#637,898 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

"Pillar of Salt" is a remarkable autobiographical novel about coming of age in the Jewish ghetto of Tunis during the 1930s and 1940s. Besides providing an enjoyable narrative, Memmi conveys a vivid picture of the impact of French colonialism on Tunisian society in general and on Tunisian Jews in particular. It is a study of multiple alienation, at once from traditional Jewish culture, Tunisian Muslim culture, and French culture. Memmi's work also sheds light on the little known story of the Holocaust in Axis-occupied Tunisia as well as the growth of zionism among North African Jews. This book is a must read for anyone interested in French colonialism, North Africa, and modern Jewish history. It is also simply a good read.

This (semi)autobiographical book was written in the mid fifties. It deserves to be plucked from obscurity and placed among the better novels of the 20th century. Artful prose tells the story of a boy growing up in colonial Tunis. He is at the crossroads of Jewish, French, African and Moslem/Arab culture. He is unable to assimilate all these influences into his life, so he rejects his background and is left with a void he cannot fill. Highly recommended.

This was interesting in that it gives a clear picture of Algeria in the first part of the 20th century. More multicultural than I had really understood.

read this book. read this book. read this book if you ever want to have a sense of what it meant to be a tunisian jew.

This is a great book about the life of an African Jew covering pre and postwar France. Compelling and thought provoking!

This is a well-written novel about the life of a Jewish Tunisian boy, growing up in the years leading up to WW2. It is generally considered to be autobiographical, and though the narrator’s name is not the author’s, it reads more like a memoir than a novel: it records Alexandre’s memories and thoughts about his life, but has few if any traditional scenes and very little dialogue or physical description; the detail is primarily emotional. And yet, the specific incidents that make up the narrator’s experiences feel drawn from life, rather than the types of occurrences an author is likely to invent. The first section of the novel is about Alexandre’s childhood, and it begins in almost idyllic fashion, though it gains complexity as he becomes aware of his family’s poverty and the divisions in his society. The second and longest section follows him through high school, torn between the traditional lifestyle of his family (who come to resent allowing him to study at all, since it means not bringing in money) and the European middle class. This part of the book reminded me of Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels in its examination of social class, through the lens of an impoverished student trying to succeed in an almost foreign world. The final section is about WW2 and the German occupation, and while this is by no means a thriller, it introduces some suspense and is a different sort of war story than I’d read before. At any rate, I enjoyed this book: it is well-written (or well-translated), and the narrator is complex and feels genuine. While there’s no single plot, the story kept my interest, and formed a great introduction to the complexities of a place I knew next to nothing about. The supporting characters receive less development, and there are more of them than we could get to know well – again, in memoir-like fashion – but in a story focused on the narrator’s search for identity, it works. I would recommend this one.

I was looking forward to reading this because I am going to Tunisia and I love literature, especially if it's challenging literature. But instead of being challenging, I found this narrative quite tedious and eventually annoying. It reads is almost like a Woody Allen parody of an existential memoir. Memmi is totally self-absorbed and alienated almost from birth. As a kid he is alienated from his parents, from other kids, from his culture--enough already. Remember the scene of the young Woody/Alvy going to a psychiatrist in "Annie Hall"? I swear it's young Memmi:Alvy's mother: He's been depressed. All of a sudden, he can't do anything.Doctor: Why are you depressed, Alvy?Alvy's mother: Tell Dr. Flicker. (To the doctor) It's something he read.Doctor: Something he read, huh?Alvy: The universe is expanding...Well, the universe is everything, and if it's expanding, some day it will break apart and that will be the end of everything.Alvy's mother: What is that your business? (To the doctor) He stopped doing his homework.Alvy: What's the point?

I gave this sequel a two stars bc it wasn't as grasping as the first. It felt like the storyline was being dragged and no real pull. Every conversation felt like it was on repeat and it ended so fast. I read it because I wanted to know what or who was the kidnapper. And honestly, I skipped a lot of it bc it was dragging.

