When this book came out, I read it and loved it, and then went to the author event for it at McNally Jackson Bookstore in NY. The 2 authors read and discussed and then the audience got involved too. I was very much on the side of Jim Fingal, the copy editor, as were many audience members. Near the end, D’Agata was talking about how capturing the culture of Las Vegas was more important to him than whether the fall from the tower was exactly 9 seconds. I raised my hand and said, “If we can’t trust you on the 9 seconds, how can we trust you on the culture of Las Vegas?” He got flustered and was at a loss for words. I felt bad and made a light comment so he could go on. I talked nicely to him afterwards and also to Fingal, and at greater length to the editor, who was also there. I’m going to see the Broadway version next month and plan to wait at the stage door to get autographs from all 3 actors. Hopefully I can find the copy of the book with the authors’ autographs.

The four stars are because there is a lot here for a reader consider. The material is engaging and intelligent. There are words that may keep this from being read by many people and the suicide of a teen age is not likely to be a topic for family night reading.I first heard of John D’Agato and Jim Fingal’s book The Life Span of a Fact was in a review of the New York stage, I understood this to be about the problem of wiring a story in the age of “False News” and the apparent righteousness of body slamming a reporter. The media has a long history of self-critism and this looked to be a chance to read some intelligent arguments about the way the media have been politicized (actually it has been for many decades going back to when newspaper publishers routinely ran for and won office), and what has morphed into weaponized divisive argument that defies what America should be about.The Life Span is about none of that. In fact it is a debate who time has either gone or cannot be vital until more immediate public concerns have been brought down from the precipice of bombing, (here in the US, mass shooting (In France) and the deliberate state sponsored murder of a reporter (Jamal Khashoggi). In Life Span the case is made that by calling your product an essay, the author has infinite freedom to rewrite prosaic history in the name of whatever esoteric poetical emotional truth that fits the writer. At the time my used edition was published in 2012 this may have been an important topic. In 2018 it adds poison to a well where the water already been made bitter.The book itself is a dramatization of an actual series of exchanges between an essayist and a fact checker. The essay in question is about the Las Vegas suicide by jumping by a teenager, Levi Presley. We are not told if the editor intends to publish the essay as a literal recitation of the facts or as a dramatization of the facts.John D’Agato is a well-established essayist. He has definite beliefs about the term. In this book he will argue passionately that the writer must serve art in preference to fact if by doing so the essayist helps the reader to experience a deeper and more aesthetically meaningful appreciation of the events under discussion. In fact the essay is a poorly defined medium of expression and it is legitimately plastic in the matter of content. A case can be made that it occupies literary space between fiction and non-fiction.D’Agato goes further; insisting that the term Non-fiction is new and that facts are rarely absolute. He tosses out several famously named essayists arguing that the history of the essay is the history of exactly his understanding of the rights and duties of the essayist. Earlier he established that in taking this assignment he made it clear to the editor that he is not a reporter and that he will not be bound by the rules of journalism.Perhaps on the strength of this warning, Jim Fingal is tasked with fact checking the proposed article and in writing is ordered to “comb through this marking anything and everything…” In taking the assignment, Jim is at once literal and increasingly meticulous and unforgiving. His questions everything from the number of seconds given for the boy’s fall to the color of bricks and the exact routes between locations.The author comes off as an arrogant, defender of his every invention and demonstrably wrong statement. The Fact Checker become so focused on his mission he will even challenge the facts as given in the report from the Coroner’s office.Ultimately I had little patience with either person.D’Agata will on two occasions make appeals to authority. In logic this argument can count as a fallacy or not. The way D’Agata applies the technique it is fallacious. He states the rules were set out by the ancient Roman orator, Cicero, among other and does not state those laws.Worse the writer states that If his reader feels betrayed when they realize how often an ostensibly nonfiction article is in fact fictional, he turns on the readership, complaining that they are too poorly educated to understand the writer’s rights. D’Agata could have made a reference to the failure of the 1913 audience to appreciate Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. There the portion of the audience that was known to reject anything new were when presented with ultra-modern music and lacking appreciation for the non-traditional choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky; they rioted.Instead the 2018 reader has the peculiar juxtaposing of a writer arguing for “Fake News” if the fakery is in service of art, and a time where the press is under increasing demands to clear not only the kinds of niggling fact checking of Fingal, but the creation of elaborate, fictional conspiracies to replace the prosaic, researched and fact checked.The Lifespan of a Fact is good writing. It is not apropos to the moment and does not serve D’Agata. It is a good book, but a prospective reader needs to know that this is not about journalism. It is a high-level discussion of a very particular type of writing, the essay.

