A great resource but a bit long for an introduction to orthodoxy compared to other great books available. I preferred Kallistos Ware's The Orthodox Way, but found it helpful to read them side-by-side.Had a little trouble with the clarity of prose, I assume this is related to it being written decades ago and translated from Russian?

This is a wonderful book for Orthodox Christians to read to understand their church, it's dogmas and teachings. It is extremely informative, but it is also inspiring. It is very complete.

I had worked with XSLT for some time when I purchased this book. I needed something to help me move to the next level. This book provided a lot of help to improve XSLT scripts I wrote. The book is relatively large compared to other cookbooks I've used (over 700 pages) which means it is full of good recipes.I expected this book to be a cookbook and, as such, have solutions to common problems. It definitely offers that. It has a good structure that includes recipes for discrete problems such as string and date/time manipulation. It also has recipes for advanced composite scenarios such as XML to SVG, code generation, and extending XSLT.One of my favorite aspects of this book is that it provides some foundational, introductory information as well. It's not *just* a cookbook. There is a chapter dedicated to XPath as well as chapters on Testing, Debugging, and Functional Programming. This is excellent for those who both want to advance their skills from beginner or from intermediate.I think XSLT is an often overlooked yet powerful tool and I rely on this book to help me with XSLT generation. It has been useful in many scenarios such as customizing SharePoint data views, converting XML data to XHTML for display, modifying 3rd-party-generated XML for saving and restoring in custom situations, and for streamlining data storage. And this book has helped me with all of that.

This book is for the experienced XSLT developer. It will provide many, many code samples right from the beginning. I purchased this book thinking I can learn XSLT but, this book is not for the beginner. With that, I am not saying you should not purchase it. What I am saying is that I found a very good companion book: XSLT FOR DUMMIES. Believe it or not, this was my first for dummies book. Don't let the title fool you, this is a great first book to understand XSLT. I think the cookbook will start you where the dummies book ends but with a very different approach: To give you ideas. From the dummies book, you will understand what XPath and other key topics which you will already need to understand for the cookbook. For example, the cookbook goes right to covering XPATH in chapter one but assumes you know what and how it works. I hope this review will help everyone understand what this book will do for you and the correct approach in using it.

Sometimes, XSLT is just a bit opaque :-) ... and this book is one way to get your mind around solutions to common problems. I don't use cookbooks a lot, but I find they can help when you really feel like you are missing something. Since these books are not expensive, I find having them on my tablet (I buy only kindle these days) can be very useful when ideas aren't coming quickly.

I've just completed a job where one of my primary functions was editing, teaching, and solving problems with XSLT. I started that job as an experienced programmer with little experience in XSLT. I frequently referred to this book whenever I thought, "I bet XSLT can do this, but how?" For example, if you are already familiar with common scripting languages and programming libraries, one of the first things you will notice about XSLT is a lack of regular expression functionality. I referred to the "search and replace" function in this book several times. This book is a real problem solver.

It took all of four days to find valuable answers and code to complete some of my tasks. Sal is very easy to read. They only thing I would request to improve this book is a play-by-play on the mechanics of how some of the code works.This volume sits right next to Michhael Kay's XSLT 2.0 and XPath 2.0. Sal helps me find the answers while Michael helps me understand how they work.

Excellent reference book for what I need to do. I learn XSLT in a hard way by myself with no aware of existence of this great book. I found code sniped on internet, this book is time saver with lots of great examples with practical use. The review before this review was dated 2008, I guess XSLT is not hot any more, eh? At least this is not popular technology.

Having twenty years of experience in programming, but being a novice with XSL, I needed help on a project. I purchased this book for its title, hoping to gleam examples that may assist with what I needed. I was not disappointed! This book is filled with example XSL transformation code! But, buyer beware! This book is for developers with knowledge of XSLT. If you need to learn the language, then purchase the XSLT for Dummies book, it is quite competent in it's content. (I did.) But for what the title indicates it is, then it is a fantastic purchase! I highly recommend this book, as it saved me through the project I was assigned.

This book is really helpful because it shows how to do things in xslt when you wonder if it's doable. But it has also the merit of showing what are the limit of the xslt 1.0 language which is fairly standard in every browser. So this book saved me a lot of programming, debugging and research.

Hildegard's insights written in the 1100s are just as relevant today. I highly recommend this book to those who desire to know God and His relationship with humans more deeply. Jesus Christ said "Eternal life is to know God (His Father) and Jesus Christ whom He sent."in the Gospel of John 17.3. Life is richer when one realizes this, and full of hope!

Hildegard was an incredible woman and I loved reading this book!

A thoughtful introduction to an outstanding woman

Hildegard of Bingen was a 12th century Benedictine mystic, visionary, writer, composer and a lot more. She wrote beautifully about the visions God gave her. Her writing is in the same ballpark as that of Julian of Norwich, Richard Rolle and the author of The Cloud of Unknowing. I realise Mediaeval mystics may not be to everyone's taste but St Hildegard is worth reading if only for the beauty of her writing.