First of all, this sequel really should have been announced somehow--like at the end of NIGHT SINS.Ellen North, the heroine, never really impressed me, yet I still wanted her to succeed.Jay Brooks is sexy. Running from his pain is somewhat overdone. Ms. Hoag's heroes tend to be cut from the same cloth--guilt ridden, raw-boned, smoky voiced. They're all sexy, though, because they are mostly the same.Megan O'Malley, the heroine in NIGHT SINS, receives nice closure. Mitch Holt, the hero in the same book, is still a nice guy.Paul Kirkwood still never gets his comeuppance--not really. Considering what an ass he is, he should have been run out of town.Hannah Kirkwood is a solid character, and I like the idea that she can start over and not only give her children a fresh start, but maybe find happiness with the sexy priest, Tom McCoy.I never felt more than sexual attraction between Ellen and Jay and had to take their word that they'd fallen in love with each other. However, these two books tell a very thorough and compelling story. GUILTY AS SIN is still open-ended, like NIGHT SINS, but it works out okay.Ms. Hoag is a talented writer. If you enjoy romantic/suspense tales I believe you will enjoy this book. It is certainly worth reading.Shelley Dawn, author of Sweet, Sweet Jessie and Dark Nights

This book is very well written and is a real thriller. The book unfolds and keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. It is very well put together and has many factors of suspense. The one thing that I didn't like(the mystery thriller is my favorite genre) is the sometimes prolonged sex scenes which I don't think add much to Tami Hoag's books. The suspense is done beautifully.

I know this book has gotten some bad reviews, but I honestly enjoyed it. I read Night Sins first and was completely engrossed in the story so I continued reading Guilty As Sin and just as with the first book, I didn't want it to end. I loved all the plot twists and the characters. It was a nice diversion for me to get lost in the pages of the story for awhile. Give both books a chance. Read them and form your own opinion. You may just be pleasantly surprised.

Guilty as Sin is the second in the Deer Lake series. You should read "Night Sins" first, then this one. As a mother I was afraid to turn the pages in Night Sins for fear of what I would learn, but once I got into it was captured and it became a page-turner. It has twists and turns and is a really good 'who dun-it' with a bit of romance included along with the suspense. Very creative plot. While I generally figure out the end, this one was a surprise! But of course you have to read both books to get the full story.

Once finished I was ready to read it again. What a great story...Another tense and suspenseful mystery that will keep you up until way past bedtime.

As written by several others here, 'Guilty as Sin' is the sequel and/or continuation of 'Night Sins'. Mitch and Megan are still around although with decidedly reduced roles. This book focuses on Ellen North and Jay Brooks. The two books together kind of remind me a bit of a 'Law and Order' episode, where one book is centered on police work and the second is centered on convicting the criminals. Ellen North is an assistant district attorney in Deer Lake, Minnesota and is simply one of the finest female (or male for that matter) characters I have ever seen in a novel. She is described in some reviews as the 'Ice Queen', but I don't see her that way. I see her as the Ice Queen wannabe. As for the dangerous love interest, Jay Brooks fits the bill well. Their attraction to each other is kind of funny at times as are most of these dangerous attractions in Tami Hoag's books, some bordering on laughable, but this one took more time to develop. Ellen North was tough and wanting to be in control of her emotions but she was constantly trying to reign in her anger or if she wasn't reigning in her anger, she was letting it fly uncontrolled. I loved her. I'm not sure about Jay. He took some getting use to as he was kind of obnoxious at the beginning as are many of Tami Hoag's hero types. Unlike 'Night Sins', I pegged the second bad guy in this book early and held firm in my suspicions right up to the end where I was proven right. The epilogue is kind of a chiller though...Is there another sequel in the works? hmmmmm... Anyway, this book was over 600 pages long and not dull at all. Probably the only thing I did not care for was Megan's replacement, Agent Wilhelm. Did Tami really have to make him so totally incompetent? If he rose to the rank of special agent, wouldn't he have at least some degree of intellignece when it came to investigation? Anyway, this is an exciting book that really deserves the title: Page Turner. Good characters, good plot, lots of chills and lots of twists. I would recommend this eagerly especially if you are a Tami Hoag fan, which I am. if you are not, well maybe you should be. Great book

I gave it a 4 as I think it dragged out to long , I love Tami Hoag she's up with the best of them a Masterful Writer but some times I wish I said I wish that it wouldn't drag out.

Passed my Server+ cert with a score of 842 using only this book (there was a lot of prayer involved too though, lol). I really like how the book is laid out and it's simplicity. Every piece of info in the book is important, very little fat. know your stuff!on the downside, it has some typos (though not too bad), and some of the port numbers are not correct in their lists, it also does not cover UPS calculations very well.all in all though, I would definitely use this book again. It covers over 90% of what was on the exam.

Crammed for three weeks, passed exam with higher than an 850. There were some items not covered by the book, but I either already knew the answer, or the book gave me the information I needed to make an intelligent guess. There was almost no question that I could not use what the book did cover to immediately eliminate 2 answers.

I purchased this book after reading the positive reviews. I was not disappointed! I liked the hands-on examples -- they really help to drill in the material. There isn't a lot of fluff or filler -- the information is to the point. It covered all of the objectives thoroughly . I took my test today and passed with an 861 on the first try. I felt well prepared, and didn't get the dreadful "I'm going to fail" feeling that I usually have during these CompTIA exams. I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying for the Server + exam!