From the color of the bricks on the Vegas Strip to the number of suicide victims discussed, this book makes you consider the necessity of writers always telling the truth and the fine line they have to walk between outright lying to the public and enticing the public to read their work. Would you care if a news reporter told you that the color of the president's tie was red when in reality it was blue, just because it sounded better within the paragraph? How about if 40 people were killed in a shootout instead of the 100 that a newsman reported? Which truth is more relevant? why? and is a reporter still a liar if he omits certain details? these are the questions addressed. A must have for understanding the balance between effective storytelling and accurate reportage.

A surprisingly engaging book that bares uncomfortable truths about journalism and what can be stated as fact. The exchanges between Fingal the Fact Checker and D'Agata the Tale Spinner are always entertaining and sometimes hilarious. D'Agata deserves a lot of credit for letting this book come to light because throughout it he seems to have little regard for facts, changing them at will. "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story," they used to say in journalism school. D'Agata follows this creed but is caught with his pants down.

I thought it would be about fake news, in the current political context, but not at all. It's a fascinating story comparing two peoples' versions of the truth. Is it more accurate to have every fact correct in an essay, or to present the correct thoughts and feelings via some creative license?

If you are a programmer and looking for a good guide and/or reference, do not buy this book! The examples are few and not very good. The book does not go beyond VB in explainations, or lead you to additional reference material. Don't waste your money.

This poor book always is getting slammed by someone somewhere. Why, I don't know. It is not the greatest book in the world on Visual Basic programming nor does it try to be. I don't think it would be my first choice as a beginning book if you have never programmed in any language before; however, if you have been programming with other languages this is a great intro to VB.There are times when it starts to get a bit dry and sometimes it does leave one going "and the point is?", but in general I find this to be a well designed and well spoken text on the language. One can find it bundled with VB and "VB Step by Step" from Microsoft and after reading both books goodness knows how many times, I think the Programmer's Guide in many ways is superior to "Step by Step".A must read for anyone who considers themselves a VB programmer, this is not the best intro for a novice, but is a great primer for an experienced programmer or one who has some experience with Visual Basic and is ready to go beyond the basics laid out in an intro book.

Jeffrey Marx is a Pulitzer Prize winning author (for investigative reporting, not for this book), who takes on the question of what it means to be a man in our society. He does this by following former Baltimore Colt defensive tackle Joe Ehrmann for a year while Ehrmann helped coach a Maryland high school football team. This team has two goals each season – to win the league championship and to beat their rival high school. But their methods, well, that’s the point of the book. The book focuses on the coaches’ goal of Building Men for Others and on the mantra that everyone on the team memorizes: What is the coach’s job? To love the players. What is the player’s job? To love each other. This is not football as most fans see it, but what does it do to the kids on the team?As Marx tells the story, it builds character, it builds strong and positive relationships, it heals pain, and it Builds Men for Others. In a time when gender roles are changing radically, Marx presents an image of masculinity that is neither traditional (one might think of “a man’s man”) nor revisionist. Instead, it present an image of both strength and vulnerability, an image of individual character and of team character. Although Marx began this quest as a detached investigator and as an author, he closes the book by describing neither what happened to Ehrmann nor what happened to the players on the team; he closes the book by describing how the experience affected himself.The book is very well written and it is easy to read (as one might expect from a Pulitzer Prize winning author). It takes about 2-3 hours to read. It is a good book for anybody interested in exploring what it means to be a man in our society, for example, a sports coach or a new father of a young son.

This is an outstanding book, so outstanding that my daughter and I are going to have a book discussion group with my two teen grandsons with the book as the focus. My younger teen grandson is passionate about football, plays on his high school team. In fact it was the Senior Coach at his high school that recommended this book. But the book is more than about football, it is about building character in young men. This is why both boys need to absorb the lessons that this book teaches.The author is a Pulitzer Prize winner; that exemplifies the books quality. It is very easy to read, with great stories told from life. The lessons taught though are like a secular Sunday school without being preachy. It's all about learning what true manhood is, building real character and integrity. As a big plus, the author shines a light on the false values of professional football and society in general. Really excellent, highest recommendation.

This is a very thought provoking project that Joe E. has undertaken, and one that could significantly change the world if more people were to see how important it is. What he is undertaking is Bible based apparently, but to my understanding it is more a translation of the very heart of the Bhagavad Gita and the Six Workhorse Principles which are the core of the Gita, which is all about change, Being and becoming, change in the direction of our Reality, our Self or spirit, i.e. becoming more like what we truly are: Spirit, Satchitananda (Being /Consciousness/ Bliss), Self, with a capital S, and away from self , small "s", the ego self, the unreal ghost with which we mistakenly identify. That is what this book is really about: change. Change initiated by Paster Joe E. in the hopes that these football players, the recipients of the coaching, will be changed and make a better world. It is a wonderful project, and book about this project.

