Reviewed by Jaycee for BOOKS 'N COZY SPOTS BOOK REVIEWS, www.Talon-ps.com~ 3.5 Stars ~I have been on the look out for some time now, for a non-fiction, “here’s what you might want to look for” BDSM primer (for lack of a better word), authored by a submissive. There is a plethora of books out there written by Dominants, most dealing with recognizing Dominance and how to be a Dominant. There are even books about a Dominant’s perspective on submission and submissives, but ever the recalcitrant reader with zero inclination to Dominant outlook or tendencies, that was never satisfactory for me. Even asking from within the lifestyle, most recommended reference material was from a Dominant’s perspective, or at the very least a co-perspective.I didn't want to know what a Dominant thought a submissive should think, dammit, I wanted to know what a submissive thought, felt and discovered. I wanted a relatable frame of reference for what was “okay” for a submissive to think and feel and want and do. Even though, intellectually I already knew the answers, I wanted to hear it from the horse’s mouth so to speak; to feel it from the submissive’s heart.I got that here. There were no great revelations, and as I said, I don’t think I really expected any. But that in itself is a confirmation and a comfort. Ms. Kinsey is a strong, aware and no-nonsense woman who happens to be firmly comfortable with both her journey and her destination. Her sometimes humorous accounts and her words-of-wisdom-to-live-and-submit-by were reinforcement. Yet at the same time she exhibits a sage and understanding look at the interactions of, and with the world around the world in which she lives. So this book itself, while not revelatory, gave me the inputs I was looking for from an insider who remembers what it was like to be an outsider. The truth is, many are and will always be outsiders, but the need for even those people to understand if not embrace the lifestyle is, in a way, almost as important today as for those who do seek to enter in.As an observation, it has been surprisingly difficult to ask and get answers, particularly when you aren’t even really sure what the questions are. Statements such as those in the Amazon blurb above (“This is not fiction, but reality. Kate Kinsey has the experience to tell it like it is, not the way some vanilla writer imagines it to be” or “enjoying an intimacy and satisfaction in their relationships that vanilla folk only dream of”) are actually barriers to understanding, or more importantly to seeking understanding, at a time when understanding is critical to both those questioning their own orientation and to positively influencing the tide of public opinion for those who are not. As a reader and reviewer of the aforementioned (I’d say ‘aforemaligned’ but its not a word) romantic fiction, I’d like to come to well-informed conclusions as to the merits of the work I review. Nothing is less productive or in fact, more offensive, than uninformed opinion. To imply in commentary that “vanilla folk” are somehow less fulfilled, is to simply apply reverse barriers, and is ineffective in the quest for progress.Fortunatley, Ms. Kinsey herself has filled my personal bill and has relatably illustrated how fundamental both her journey as a submissive has been for her, has provided a sage and sane guide to others so inclined, and has imparted what I hope is seen as one of many wonderful tools of enlightenment for those outside who simply need/want to understand, if not adopt.

I got into this world by accident. I met a guy and he proposed the Master / Slave dynamic. It was so new to me but I was willing to try. As it turns out, being a 24/7 slave is not my cup of tea but I learned that I do desire submission. I happened to meet a couple who is very active in the community, who I feel incredibly safe with. They have educated me on a lot of things thus far. This book was spot on, or my friends were spot on. Either way the content and points was verbatim. It builds my trust even more in my friends and myself. I agree with some of the reviews, that a few points are obvious but many are just aspects I never thought of. I really appreciate this book. Thank you Kate Kinsey.

Great book for those who are interested in learning about BDSM or just starting out. Defines terms, discusses safety precautions, gives what one can expect when joining in a community, and provides solid links to other information and websites. Author is a long-term community participant in a submissive role who has been with the same dominant for more than a decade. Well-written, humorous and honest. Discusses those who join in occasionally or on a regular basis and those who live the lifestyle 24/7. I would recommend that anyone considering exploring this lifestyle read this easy and quick to read book as a starting point.

First let me say that if you are thinking about getting into and exploring BDSM as a Submissive please read this book. Even though I have only just barely taken a tentative and shaky first step this book opened my eyes to a wider view of the lifestyle and thankfully has *reigned* me in before I headed blindly into a new and exciting world. If you are thinking about exploring this lifestyle please remember one thing: Don't leave your brain at the door! There are not enough words in the English language to express my thanks to the author. And one more thing, even though this book is written from the perspective of a female submissive all the advice and information still applies to male submissive.

