the signal to noise ratio. And, the guide doesn't talk at all about using tracking devices with your camera. So, a good basic overview for the novice.

I always loved photography and planned on one day getting a nice camera and taking some wonderful shots of the sky but when I did they looked nothing like the ones I see online so I bought this book and while I'm no where near a pro thankfully I can now take some beautiful pictures showing the milky way, I can paint with light, and I can make star trails.

Jennifer Wu is an amazing nature and landscape photographer, truly an artist. She has taken some of the most beautiful photographs of the night sky including the Milky Way galaxy, the aurora borealis, and the moon (go to her website and look at her portfolio). Now with this book she teaches how to take extraordinary nighttime landscapes with your DSLR, capturing the beauty of the night sky and revealing more majesty than our eyes can see! This book is detailed, and organized to answer all your questions, it provides important information about post processing using Photoshop and Lightroom working with the RAW files to achieve the highest quality. After reading this book, I went out on a perfectly clear night before dawn and took some of the most amazing photographs I ever have. This book has opened up a new world of photographic possibilities to me. If you have looked with awe at beautiful night landscape photographs such as those taken by Jennifer Wu and wondered exactly how to do it, wonder no longer, this book explains everything!

This book is really good. I doubt anyone could do better. Everything you can think of is covered. Very few people will master everything in this book. That being said, it is written in plain English and easy to understand. There is just a lot of stuff. You will never have to buy another book. This is really for a serious photographer. Someone with a sturdy tripod, an SLR (preferably full frame) with high ISO, and a good wide angle lens or lenses.

I am a novice photographer and have never taken any formal courses or training in photography. My interest in photography is as a hobby and as I am a physician I have limited free time so I needed a nuts and bolts guide to get me on the right track. Right out of the box I took this book and my camera gear on a long summer weekend to Beaufort, NC where on a clear night you may still see the Milky Way and wanted to take some long exposure night shots. I spent some time reading this book and dog-eared the pages I needed and once I was set up I was able to shoot manual bulb exposures using my DSLR that I would not have easily done fumbling around on the internet trying to find simple recipes for shooting particular night sky phenomena. I was able to shoot the Milky Way (looks way more impressive on an HD TV than I ever thought it would), star trails, and have since captured several long duration exposures of the International Space Station over my home in Raleigh. One I knew how to set the camera up the only thing I needed to know was what I wanted to shoot and when.Admittedly, these techniques are quite simple once you understand how to set-up the camera. The thing I lacked was a "guru" who could simply provide the "secrets" on how to take the shots. This book met my needs and as the title indicates, it is a field guide.

Fabulous, easy to understand field guide for night photography! Jennifer covers many, many aspects of night photography - not just star trails and the moon... Very informative, includes "settings to start with" for most applications. She goes into enough detail so that you can understand and implement the technique, but in a way that is not so technical that you are confused. This is an excellent reference and field guide that will always be in my bag as my "go to" reference for night shooting!

Well writen, with a lot of personas and very useful tips.Lots of pics .I star reading night photograph since ISO 800 film . I made and used my “absolut accurate” woden self made star tracker .It was imperative to manualy rotante it for at least 2 or 4 min, to get waht we have today w/ ISO 8000 30sec f2.0 !!!Great begining book!