Relationships and love are downplayed. Men are taught to be stoic, to hide or suppress their emotions.Mr. Ehrmann teaches his players that the won loss record is not what matters most. What matters most is learning to be a man. Developing 360 integrity - that is integrity all round at all times.Even for those boys who have a good father role model, there are often emotional issues that need addressing. Most men teach their sons to be strong - they were taught not to be emotionally sensitive and that is the way they raise their sons. Too often the father is hiding behind a facade and is afraid to open up emotionally to their sons. As a result, many sons never really know their father.This book is short and easy to read. It is well written and filled with lots of emotional moments. You will come away with a different perspective on what it means to be a man. You will also have a better understanding of why the normal focus of raising boys has been wrong. You will see the connection between the way boys are raised and how they turn out.There is a large segment of our male youth who do not have good father role models. Benjamin Hill received his PhD from the University of Iowa in 2003 and has taught at the University of Western Ontario since 2005. Perfect reading material for a visit to Hilbert's Hotel (which has unlimited rooms and hence unlimited spaces in which to read), Eugenia Cheng's new book is an absolute delight. Cheng explores the bizarre implications of the infinite, and shows how not all infinities are the same. Her sense of humor is extraordinary and the examples highly imaginative, making the book a pleasure to read. For example, she compares the power of mathematicians to that of a spoiled child who must face the consequences of asking for (and promptly being eaten by) a pet lion; be careful what you wish for is the valuable lesson. Cheng makes mathematics seem so fun, I can imagine the book inspiring many young readers to pursue careers in the field. All in all, a book as entertaining as the works of Lewis Carroll.-Paul Halpern, author of The Quantum Labyrinth: How Richard Feynman and John Wheeler Revolutionized Time and Reality

I seem to be badly out of step with the current trend in popular science books. The chatty style in this one, including anecdotes from the author's personal life, did not grab me at all. I had the same feeling about a book on the fine structure constant, and my review on that has been poorly received. I have the same feeling about the two books: no worries at all about the expertise of the authors or the science contained in the books. Personally, though, I'd rather put the chat to one side and concentrate on the science. The other reviews of this book (and that) suggest that they are doing a good job in communicating science to the lay reader and I thoroughly approve of such an achievement. So, well done for that, and I'll face up to being out of step.

This book gets pretty abstract at times, and the examples that the author provides are not very good at providing clarity. (Maybe there is no way to make this topic clear though to non-mathematics folks). Having majored in mathematics in college, the book made sense to me and I understood most if not all. The Hilbert Hotel example which I have read about before was well described. However, the chapter on dimensions in mathematics was not very useful or interesting. Einstein has pretty much proven that the fourth dimension is time with his theory of relativity and the examples in this chapter were kind of lame. I would suggest that only those folks who have studied math and are interested in math should read this book.

If you have an interest in mathematics and don't mind stretching your mind in unusual ways this is a great book

I got about 40 pages in and found it kind of boring. I am an engineer by profession, so it wasn't a distaste for math that made me feel that way -- I just felt she was taking too long to build up to the points she was trying to make.

Eugenia Cheng’s book on infinity is a delightful, deceptively sophisticated introduction to math’s most mind-bending topic. It covers ground that math lovers will find familiar (e.g., Zeno’s paradoxes, Cantor’s theory of transfinite numbers, diverging and converging series, Hilbert’s Hotel, Dedekind and Cantor’s constructions of real numbers). But its artful explanations are highly original—Cheng has a rare knack for translating challenging mathematical abstractions into easily-grasped terms through the use of concrete metaphors and down-to-earth analogies. In one of my favorite examples, she deftly elucidates the strange nature of infinite ordinal numbers by describing the key ideas involved in terms of the amount of hassle involved in accommodating extra guests at an infinitely large hotel. (The Hilbert.) I was also charmed by her explanations of exponential growth in terms of puff pastry (and I learned some interesting baking lore along the way), by her referring to the iPod Shuffle to explain factorial growth, and by her explanation of how to make an infinitely long line of cookies with a (weirdly) finite amount of dough. Superb analogies like these are invaluable for helping non-experts get their minds around math concepts, and dreaming them up requires a special talent for isolating the essence of abstract ideas and figuring out how to put them in familiar terms. (Which I know from personal experience is a lot harder than it looks.) Few writers on math I’ve run across are as good at this as Cheng. I found her book almost shockingly readable, and she engagingly conveys her sense of delight about the mathematical enterprise throughout—it’s baked with joy.

When I read in the introduction that the author works in the area of category theory, I got all excited thinking that the tale would eventually lead there. Nope, that is the last we hear about category theory. the rest of the book does not even cover what I heard about infinity during my first year of college. A few of Cheng's metaphors are indeed useful for illustrating some aspects of the subject, but I was hoping to find out something new about infinity, and there I was left feeling short-changed.
