About the Author

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors’ prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and “slave” factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years’ formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work. Jeremy Tambling is Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong.

This could be the height or the depth of Dickens' art. It is up to you.David Copperfield is such an empty vessel, such s pliable lump of clay. How could anyone take interest in him?He does not mark the world but seems to take on the shape impressed on him by those around him. He does not affect the world but is affected by it. If you stop there,, he is the most boring character in the world. But if you watch closely, you will see that he gathers shape from the honest and good hearted around him and seems unaffected by the cruel and heartless people around him. As he grows, he becomes more worthy and more a magnet to the honest and. good hearted. As he becomes more worthy, his story becomes more profound and insightful, if you can see it. Is Dickens a moldy 18th century relic or a mirror to wholeness and richness in your life? It is more up to you than to Dickens.

One of the best books ever written. You will never forget David C! I don't know how I missed it growing up but a book reviewer in the WSJ alluded to it and said that the main character in his book was much like David: you are sad at the end that you will never get more of him. I broke with my "best seller" policy, and love of spy novels and action books, and ordered it. I can't wait for bedtime to get another hour of reading in of this 1000 page paperback I got fro m Amazon. yes, the start is a little slow until one becomes accustomed to the language and phrasing of the time, but by page 50 the book owns you. Dickens really rocks~!

An important literary work that's also a joy to read. There are a few Kindle versions, including a free one and this $1.99 one.I have both, and the only difference is the $1.99 version includes the 38 images by Hablot Browne from the original serial installments (19 monthly installments of 3 chapters each, released during 1849-1850, with 2 images per installment) and the first edition of the book (1850). Browne did the illustrations for 10 of Dickens' novels. The images in the Kindle version are low-resolution scans of the original images (or perhaps scans of other scans). On the Kindle Paperwhite, I don't think the images look very good, and some detail is hard to make out on some of the images. On the 10" iPad running the Kindle app, the images are much easier to see, both in their original size and when blown up to take up almost the full screen. However, the low-resolution images don't look very crisp on the high-resolution iPad display.I'll attach pictures of the same image on the Paperwhite and the 10" iPad (running the Kindle app) in hopes they'll help give you a better idea what you're getting for $1.99 on either device.Note that you can see all the images online for free. (I'll put a link in the first comment.) However, the site I link to doesn't tell you where each image belongs in the book, which chapter it goes with. I guess that's the biggest reason I can think of to pay the $2 - the Kindle book has each image embedded in the place where it appears in the print version of the book. The images are of historic significance, each one adds to the story (the artist was working with Dickens), and I enjoy them a lot.Just set your expectations low if you're getting it for your Paperwhite.

My Grandfather introduced me to Dickens on my tenth birthday, giving me Oliver Twist and stating, (as I was a voracious reader even then) "If you haven't read Dickens, you haven't read." Well... I cannot comment on that but I had read most of Dicken's before I was twelve and in my second (or third) reading of some of his books I have just finished re-reading David Copperfield. A very large book...coming in at eight hundred odd pages in my edition (which also has the most delightful pen and ink illustrations) be ready for a long but satisfying journey into the life and times of Dickens.Dickens stated David Copperfield was his 'favourite child' .... he was well pleased with the result and many claim it was largely autobiographical.Yes.... I love it...although very wordy and descriptive... but not my favourite. I much prefer Great Expectations or Tale of Two Cities. However once again the reader is treated to a bevy of unforgettable characters. Apart from David Copperfield, there is his austere but warm and giving Aunt, Betsy Trotwood.... the charming and loquacious Micawber and his doting wife, the dreadful Murdstone siblings, the vile and undulating Uriah Heep and the simple but loveable character of Mr Dick. Dickens somehow manages to name his characters in such a way the name befits the character.... like the loving Peggotty... David's childhood nurse. Long before a descriptive word was read I could picture this warm and loving woman.Sadly Charles Dickens died early in life at the age of fifty eight. Nonetheless he was incredibly prolific, and in an era where the production of a novel must have been quite a task, this in itself is remarkable. I salute Charles Dickens.... who wrote many masterpieces and is still being read almost two hundred years later and perhaps for many years to come.

In my last quarter century, I am reading a "booket list" of classics that I had missed in the past. Up to reading "Copperfield," my favorite was "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Dumas. Now I have a new favorite. In my mind, this is the perfect novel. The characters are so different and so effortlessly revealed. I felt like I really knew these people. It was interesting to me how he allows you to encounter his characters as they reappear surprisingly later in the story. It is so well woven together and such a pleasure reading! And it includes a great love story.

