The craftsmanship and beauty of Near Eastern and Oriental carpets is undeniable, but buying them can be a bit daunting. This book is a great resource and introduction to the variety of styles and patterns of these functional works of art. For the absolute novice, the first chapters detail what an oriental rug is and how they are made. Those more familar will want to skip this and get to the meat of the book, detailing care and design.The 49 full-color pictures provide a reference to the patterns, sizes and styles of the various carpets as well as abundant information regarding their place of origin and some history of how and by whom they were made. I found this to be the most useful and fascinating part of the book. The author provides other information such as price range and resale value - given the date of publication (my copy is from the late 1980s) and the normal changes in market and demand, this was less useful in its specifics, but a helpful guide in terms of relative price between styles and origin.

This book was recommended to me by a respected dealer in Persian rugs as not only a good introduction to Persian rugs, but as a very good ongoing reference. I purchased 5 copies of the book for myself and friends. I am now down to only my own personal copy. I consider it an indispensible guide for anyone who wants to learn about Persian rugs, and to some extent, rugs from other regions. I have a number of books on Persian rugs, including some published in Iran pre-1979 and post-1979, as well as the excellent reference book by the Eilands. This one is indispensible and my friends who have it agree! Highly recommended if you can still get it.

I am a newcomer in the world of persian rugs and found this book very useful. The more you read the more you understand that there is an entire world to discover and the author introduces you in this nice exotic world. It is by no means a complete guide on the subject but it is a very good starting point to understand the basics of the subject. I would highly recommend this book before reading other, more massive and detailed books.

As an owner of a small Persian rug shop, BewyacGroup.com, I highly recommend this great read. This book is for anyone fascinated with handmade rugs, their origin and how to find a great deal buying one.

Cox creates fertile dialectical space by weaving together elegant storytelling with scholarly observation. Through the accounts of her experiences with these girls and women, Cox attempts to reframe society's perception of Black girls as "at-risk," "deficient," and "too much, too loud" into one of "wonderful excess" and adaptability. I highly recommend this book.

A brilliant ethnography about an understudied topic. Professor Cox demonstrates mastery of a wide range of theoretical perspectives to understand how black girls and young women navigate the complexities of belonging as subjects of a city and a country that often forgets about them, as well as to one another. I'm putting this book on my very short list of works, including "The Selfish Gene" The Selfish Gene: 30th Anniversary Edition--with a new Introduction by the Author, Davies' "Deptford" Trilogy The Deptford Trilogy, and "The Nurture Assumption" The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do, Revised and Updated, that have fundamentally changed the way I view the world. It really doesn't matter whether one agrees completely with Blank or not as to the historical reason the term and concept came into our culture; those are interesting opinions. The incontrovertible fact is that "heterosexual" has a specific meaning, a meaning that changes over time, and a meaning that impacts ones understanding of all other aspects of gender and sex identity. The life-changing aspect of this book is, in other words, not so much Blanks specific explanation of what heterosexuality is and means but rather the underlying concept that its meaning is not self-obvious and is important to understand. From this point of view Blank's ideas become data in a personal analysis of an entire area of thought that had never occurred to me before.Another reviewer likens "Heterosexual" to post-modern "everything is a social construct" fallacy. I think seeing it that way completely misses the point. Of course who I am sexually is a physical reality, founded in my genes, my gestation, and my life experience. Who I actually am is not a construct but a reality. But the name given to that reality IS a social construct. Who falls under this umbrella, and who does not? I often call myself bisexual, for want of a better term, but never felt it is particularly accurate. Reading this book has led me to coin a new term, "NH", or "Not Heterosexual", which has some of it's own baggage but is perhaps a little more accurate. How many books will ever cause someone to redefine his own sexual orientation?Here's the reason I recommend this book to everyone: if you and your brother are monozygotic twins, and share the same sexual orientation, the reality of your own sexuality is still different from his. Your husband's sexuality is substantially different from that of your college boyfriend, even if they both self identify as "straight". Considering these facts will, I think, give anyone reading it a deeper understanding of themselves. For anyone who, like myself, is not (to use the APA term) "gender-normative" [...], or who is close to someone like me, I consider it essential reading.

Good thought and excellent prose construction. A+A good read for everybody, goes beyond academic boundaries.

This is a wonderful history that diligently researches a word that many use but few really understand. A compelling story of how and why we, as Western society (there is little to no mention of other cultures), refer to and think in certain ways about the heterosexual/homosexual dichotomy. I found this to be delightfully informative and well researched. There is a bit of, perhaps willful, disregard to whether certain historical shifts are causation a or merely corollaries of some greater force, however, this does not distract from the essential premise of this work. I would heartily recommend this to anyone looking to learn more about the history of Western sexuality, marriage, and family.

this is a popular history but very well balanced. I recommend to any one who is interested in the dichotomous sex relationships in our current culture.