This book contains excerpts of Hildegard of Bingen's various writings including her letters to important people of her time. It gave me a picture of her mystical, musical life which included running a monastery and her visions which prompted her to write about natural medicine and herbs. I enjoyed the fact that the book was a sampler of all these arts which made me want to read her writings and listen to her music.

Gorgeous writings by an amazing woman. If you're interested in the lives of saints, mysticism, or women in medieval Europe, this book is excellent.

Very Good for research papers.

I knew nothing of St. Hildegard and felt that an over all view would serve as a catalyst for further reading. This book is a wonderful introduction to both her mysticism and her incredible dedication to her calling. She is truly a "sainte" for all ages!

About the Author

Lydia Chen, a leading authority on traditional Chinese decorative knotting, was born in Loching, Chekiang, in 1940. Her interest in knotting began when her father-in-law, a deputy curator at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan, arranged for her to learn simple knots from an elderly museum custodian. From this modest beginning, she went on to figure out how knots were formed from the antique pieces she collected, and even invented some designs of her own. She has taught knotting at colleges, held several exhibitions of her work both at home and abroad, and authored a number of books on the art.

Great book on specialty knotting, was purchased as a gift to someone who was looking for this particular series from Lydia Chen. Chen has two other books in this series that cover nearly anything you need to know about this style of craft. Fun With Chinese Knotting & Chinese Knotting: Creative Designs that are easy and fun.

I liked it, but would prefer to have it in color.

Beautiful photos and drawings of Chinese knots. The only problem with this book is that it does not show you how to tie them. If you studied the photos long enough you might be able to figure them out. I still don't know how to tie a Chinese button knot. If you are an expert at knotting you might find this book useful. If you are looking for directions on how to tie Chinese knots, this is not the book for you. I am also sure that there are more then the 14 Chinese knots that are covered in this book.

It's a great book !!Takes you from a simple knot to a complex one. Easy to understand and allows you to become a pro!!

This book has gorgeous examples of very detailed knotting work, mostly Chinese but a couple Japanese and Korean works. For the simpler knots it has diagrams of the layering and formation of the cord which might be a bit difficult to beginners. If so I suggest getting Lydia Chen's other knotting book, Chinese Knotting: Creative Designs that are Easy and Fun! which has much more detailed and superbeginner-friendly guides to each of the smaller knots. That book also has an introduction to set-up methods (pins on a surface to hold the cord, knots in place).However, I do think that if you perhaps have an eye for detail and carefully look at the layering of cords in the diagrams you could figure these out. Keep in mind though, that the later more super-detailed (very gorgeous) designs in the book only have text descriptions of how they can be made."The Complete Book of Knotting" does have a more full spectrum of knots.. I feel that it encourages and gives advice for the reader to make their own designs after mastering/getting used to the large vocabulary of the other knots. It also gives a more historical introduction to knots in Chinese history.All in all I really recommend anyone seriously going to take on this craft to purchase both books. For super beginners, definitely start with the Chinese Knotting: Creative Designs that are Easy and Fun! book. For craft-minded people who only want one book , perhaps you can just get this book.

This is not the COMPLETE book of Chinese knotting. In fact it is a translation of Lydia Chen's book on Chinese Knotting book 3! It makes it very clear in the text that you need to have read books 1 and 2 ("Chinese Knotting", and "Fun with Chinese Knotting") to make any use of this book. It is gorgeously illustrated and inspiring for those competent at knotting techniques. But it is not an instruction manual on how to take up the craft of Chinese knotting. This is no doubt a valuable text for those expert at the technique but it is in no sense a COMPLETE guide to the craft. Beginners beware - working from this will just be a frustrating and dispiriting experience. Perhaps a better title would have been The Advanced book of Chinese Knotting:Techniques and Variations to Inspire!

This book is gorgeous - and not at all helpful. The instructions for most knots are poor at best, and left me with great frustration and a headache.

I disagree with the previous review in one aspect at least. There are actually very detailed diagrams of how to tie the knots. Having used a couple of Lydia Chen's other knotting books, I am used to the way the diagrams work, but they can be hard to follow for some people.

When this book came out, I read it and loved it, and then went to the author event for it at McNally Jackson Bookstore in NY. The 2 authors read and discussed and then the audience got involved too. I was very much on the side of Jim Fingal, the copy editor, as were many audience members. Near the end, D’Agata was talking about how capturing the culture of Las Vegas was more important to him than whether the fall from the tower was exactly 9 seconds. I raised my hand and said, “If we can’t trust you on the 9 seconds, how can we trust you on the culture of Las Vegas?” He got flustered and was at a loss for words. I felt bad and made a light comment so he could go on. I talked nicely to him afterwards and also to Fingal, and at greater length to the editor, who was also there. I’m going to see the Broadway version next month and plan to wait at the stage door to get autographs from all 3 actors. Hopefully I can find the copy of the book with the authors’ autographs.