This book is quite juvenile. While reading the description, it says for ages 2-6, but I would say at most to age 4. It is adorable, but definitely intended for very young children, and not school aged children. It has fund pictures and rhymes, but the age appropriation was my only issue.

I think this is a great book for children from birth to age 6 or 7. The illustrations are wild and wacky collages, showing insects with anatomical accuracy but also cartoonish personality.Eight insects are each described in rhyming phrases. At the end there is a page showing all the bugs in their actual size, and then there is a chart that lists the bugs and compares their characteristics (where does it live, how many legs, etc.) These pages add a "multi-media" aspect that keeps kids interested. The thing I like most about this book is that although the text is sweet and melodic, it has scientific content. Each phrase describes a real aspect of the insect (A long line of ants that work so much, Roly-poly bugs that curl up when I touch). The book also introduces pictoral and graph comparisons and the idea of taxonomy in a fun way, preparing kids for further studies in science.

This book is colorful and fun to read. I bought it for my daughters who were not quite 2 at the time and we read this book until it fell apart. Definitely a favorite for a long time.

The art work through out the book will keep a child's attention from beginning to end - it is so vibrant and reflects bugs in a whimsical but accurate portrayl. This book is also accurate as to the information that it shares with the reader about the different types of bugs. This is the perfect book for young adventurerers who want to go out and find their own bugs without any fear. Shared this with my 2 and 5 year old granddaughter's and they always ask to read it again when they come over. Just wait until spring and we can go out and find our own bugs!

My granddaughter favorite book. Cute and a fast read.

Love this book! I read this to my preschoolers. They love all of the bugs. We also read it and then get up and move like each bug. This book is requested often in my classroom.

Passed the kids test.

Two-year-old loves it!!

The book came in perfect condition. Giancoli is the premium standard for high school and college physics books. They are well written and contain a variety of problem that make you think about the material in a different way. It is a great suppliment for classroom learning. As an Petroleum Engineering major, this book should have 5 stars. But the main issue I have is the price of the book, which is why I only gave it 4 stars. I do not believe college students should have to pay that astronomical price. The price of this book can equal the price of the class, and that is not good.

I took Physics 1 and Physics 2 at different schools, so I used two different textbooks. I have got to say that I found this book to be somewhat vain. The chapters have short explanations of the material followed by lots of examples, the book almost dives into the examples right away. At the end of each chapter there will usually be a section for things like "physics in real life." These sections are almost useless and irrelevant to the course. The professor almost always skipped them. With all the examples and the physics applied sections I feel as though the author tries to impress the world with everything that he knows about the subject. The book briefly explains the fundamentals and goes right into the examples, leaving the reader with the need to fill in gaps and make assumptions about the material. The other book that I used was Fundamentals of Physics by Resnick and Walker. I found that book to be much more sound and focused on teaching the fundamentals first. It was a lot easier for me to learn from this book.I just want to say that I'm not just a college kid complaining about something that didn't go my way. I made good grades in both physics classes. I am just giving my opinion of the two books. In the end, we don't get to choose what books we use for our classes, but I just thought that I would share this.

I hate this book on a visceral level. It's about a paragraph of an explanation and then overly complicated examples. It very poorly teaches the already difficult subject.

This book provides an excellent supplement to my physics 1 class. I find that reading the chapters really clarifies the concepts discussed/taught in my lecture and recitation, as the professors can get...distracted (physicists, am I right?) and ramble off topic. I also bought this because they recommended the 4th edition, but that was about a thousand dollars and there's really no difference between the two. Even most of the questions are the same. I'd recommend this for physics 1 students who want to save a few bucks.

I bought this because the text for my class is a worthless convoluted piece of crap that assumes you already have two semesters and A's in the classes it is for... and now it is going to show you fancy notation and pictures. This book from Giancoli, however, is amazing. I learn from this book in order to do the problems from my required text.If you are a physics professor, do not use Tipler, use Giancoli. Tipler assumes you already know physics, or want to spend hours a day in self discovery, sorry I am not Isaac Newton.

A very well written book, this book is good for all learners. Every point is explained very clearly, and yes, there is an example for every case!!!!!!

I enjoy this book. It seems to be alot more difficult than my tests so I figure if I can read and study the book and understand it then I'm definitely all set.

This text is one of the best books I have used. The wide array of subjects covered, and the relevance of the material to certain groups, as indicated in the title, is spot-on. There are countless fields to which the concepts contained herein could be applied. Whether you need the knowledge for functional purposes, or like me, just want to expand your knowledge base, this text is outstanding. Clear, concise concepts, and brilliant literature to express the points.