This book is a MUST read for anyone who is thinking about exploring submission in a D/s relationship or for someone curious about all the 'hoopla' about BDSM. Kate lays it out simply and with humor. She KNOWS of what she speaks or in this case writes. I highly suggest this for anyone thinking about what it means to be a submissive, how to navigate the crap found floating all over the internet that is supposed to be 'twue' and clears up misconceptions about what is real and what is fantasy. Share this link with your friends! Don't believe all the nonsense the 50 Shades books ( and the upcoming movie) spew.Kate has dedicated this book to an unfortunate young woman who was murdered by slime balls proclaiming to be BDSM practitioners. They most certainly were not and she apparently didn't have the self knowledge or where with all to extract herself from a situation that went from bad to ultimately resulting in her death. She is not the first and sadly will not be the last. Please read this and be aware. Tell your friends to read this , add this to your personal library, talk about it at meetings. Knowledge is power. Protect your self, be smart, be safe, and have fun.

It's like a map that tells you about the landscape but not a particular road to take. Just some reminders on having a safe trip. This is a simple yet comprehensive introduction to BDSM from a submissive perspective, with an honest and caring tone. It feels like advices from an experienced sis who encourages you to explore, but always be safe and not to rush. Really authentic writing. Not very technical but extremely practical - not in the sense that it goes deep on any play or types of DOM. But in covering terms and "states" awaits for you down the road, a to z. Definitely would recommend to friends, kink or vanilla.

The craftsmanship and beauty of Near Eastern and Oriental carpets is undeniable, but buying them can be a bit daunting. This book is a great resource and introduction to the variety of styles and patterns of these functional works of art. For the absolute novice, the first chapters detail what an oriental rug is and how they are made. Those more familar will want to skip this and get to the meat of the book, detailing care and design. The 49 full-color pictures provide a reference to the patterns, sizes and styles of the various carpets as well as abundant information regarding their place of origin and some history of how and by whom they were made. I found this to be the most useful and fascinating part of the book. The author provides other information such as price range and resale value - given the date of publication (my copy is from the late 1980s) and the normal changes in market and demand, this was less useful in its specifics, but a helpful guide in terms of relative price between styles and origin.

This book was recommended to me by a respected dealer in Persian rugs as not only a good introduction to Persian rugs, but as a very good ongoing reference. I purchased 5 copies of the book for myself and friends. I am now down to only my own personal copy. I consider it an indispensible guide for anyone who wants to learn about Persian rugs, and to some extent, rugs from other regions. I have a number of books on Persian rugs, including some published in Iran pre-1979 and post-1979, as well as the excellent reference book by the Eilands. This one is indispensible and my friends who have it agree! Highly recommended if you can still get it.

I am a newcomer in the world of persian rugs and found this book very useful. The more you read the more you understand that there is an entire world to discover and the author introduces you in this nice exotic world. It is by no means a complete guide on the subject but it is a very good starting point to understand the basics of the subject. I would highly recommend this book before reading other, more massive and detailed books.

As an owner of a small Persian rug shop, BewyacGroup.com, I highly recommend this great read. This book is for anyone fascinated with handmade rugs, their origin and how to find a great deal buying one.

Love it.

Rambling, with extensive history of rugs, but no useful information about oriental rugs

This copy is for a friend. I have used this book to purchase many carpets over the years.