The four stars are because there is a lot here for a reader consider. The material is engaging and intelligent. There are words that may keep this from being read by many people and the suicide of a teen age is not likely to be a topic for family night reading.I first heard of John D’Agato and Jim Fingal’s book The Life Span of a Fact was in a review of the New York stage, I understood this to be about the problem of wiring a story in the age of “False News” and the apparent righteousness of body slamming a reporter. The media has a long history of self-critism and this looked to be a chance to read some intelligent arguments about the way the media have been politicized (actually it has been for many decades going back to when newspaper publishers routinely ran for and won office), and what has morphed into weaponized divisive argument that defies what America should be about.The Life Span is about none of that. In fact it is a debate who time has either gone or cannot be vital until more immediate public concerns have been brought down from the precipice of bombing, (here in the US, mass shooting (In France) and the deliberate state sponsored murder of a reporter (Jamal Khashoggi). In Life Span the case is made that by calling your product an essay, the author has infinite freedom to rewrite prosaic history in the name of whatever esoteric poetical emotional truth that fits the writer. At the time my used edition was published in 2012 this may have been an important topic. In 2018 it adds poison to a well where the water already been made bitter.The book itself is a dramatization of an actual series of exchanges between an essayist and a fact checker. The essay in question is about the Las Vegas suicide by jumping by a teenager, Levi Presley. We are not told if the editor intends to publish the essay as a literal recitation of the facts or as a dramatization of the facts.John D’Agato is a well-established essayist. He has definite beliefs about the term. In this book he will argue passionately that the writer must serve art in preference to fact if by doing so the essayist helps the reader to experience a deeper and more aesthetically meaningful appreciation of the events under discussion. In fact the essay is a poorly defined medium of expression and it is legitimately plastic in the matter of content. A case can be made that it occupies literary space between fiction and non-fiction.D’Agato goes further; insisting that the term Non-fiction is new and that facts are rarely absolute. He tosses out several famously named essayists arguing that the history of the essay is the history of exactly his understanding of the rights and duties of the essayist. Earlier he established that in taking this assignment he made it clear to the editor that he is not a reporter and that he will not be bound by the rules of journalism.Perhaps on the strength of this warning, Jim Fingal is tasked with fact checking the proposed article and in writing is ordered to “comb through this marking anything and everything…” In taking the assignment, Jim is at once literal and increasingly meticulous and unforgiving. His questions everything from the number of seconds given for the boy’s fall to the color of bricks and the exact routes between locations.The author comes off as an arrogant, defender of his every invention and demonstrably wrong statement. The Fact Checker become so focused on his mission he will even challenge the facts as given in the report from the Coroner’s office.Ultimately I had little patience with either person.D’Agata will on two occasions make appeals to authority. In logic this argument can count as a fallacy or not. The way D’Agata applies the technique it is fallacious. He states the rules were set out by the ancient Roman orator, Cicero, among other and does not state those laws.Worse the writer states that If his reader feels betrayed when they realize how often an ostensibly nonfiction article is in fact fictional, he turns on the readership, complaining that they are too poorly educated to understand the writer’s rights. D’Agata could have made a reference to the failure of the 1913 audience to appreciate Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. There the portion of the audience that was known to reject anything new were when presented with ultra-modern music and lacking appreciation for the non-traditional choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky; they rioted.Instead the 2018 reader has the peculiar juxtaposing of a writer arguing for “Fake News” if the fakery is in service of art, and a time where the press is under increasing demands to clear not only the kinds of niggling fact checking of Fingal, but the creation of elaborate, fictional conspiracies to replace the prosaic, researched and fact checked.The Lifespan of a Fact is good writing. It is not apropos to the moment and does not serve D’Agata. It is a good book, but a prospective reader needs to know that this is not about journalism. It is a high-level discussion of a very particular type of writing, the essay.

A great book for attaining insight into the world of journalism and column writing. In this age of "fake news," this book brings the concepts of truth and fact into question. John's article is featured in the middle of the page, while his conversation with Jim, the fact checker, outlines the boarders. Their discussion focuses on a variety of issues surrounding the truth behind John's claims regarding a suicide in Las Vegas. From the color of the bricks on the Vegas Strip to the number of suicide victims discussed, this book makes you consider the necessity of writers always telling the truth and the fine line they have to walk between outright lying to the public and enticing the public to read their work. Would you care if a news reporter told you that the color of the president's tie was red when in reality it was blue, just because it sounded better within the paragraph? How about if 40 people were killed in a shootout instead of the 100 that a newsman reported? Which truth is more relevant? why? and is a reporter still a liar if he omits certain details? these are the questions addressed. A must have for understanding the balance between effective storytelling and accurate reportage.

A surprisingly engaging book that bares uncomfortable truths about journalism and what can be stated as fact. The exchanges between Fingal the Fact Checker and D'Agata the Tale Spinner are always entertaining and sometimes hilarious. D'Agata deserves a lot of credit for letting this book come to light because throughout it he seems to have little regard for facts, changing them at will. "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story," they used to say in journalism school. D'Agata follows this creed but is caught with his pants down.

I thought it would be about fake news, in the current political context, but not at all. It's a fascinating story comparing two peoples' versions of the truth. Is it more accurate to have every fact correct in an essay, or to present the correct thoughts and feelings via some creative license?