So a few things with textbooks. I have never found such a good book since the A+ Passport for A+. I found the N and Sec+ books a complete disaster as there is really no completely reliable reference for those subjects. This book however is just right. It covered the correct depth to the subject of the Server+ but it is not to be relied on solely as a reference. Other books have been actually terrible compared to this one in not covering whole subjects you're not at all tested on. I could have knocked them a star over power supplies as this was missing in this book but you should completely grasp in preparation. There are just so many brands of junk books where they "throw" everything at the reader. With that said, you better have a really really good grasp of at least A+ and Sec+ or this exam could still eat you alive after reading this book. If you want to pass than this book's contents than you should know all of this content cold.

I solely used this book for this exam and barely passed with a 792. It does not cover every question on the exam. Sybex book version by Troy McMillan would probably be a better source to read for new folks who have not had a chance or opportunity to see a data center in detail or a server in detail for a rack mount or blade server. This McGraw Hill source is only good for Server hardware techs I believe that see this stuff daily. A lot of the paragraphs do not go into specific detail. The hands-on exercises are good for this book. Love the pre-setup instructions and line by line instructions. More pictures of real data center racks to show examples of each server role, and how many servers for that role, etc. would be good to see to get better physical understanding. Also on provided disk put files of IT documentation for each type of document used thru out its life cycle. This certification is good to get you working as a data center tech position dealing with the base level of this material, then moving on to study for your Server MCSA, VMware certs, then Cloud Administrator. Path to take would be as recommended Server+, MTA 98-365, Server 2012/2016 MSCA, Linux+, VMware VCA/VCP, then Cloud Administration.

I took the Server+ test after I passed the Trifecta (A+/Network+/Security+) and this was my only study resource. Given I had just done those previously about 2/3 of the material in this book was covered in those other three certifications and so there wasn't that much new material. The main stuff was on servers or network storage in much greater detail than the previous three certificates. This exam also is a bit dated now and because of that is quite easy to prep for. Out of the 2 tests for A+, Net+, Sec+, and this I felt this was the easiest CompTIA exam I have taken (I also scored the highest on this out of any one I have taken). This also has a benefit that the other three do not and that is they are not on a continuing education cycle so this certificate is lifetime certificate and never has to be renewed. Nice and easy resume booster if you already have a little IT experience. I passed the Trifecta and had less than 5 months at a help desk position before I passed this so if you are good at studying and retaining the material the hands on experience isn't as important to get this under your belt. As I previously stated this was the only study material I used for it. Comes with a CD that has like 200 practice questions on it. Not dead accurate to what is on the test but no study test is. If you know the material you will do fine on test using just this to study from.

Worked perfectly as a sole source of study for Server+ SK0-004; I passed by a mile. The book's layout is sensible. There's not much fluff, so you'll move from topic to topic at an almost jarring rate. Just what you need, nothing you don't. I think the practice questions in the book and on the disc are pretty representative of the style of questions you'll see on exam day and well worth taking time to review. It's a super cheap book too, so....probably just buy it, read it, and sit for the exam, eh?I'm already Net+/Sec+ certified, and much of Server+ could be considered review, so bear that in mind.

I passed this exam yesterday with a score of 850 only using this book and a few practice exams online. There were a couple of questions that weren’t covered in this book as others have mentioned, however, that’s how it is with most exams in my experience. I also have my A+, Net+, and Sec+, so that helped a lot. I’d recommend having at least the A+ with some Net+ and Sec+ training/studying before taking the Server+ to make it pretty easy. That, and/or real world experience. Overall, I’d definitely recommend this book- it’s to the point, and adequate.

Review

"So much of what we know about Central America is facts, figures, abstractions, political cant. No one can read this remarkable story without a total change of perception. We learn not only how Elvia organizes campesinos to recover rights that have been taken from them, but how our government interferes on the side of injustice--and what we can do about it."--Robert McAfee Brown"Here is a voice seldom heard, the voice of Latin America's majority, those who bear the burdens of society. If we are to understand Honduras, Central America, or, for that matter, Latin America, we must listen attentively to this voice. It has much to teach us. It commands the future."--E. Bradford Burns, Professor of History, UCLA"Elvia's story provides the reader with a perspective on Honduras--indeed, on all of Central America--that even the best reporting from the outside cannot offer."--Most Reverend John R. Quinn, Archbishop of San Francisco"In the clearest of language, this bravest of humans, this courageous woman, Elvia Alvarado, tells the story of her life and the life of the people of Honduras. Read it and understand the struggle against tyranny of the poor. Read it and act."--Alice Walker