fast shipping of a nice book with nice color photos

All I Want Is a Job!: Unemployed Women Navigating the Public Workforce System

Review

"All I Want is a Job! is an engaging and timely book. It addresses the very pressing issue of the services provided to jobless workers, while also doing an excellent job of placing its findings in historical context." (Ofer Sharone MIT Sloan School of Management)"In this short and very readable narrative, Gatta takes a different and unique approach. Posing as a client at a One-Stop Career Center, she experiences firsthand the trials and tribulations of job seekers. The author interviews the workers in these centers, discovering the difficulties of trying to implement policies set by others and the anxiety and stress in meeting the needs of the unemployed . . . The author concludes that there are no quick fixes, but at the margin there are key shifts to improve the system, which would serve the employed and unemployed alike and contribute to economic recovery and future prosperity . . . Recommended." (J. F. O'Connell CHOICE)"Mary manages to discuss the problems that unemployed women face in finding work, not only from a practical point of view, but also from a personal standpoint. This book illustrates her rare talent for looking at individual concerns alongside bureaucracy with an eye toward reform. While giving us an intimate look inside the public work force system, she constructively suggests ways to improve government initiatives. All I Want Is a Job! is at once an eye opener and a beacon." (Frank Pallone, Jr. New Jersey Congressman)"Gatta's research makes a significant contribution to the literature on the workforce development system as little is known about the One-Stop Career Centers and even less is known about women's experiences at the One-Stop Career Centers. In addition, Gatta's work is unique in its methodology. Whereas many existing studies are quantitative and outcomes-focused, Gatta uses participant observation and focus groups. In doing so, she is able to explore how women are experiencing the workforce development system rather than just how many women were served or obtained employment." (Skye Allmang Social Service Review)"Mary Gatta adds to the literature by focusing on the felt experiences of women at One Stop Career Centers. With qualitative data, Gatta explores the experiences of customers and front line workers at a New Jersey Center . . . With its lens on gender, this book is an important addition to workforce development literature." (Joyce Bialik Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare)"By studying the work of helping others find work, Mary Gatta shifts our attention to the link between government policy and the experiences of unemployed workers seeking work . . . Gatta has pointed to one approach by studying work beyond the employment relation. We would do well to follow her example with other approaches." (Mark Zbaracki IRL Review)"All I Want Is a Job! offers a valuable look inside our nation's main workforce development program. It should be required reading for anyone interested in low-wage work, labor markets, social welfare policy, and economic development."–Stephanie Luce, Gender & Society"This is a special book that gives the reader a real sense of the world of One-Stop Career Centers. Delivering an insider's glimpse into their operation, Gatta's research will spark a serious discussion about the need to change our current system so that it actually meets the needs of those seeking employment." (Henry Plotkin Former Executive Director of the New Jersey State Employment and Training Commission)"Mary Gatta has written a forceful, lucid, and critical guide for women to secure a living wage. Understanding the bewildering hell that is the public workforce system, Mary knowingly helps us to navigate it in order to produce the practical result we all seek: employment. This book is a 'must read' for those who care about lifting women out of poverty!" (Jim McGreevey former Governor of New Jersey)

Shapeshifters: Black Girls and the Choreography of Citizenship, by Aimee Meredith Cox

Review

"Cox shows that “Black girls’ lives matter” and how their voices articulate that.  This ethnographic study of young black women and girls is an essential read and companion to the larger picture of African American lives in urban settings, which are often mired in poverty, crime, and despair.  However, this rare study brings hope rather than hopelessness as it delves into the heart of human expression and gives voice to a will to live beyond any limitations of what poverty may dictate in contemporary North America." (M. Christian Choice Magazine)"This lively book, Cox’s account of her work as a participant-observer in a Detroit homeless shelter for teen girls, reveals both the many obstacles faced by young women of color and the creative ways in which they use self-expression (language, music, fashion, and dance) to find a new way to live otherwise. The stories, harrowing and fascinating, shine a light on the lives of our least empowered citizens—teenage African American girls—while Cox’s thinking helps us see the power of being able to shape-shift." (Anne Fernald Public Books 2016-06-16)"A creative and compelling ethnographic study, Shapeshifters challenges us to revise the ways we think, write, and theorize about young black women, starting with making their voices and self-analyses the subject of the book. Rather than analyzing the girls’ narratives through the lens of academic theories, even those of black feminists, Cox asks that 'we open ourselves up to a conversation with them.'"    (Farah Jasmine Griffin Public Books 2016-11-01)"Shapeshifters is an engaging, powerful read of the lived experience of young Black girls’ lives that intersects with race, class, gender, and agency, providing a fresh perspective on citizenship, change, and standpoint." (Olivia R. Hetzler Gender & Society 2016-02-11)"While so much urban ethnography excludes women altogether, and black women in particular, Shapeshifters centers young black women, not simply as the subject of the book, but as authors of a world. Shapeshifters proceeds from a position in which black life matters, where young women are sharp eyed critics and citizen-subjects all too aware of where their rights and responsibilities are limited or truncated, and further aware (and willing) to adopt the innovative tactics they need to surmount or work around said limitations." (Sameena Mulla Anthropoliteia 2016-09-07)"It is movement—its unpredictability, its interactions with space, and its many evolutions—that organizes Cox’s work and makes it an invaluable contribution to studies of black girlhood, feminist theory, and ethnography." (Danielle Bainbridge TDR: The Drama Review 2016-12-01)"Shapeshifters is a courageous and rich exploration of the lives of power and agency of Black girls and women. . . . A theoretically rich and ethnographically sound body of work." (Denice D. Nabinett Journal of Negro Education 2016-07-01)"Any serious scholar working at the intersection of race and gender, or at the nexus where theories of identity meet conceptualizations of a just and inclusive polity, will benefit from taking the time to engage with Cox’s work."   (John L. Jackson Jr Chronicle of Higher Education 2018-10-31)