Blank's exploration of this cultural norm is as thorough as I was hoping for. It opened my mind and helped me have a more nuanced understanding of sexuality and human relationships. I can't give higher praise than that as the quality of my relationships is where I find the value and balance of my life.

Excellent analysis. Thorough, informative, and provocative. The author gets a few points wrong but is otherwise very persuasive.

I am voluntarily reviewing an Advanced Reader Copy of this book that I received for free.Marie is a business administration student working at here family's automotive parts store, meets Mark , the owner of an auto repair shop, when she goes for a girl's night at her best friend's house and he is there to pick up his brother. Sparks fly and eventually things combust as they get to know each other as well as deal with Marie's overprotective family and other roadblocks. An adrenaline rush of romance abounds for readers 18+.

Motorhead is the fifth book in the Maple Mills series by Kate Gilead. It continues the overall story of a group of friends as the discover themselves and the loves of their lives. This book follows Marie, a 21 year old woman with a love of cars, as she meets and falls in love with Maek, a 35 year old autoshop owner and the brother of her best friend's fiance. They have an instant connection that grows into love as they discover their dreams, and overcome obstacles. Definitely recommended book.

Mark and Marie initially connect over the love they both have for cars. It's not long however before their connection grows into a romantic one. I loved how these two new that they wanted each other and didn't play any games. Now all Mark has to do is convince Marie's dad and five overprotective brothers he means business where she's concerned. This was an enjoyable sweet romance I highly recommend. I voluntarily received an advance arc copy for an honest review.

Marie is majoring in business administration, while working for her father and with her brothers. The family business is huge, and she's pretty much expected to stick with it. With so many older brother's, not to mention her father, dating has become a task. Not only their protectiveness, but the high bar she has set for herself. When she meets Mark, she's got her eyes on him immediately. There's a lot for her to pay attention to: school, work, an upcoming race, and now this sexy mechanic.Mark is a grease monkey through and through. Nothing clicks for him like engines do, everything just makes sense. He's started his own business, and has sworn off women while he gets it off the ground. One look at Marie, though, and he's got to get to know her. She intrigues him. His brother is warning him away from her family, who are not only protective, but the biggest auto parts distributors in the area. Mark isn't worried, though, he has to spend time with her.Soon, the two are spending more time together. Even just talking exhilarates them. Mark also wants to show Marie that he's not just wanting her body, he wants more. But there's a lot of things happening that have their attentions: this new romance, the prize at the end of the race, and something Marie's dad seems to be hiding. Not to mention Marie trying to make her own path. What will all this commotion do for the mechanic and the car girl?In full disclosure, I read this in exchange for an honest review. This is the fifth book in the Maple Mills series, but it can be read as a complete standalone. This is my first Kate Gilead, but it won't be my last, I'll definitely be digging into the rest of the series. The author also has her own style of writing, very casual. This book is sexy and intriguing, you'll be turning the pages to see what happens next. The romance between Mark and Marie is central, of course, but there's a lot happening in this book. In a good way, that has you reading to see what will happen. It doesn't feel rushed, rather, it's paced just right. Mark and Marie are awkward but easy together at first, like many real relationships start, it's kind of cute. The getting to know each other process deepens, and all kinds of things lay ahead of them to deal with. You'll like this one.