Well worth reading by Marxists and Libertarians alike and evenconservatives if you want to know what the circumstances are in Central America. Note that the translator and "ghost "writer is a bureaucrat . Well written and true to life this is the model for the caravans and for Valenzuela /Cuban agitation against the bourgeois of Central America. The book points out the futility of aid to and though the government or the parallel NGOs

A strange title for a book that sums up one of the problems of USA's intervention in Central America. Central American governments often apply their U.S. military aid to curtail any progressive social change and to reinforce their repressive government. Elvia Alvarado, a courageous Honduran woman that many would dismiss as simply a rabble-rouser is actually solving what many consider the main problem of the former banana republic countries. The small wealthy class owns most of the land to the extent that there is a large landless peasant "campesino" class. An agrarian reform law was passed in Honduras to lawfully award small sections of large unproductive estates to the campesinos to overcome this injustice in land ownership. The average campesino is ignorant of this law or their country's legal system. The situation really seems hopeless, but Elvia and selected leaders received training sponsored by the Catholic Church. The course trains them to organize the campesinos to demand their rights. The Campesino struggle is similar to the civil rights marches in the American South. They might be legally correct through a slow acting legal system, but they often meet the spontaneous violence of the local authorities before they gain legal access..Other interesting points brought out by this book is the oppressive condition of women in campesino society. If a solid family structure is the building block of a healthy society then this is a failed society. Elvia's own story and others she alludes to demonstrates the disruption of family and the displacement of children brought about by beatings and live-in conditions offered women when no other alternative is available. I do not have any first hand knowledge of poverty to this degree, but I believe this is a good book (explanation) to try and understand why poverty still exists in some countries even though they have been the beneficiaries of large amounts of international aid. There was not too much of the text that dealt with "the Gringo" except to say that as the U.S. brought pressure to bear upon Nicaragua, repression by Honduran troops also ratcheted up. Other than that it is really an interesting account of a brave woman standing up for her rights. Well worth the read.

Good insight into the experience of the Honduran campesino (and more to the point, the campesina) in the 1970s and 80s. I imagine that while not 100% of it applies today (the political and military situations in the US, Russia, and Central America have changed since then), some of it remains very relevant. What Alvarado has to say about the effects of poverty, solutions to social issues, the challenges and benefits of organizing and empowering the women in the communities, and the culture are likely still as fresh as the day she said them. A bonus for me was that having read Ryszard Kapuscinski's account of the Soccer War (twice), I appreciated reading about the conflict from her completely different point of view.Benjamin did a great job of maintaining Alvarado's voice and the flow of the storytelling - note that Benjamin is credited as "translator" rather than "author," as her goal was to preserve and publish Alvarado's thoughts. While the subject matter is serious, Alvarado frequently shows her sense of humor, and it was a fairly quick read. I can't say I agree with all the theoreticals espoused by the subject, but Alvarado's narrative helped me understand why she felt that way, so I feel it was successful.

When I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras from 1987-89, I wish I had read this book. Had I done so, I might have changed the way I did some of my work.Don't Be Afraid, Gringo had just come out when I completed my training in May 1987. Had I been more persistent and read the book back then, I might have been a better volunteer and tried some different approaches other than the standard stuff. As a literacy promoter working on the North Coast and in the Aguan Valley, I worked with some of the same types of peasant cooperatives that are discussed in the book. I often didn't know intimately what these peasants were going through. Yes, I spent time in various cooperatives doing my literacy work. I'd chat with community leaders, maybe do some training or projects with the literacy teachers. But I never really got to the heart of the matter. This book took me there. It answered many of my lingering questions. The book not only takes you inside the campesino movement, but also takes you deep inside the feelings, customs, and everyday struggles of the poorest peasants in Honduras. Many saw the more outspoken peasants as troublemakers, when in fact, all they wanted was a good meal to eat.If you're thinking about traveling to Central America -- or you are planning to do work there -- this book is still very relevant and important. Though many changes have occurred in Honduras over the years, many things still remain the same.

Having lived in Honduras for almost two years, I have seen the poverty of which Elvia speaks. I also had an uncle who was an activist like Elvia. This book does a wonderful job at showing how difficult it is to rise above poverty in a third world nation and how unorganized and corrupt these governments are. The honesty of her words made it all too real.I highly recommend this book! Current political situtations have changed since the publication of this book, so I don't recommend using it for research papers, etc.

Because it's a testimonial and translation, this book is told in a very simple, straighforward way that a lot of people could probably read and understand easily. It's an eye-opening and inspiring read which I would definitely recommend.