Review

"In this powerful book, Aimee Meredith Cox boldly re-conceptualizes the very meaning of 'public anthropology' in the twenty-first century. With vibrant, nuanced, and crackling ethnographic material, Shapeshifters offers a poignant telling of these women's stories." (John L. Jackson, Jr., author of Thin Description: Ethnography and the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem)"In this powerful and passionate book Aimee Meredith Cox communicates important messages about the integrity and humanity of black girls, their potential, and the ways this potential is variously thwarted, squeezed, bounced, and redirected. Rich in detail and at times hilarious, painful, and revealing, Cox's ethnography provides an account of the ways girls move through the obstacle course of poverty, racism, and gender violence to create and imagine lives for themselves." (Elizabeth Chin, author of Purchasing Power: Black Kids and American Consumer Culture)

Shapeshifters is a masterfully written ethnography surrounding a population that has been all but ignored in academia: Black girls. Cox creates fertile dialectical space by weaving together elegant storytelling with scholarly observation. Through the accounts of her experiences with these girls and women, Cox attempts to reframe society's perception of Black girls as "at-risk," "deficient," and "too much, too loud" into one of "wonderful excess" and adaptability. I highly recommend this book.

A brilliant ethnography about an understudied topic. Professor Cox demonstrates mastery of a wide range of theoretical perspectives to understand how black girls and young women navigate the complexities of belonging as subjects of a city and a country that often forgets about them, as well as to one another. I learned so much from this book.

Arrived promptly and was new.

5/7 perfect

Interesting perspective presented by the Author. Great ethnographic work.

Read this book for a class. It was interesting. Made me wonder about the further adventures of these women. Greeted a place of curiosity in me about issues of poor black women that I had not considered

Interesting ethnography definitely would recommend

This is by far the most useless textbook i have ever been forced to rent for school. Waste of time reading this scattered thought, ridiculous book.

Review

“Fascinating.”—Vanity Fair“[An] amusing, readable synthesis . . . Blank darts from one intriguing, thought-provoking point to another. . . . [And she] offers the provocative solution that soon we will move on from our present fixation on the binary to a more fluid understanding.”—Abigail Zuger, New York Times“Using wit and wisdom, Blank substantiates her argument that love and passion are not defined by biology.”—EDGE Publications“A lively, accessible synthesis of decades of scholarship on the history and sociology of sexuality.”—CHOICE “Wry, witty and thoroughly researched.”— Lavender Magazine“Blank has produced a challenging, clear, and interesting study of how Western views of what it means to be ‘straight’ have changed over the past two centuries and continue to change.”—Library Journal“Blank’s work reaches further and deeper into the history of heterosexuality…highly accessible.”—Lambda Lit“Straight …is accessible and engaging, often witty and penetrating in its insights.”—New York Journal of Books “Blank’s tenacious research and insightful arguments make clear how malleable the attitudes of the world we live in really are.”—Michelle Kehm, Bust“Blank writes with great erudition and humor, so that, even a skeptical (or anxious) reader will be hard-pressed not to find it enjoyable and thought provoking."—Haaretz“Hanne Blank has rendered a meticulously researched romp through the history of ‘heterosexuality’—that pesky orthodoxy still looming over Western culture like smog. Her sweeping synthesis takes on everything from Freud to Larry Craig, expertly weaving this untold history with insight and a refreshing dose of irreverence.”—Lisa M. Diamond, author of Sexual Fluidity: Understanding Women’s Love and Desire“The author uses wisdom and wit to substantiate her contention that love and passion are not definable by biology.”—Kirkus“From its thorough but brisk explorations of sexual orientation’s intersections with sex, gender, and romance, this illuminating study examines our presuppositions and makes a powerful, provocative argument that heterosexuality—mazy, unscientific, and new—may be merely “a particular configuration of sex and power in a particular historical moment.”—Publishers Weekly“With impeccable research and detail, Hanne Blank uncovers the fascinating, often hidden, history of heterosexuality. Straight is a marvelous cultural history that is as entertaining as it is profoundly enlightening and necessary for understanding the world in which we live.”—Michael Bronski, author of A Queer History of the United States “What would it mean to dispense with our current categories of sexual identity? Writing with grace and wit, Hanne Blank demonstrates that what sounds like a radical proposition is also historically inevitable. This is a book that really shakes up an assumption or two!”—Laura Kipnis, author of How To Become a Scandal and Against Love   “Challenging our culture’s deeply entrenched, stubborn assumption of heterosexuality, Straight helps us to think newly and critically. Starting from her own experience, Hanne Blank creatively analyses the unexamined idea that heterosexuality is given, unchanging, ahistorical.”—Jonathan Ned Katz, author of The Invention of Heterosexuality and co-director OutHistory.orgFrom the Hardcover edition.

