I have no college background in music but I do enjoy history. Professor Greenberg was outstanding. I enjoyed every lecture and finished this course with new found appreciation for music. Not only did Professor Greenberg have a mastery of his subject but he was able to sprinkle in just enough humor to make it fun. What more can I say but you can not go wrong in purchasing this course.

Professor Greenberg has done a sterling job with this course. I was initially reluctant. Although my MA provided me with many perspectives from which to view history, music was not one of these. It wasn't that I doubted Greenberg, rather that I doubted whether my own grasp of music would be up to the task. I needn't have worried. He manages to weave between the historical record and the roles and contributions of the makes and users of music with a professional's grace. Not only was the whole thing interesting and with each element well chosen, but his moments of (Parisian?) irreverence spiced the whole thing up and made the style and approach unique in my experience. The only course that I have subsequently listened to a second time in its entirety, and then again in 'excerpt' mode during my spells in my car and workshop. Thoroughly good value.

I just finished this latest course of Prof. Robert Greenberg, a musical mentor for decades via his courses, whom I now have the pleasure to also know personally. Who knew that he was an accomplished historian too? This course, most unusual for Greenberg, is more about history than music, placing 24 musical pieces – many relatively unknown – within the context of historical events in which they were composed.With over 200 references, the course is rigorously academic and yet, typical of Greenberg, opinionated, irreverent and entertaining. He is an articulate speaker, a grand actor, a sensitive poet, and yes, forever the comedian. At one point he even utters a bulls*** cough as he describes some falsehood perpetrated by violinist Eduard Reményi upon the memory of his former colleague Johannes Brahms.Greenberg provides surprising new insights into historical events one might think they know well. In one instance a comment he made about Ottoman Turks (a subject I know very well) and their four hundred year rivalry with the Habsburg Empire took me by surprise. “How ironic,” he said, “that when they both collapsed, they did so as allies.” Indeed! I had never thought of it that way. There are many other similar epiphany moments in the course.I thoroughly enjoyed this course and highly recommend it to anyone.

The ancestors of the local people were Scotch-Irish and English. They came to the mountains in the 1700's. The mountains are rugged therefore they were completely isolated. As a result, many of the customs, ballads, speech and tales are from the 1700's. In "The History of English"Dr. Cratis Williams, a longtime family friend, addresses some of the speech patterns/words from the "back hills”.In summary, the book is fiction but the custom is true. It really happened.

This book took me back to the simple and powerful story of grace that is found in Jesus taking our place on the cross as the blameless Lamb of God! It reminded me of all the ways I tried to earn salvation, living a 'good' life in my strength and ways; and all the ways that I have tried to remain in Christ in my own strength and understanding... And eventually knowing and understanding grace and finding rest in Christ alone. It is a beautifully written story with an intriguing mix of characters. Whilst deep, it is also funny and moving emotionally, particularly living out what Cadi has made things mean and the effect this has on her. I can totally relate to that! And like her, it took the TRUTH, Jesus to redeem me and speak what is true to my heart dispelling all the lies. I would recommend this book for anyone: looking to return to their first love in Jesus; seeking and searching for the truth and wanting to understand the message of the gospel in a non-theological and non-threatening way; who enjoys good Christian fiction that brings the Word of God alive; and anyone who has experienced childhood emotional trauma that has negatively impacted your esteem. It will help the latter process in the light of the Word of God walking with Cadi as she processes her experiences and finds healing and new life.

Francine Rivers writes thought provoking, mesmerizing allegory about the people of the Appalachian hills. She explores the tragedy that comes of secrecy and lies. The characters are engaging and pulled me into their tragic lives until the truth through Jesus comes to light. There are many twists and turns and surprises throughout her writing. I read it in two days. I highly recommend this book.

I love reading historical fiction about places I have never been. Though these people at not real, their characters hold a grip on us. We know their hearts because we have hearts the same. It was amazing how the Word of God was only spoken by the man, yet the children spoke it to others. Only have faith! Excellent story, as always, from Rivers.

This author is a master of storytelling, and this story of hers may be my favorite one. It's beautiful and grips your heart and mind. From the first you feel the tensions of little Cadi. She knows something is wrong. Something is not what it seems. And you can't stop reading because you want to know, too. Some writers use so much description and flowery language that it over shadows the story. Not Ms. Rivers. Her story captures you from the first. It's compelling. You just have to read. It's just a piece of art. Beautiful.

If you are interested in Southern Appalachian history and our cultural connection to Europe, you will find this book fascinating, as did I, albeit a bit weird. Great historical fiction based in the historical culture of early Southern Appalachia. Tends toward the supernatural while being realistic. (I also recommend an older book set in the Southern Appalachians---Where the Lilies Bloom---both in book and film.)

I still bought them because each book will give some other basic info, missed in another book. So altogether they will provide a full range of doll making wisdom. I also understood that attending a workshop is a basic need. Once you have attended one or two workshops, you will make the most out of the book you got....

These three doll makers are known for their work. Each has a different style which is presented well in this book. If you like funky then elinor is for you. Sophisticated is for Barbara with Patti being in between both. The first real doll I made was one of Patti's. I still have her. I made the flat wall doll that Barbara has in the book. She was fun to make. this is great way to get into doll making.

The book is in very good condition, and I’m happy to own this favorite.

This book is a real must have for anyone wanting to make cloth dolls. The illustrations are beautiful and the instructions are clear and easy to understand.
