About the Author
Rebecca Dart is a Vancouver-based artist who has been working in the animation industry for twenty years in multiple positions such as layout artist, background design, and character design. My Little Pony: The Movie is the first feature film she’s worked on. When not working, which rarely happens, she loves spending time with her husband and two tuxedo cats while and watching movies and reading books and comics. Meghan McCarthy served as a freelance writer on the first season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. She later took on the role of story editor and eventually became a co-executive producer. She is now vice president & head of storytelling at Hasbro Studios. She is most proud, however, of creating the two greatest children on the planet, a credit she shares with her husband, Craig. After many childhood years of scribbling in sketchbooks and staring at cartoons, in 1998 Jayson did the inevitable and became a professional animator. The supervising director at DHX Media Studios for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, he’s successfully directed five seasons of the hit TV series, three DVD spinoff movies, dozens of digital web shorts, and a full-length feature film.

This is a fantastic art book for fans of My Little Pony as well as anyone who loves fantasy worlds. My only tiny complaint is that even at 160 pages it still feels like this book could go quite a bit longer. There are tons of beautiful concept paintings, many of which are noted as not having made it into the film, and lots of character concept and reference works. In the section for the Mane Six, they even include RGB value color swatches for them. The art overall is extremely well done and functions as a massive expansion to what the world of MLP is.As for book quality, it's a solid hardcover with good weighty glossy paper that doesn't feel like it'll tear if you mishandle it.
The book is extremely well made with vibrant colors and sketches that make you pine for what could have been. Capturing what made the show a cultural phenomenon in both an artistic and writing standpoint. Though we are reading a book about magical, flying ponies and other mythical creatures, there is something very real underneath it all- and the simple truth that Friendship really is Magic and we are never truly alone, and more powerful than we think in spite of our abilities or disabilities.You can feel the love and passion that was poured into this. One thing I adore is the respect the creators have for their audience, devoid of age. Never at any point is anyone talked down to or things overly simplified, which we all appreciate as young children and adults. In a world so critical of every choice we make, there is a catharsis in seeing flawed, third dimensional characters teaching anything from beginner level morals to some that took me back at how mature they were- lessons we all too often forget as we age. The scrapped ideas and locations in this book are beyond breathtaking. As an animation and story buff myself I knew a lot of work goes into making something as large as a movie- though I was taken aback at just how much these creators brought to life to tell a lasting story. You can't help but feel inspired after reading the book. Nothing worthwhile ever comes easy, as can be seen by the years of conceptualizing and hard work put into this world.
Incredible art and information in this book. Very cool to see actually comparisons to early concepts. Also the Boom vs Flash character models.Some spoilers in this book because of the art of the locations and some info on the characters.
I know, I could be like all the rest of the Amazon kindle users out there, but this art book is REALLY something else. It makes me a bit more hyped for the movie, believe it or not. 😉
A great chance to see all of the characters, places, and events which didn't quite make it into the movie, as well as gain an understanding of why the movie was designed the way it was. A must have for all pony fans ^-^
I have seen many art books for movies in my day, but this book tops them all! The art direction for this film looks absolutely gorgeous and flawless. You can tell a lot about an animated film just by how the art and the details look and how much time and effort the artists and animators put into making this a beautifully designed movie. I really look forward to seeing the final product in October and I hope you all do too!
It has lots of concept art and written notes, I learned a lot of little things that went into making the movie I never knew. The art is quite nice with comparing concepts and finalized work. I really love hardback books, it is larger than I expected and has a lot of pages and everyone of them are beautiful. If you are a fan of My Little Pony and loved the movie, this book is highly recommended.
The MLP Movie Artbook visualizes the amount of details, explorations, and resources into one big production. The quality does feel solid on paper, the concepts look very potential, and the commentary do a great job showing about the characters and the locations. Recommended!