I'm putting this book on my very short list of works, including "The Selfish Gene" The Selfish Gene: 30th Anniversary Edition--with a new Introduction by the Author, Davies' "Deptford" Trilogy The Deptford Trilogy, and "The Nurture Assumption" The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do, Revised and Updated, that have fundamentally changed the way I view the world. It really doesn't matter whether one agrees completely with Blank or not as to the historical reason the term and concept came into our culture; those are interesting opinions. The incontrovertible fact is that "heterosexual" has a specific meaning, a meaning that changes over time, and a meaning that impacts ones understanding of all other aspects of gender and sex identity. The life-changing aspect of this book is, in other words, not so much Blanks specific explanation of what heterosexuality is and means but rather the underlying concept that its meaning is not self-obvious and is important to understand. From this point of view Blank's ideas become data in a personal analysis of an entire area of thought that had never occurred to me before.Another reviewer likens "Heterosexual" to post-modern "everything is a social construct" fallacy. I think seeing it that way completely misses the point. Of course who I am sexually is a physical reality, founded in my genes, my gestation, and my life experience. Who I actually am is not a construct but a reality. But the name given to that reality IS a social construct. Who falls under this umbrella, and who does not? I often call myself bisexual, for want of a better term, but never felt it is particularly accurate. Reading this book has led me to coin a new term, "NH", or "Not Heterosexual", which has some of it's own baggage but is perhaps a little more accurate. How many books will ever cause someone to redefine his own sexual orientation? Here's the reason I recommend this book to everyone: if you and your brother are monozygotic twins, and share the same sexual orientation, the reality of your own sexuality is still different from his. Your husband's sexuality is substantially different from that of your college boyfriend, even if they both self identify as "straight". Considering these facts will, I think, give anyone reading it a deeper understanding of themselves. For anyone who, like myself, is not (to use the APA term) "gender-normative" [...], or who is close to someone like me, I consider it essential reading.

Good thought and excellent prose construction. A+A good read for everybody, goes beyond academic boundaries.

This is a wonderful history that diligently researches a word that many use but few really understand. A compelling story of how and why we, as Western society (there is little to no mention of other cultures), refer to and think in certain ways about the heterosexual/homosexual dichotomy. I found this to be delightfully informative and well researched. There is a bit of, perhaps willful, disregard to whether certain historical shifts are causation a or merely corollaries of some greater force, however, this does not distract from the essential premise of this work. I would heartily recommend this to anyone looking to learn more about the history of Western sexuality, marriage, and family.

this is a popular history but very well balanced. I recommend to any one who is interested in the dichotomous sex relationships in our current culture.

Blank's exploration of this cultural norm is as thorough as I was hoping for. It opened my mind and helped me have a more nuanced understanding of sexuality and human relationships. I can't give higher praise than that as the quality of my relationships is where I find the value and balance of my life.

Excellent analysis. Thorough, informative, and provocative. The author gets a few points wrong but is otherwise very persuasive.

AWESOME AWESOME BOOK.

Simply fabulous and poignant work... a must read! Hanne Blank is a vivid, authentic and powerful writer.