This is a new author to me but after reading this book she's going to be a regular read on my kindle. With a strong feisty female lead and a hot male that's as hot as she is feisty , this is a book that you will not get board reading . There’s a big race coming up where Marie will be driving for her family’s company and Mark will be trying to win the prize money to bankroll his new business. There’s also a bit of drama surrounding a secret that her father is keeping, and there’s the matter of Marie trying to figure out her own career, separate from her family’s business. This story has tremendous depth, not shying away from the dangers of racing nor the inherent conflicts in a family-run company.The chemistry between Mark and Marie is instant and white-hot, but Mark is careful and patient, making sure Marie knows he’s looking to the future and wants to do things right. Circumstances speed up the trajectory of their relationship, testing their new connection as well as their family ties.I really enjoyed this love story, start to finish. All thoughts are my own*This book is not for teen readers at all and this should not be labeled as young adult. This book has graphic depictions of: rape, sexual assault, threats of killing an animal, bestiality, sexual violence and strong language of both profanity and describing human anatomy. This isn't recommend for any sensitive readers and any teens under 18 due to the disturbing content.This book tackles the damsel in distress trope and is about a tradition that a man goes to slay the dragon in the tower and the damsel he rescues becomes his bride. Ama doesn't have any memories before she wakes up after being rescued by the man called Emory. But when coming to the kingdom, she realizes that women have no rights and can't stand up to the men in society. Emory is abusive in many ways to her and sees nothing wrong with it. All the male characters are awful, horny and violent men that are completely one dimensional. The "social commentary" this book tries to make is kind of offensive to me. I'm sick of media only portraying men as terrible people that doesn't deserve redemption in general. I get that this world sucks, but I'm sick of these type of violent stories being hailed for being "feminist" and "compelling."You get NO answers until the last 15 pages and the answers you do get aren't enough for the other several questions that are never addressed again. The answers you do get though are deeply disturbing and disgusting. Ama's character development at the end is so abrupt and has no room to really sink in that's it's all just surface level to me. This is way too violent, over done and again, not for teens. I was deeply disturbed by what was happening in this book.

4.5*TW: molestation, sexual abuse, beastiealityI want to first start off by saying that I really enjoyed this book! It was so truly feminist and I valued all the points it made during the degradation of our main character. It felt like I was constantly infuriated by how our main character was treated, but I shared that infuriated state with our main character and I felt that solidified the bond I had with her. All this being said, why is this book classified as YA?!?!?!?!?This book has a very sleeping beauty type fairy tale feel to it. It started out with prince Emory who climbs a mountain to get to the castle and once he is on top of this castle, urinated all over it as to "mark his territory". Also right within the first few chapters they talk about how his father died of a madness that he contracted from sleeping around. Essentially his father died of syphilis, but was not explicitly named in the book. Many erections were alluded to throughout, but also were not explicitly recognized. We were, however, given enough detail to make inferences. These were all used as tools to make statements that showed how objectified women are.Ama was the saved princess who knew nothing of her origin before her time asleep in the tower with a dragon. She was kind of just trying to figure everything out and she was constantly made out to be helpless as Prince Emory was always reminding her that he saved her. Emory started off as an okay character but he continued to lose stock as the book progressed.At one point Ama accidentally burned her hand and Emory was more worried about his damaged property (aka. her damaged flesh) then he was about her. He consistently showed he thought of her as his prize and not a person. I hated him so much and spent most of this book mad at him.I saw so much of general female troubles with men through all of Ama's experiences that made her easy to relate to. She was a strong female that I found myself actively rooting for.What makes this less of a YA novel is not just the highly sexualized content scattered throughout this book, but I don't know that a younger person would appreciate the pacing of the story itself. Much of the story is in the subtext and very little rests on the surface, which makes the overall pacing quite slow. But it is a quick read with short chapter.I am also happy to report the ending was perfect and i was happy to see the strength and independence Ama showed made it through to the very end.

When I saw the cover for Damsel by Elana K. Arnold, I had to know what lurked inside, and then when I read the synopsis, I wanted to dive into its pages. I love twisted fairy tales, especially when they feature strong female protagonists like Ama. I began reading Damsel and kept reading, and reading, and reading...until I finished it. I simply could not put it down.Written in third person omniscient, Damsel takes the damsel-in-distress trope and turns it on its head. What happens to a hero who discovers there's more to slaying a dragon than meets the eye? What happens when a damsel who was never truly in distress is rescued? What happens when It-Is-This-Way-Because-It-Has-Always-Been-This-Way is no longer good enough? Elana K. Arnold has answered those questions and created a truly wicked fairy tale in the process.Ama's story is also a timely one. As the real world watches more and more women stand up for themselves and say "I refuse to be a victim," Ama's plight as a damsel searching for her place and for her own identity becomes all the more poignant. For example, the following passage from Damsel holds so much meaning:"...You see, Ama, it is for men to create. It is for men to decide. It is for men to speak. It is your place to listen, and follow, and gestate. And those are no small things! For without women to listen, how would the men's words be heard?...You are important, Ama. Desperately important. But do not overreach."Sound familiar? In the time of the MeToo and Nevertheless She Persisted movements, Damsel is a unique and timely reminder of the ridicule and barriers women have faced throughout history, and how something seemingly as benign as fairy tales can impact our perceptions for ourselves and our place in the world.My only complaint with Damsel, and it's a minor one, is that I had figured out The Big Reveal early on in the tale. This didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book, especially since The Big Reveal did include a twist I had not considered, but I do think the author could have been a little more subtle in her hints toward The Big Reveal.
