This is the first positive review I'm giving while still reading a book. First of all, to fully enjoy the book I feel like I have to read it in tiny tiny chunks to let the content sink in, thus it's taking forever to get through it. The second reason is that it has been so consistent in writing level and quality of content that I am certain it will continue that way until the end.In a nutshell, this book is a series of blog posts, written and curated by a known software persona. It deals with everything a software developer is likely to encounter during their career: Technical , managerial and business issues. All subjects are treated with a writing style that cuts to the heart of the matter with light humor and strong metaphors.There are two reasons that this book doesn't deserve the fifth star:1) Most of the articles were written over 10 years ago.2) I am not entirely sure whether Joel's ideas seem so compelling because he is right or because he knows how to sound like he's right.For these reasons I try to force myself to take everything with a grain of salt, a somewhat fun-spoiling effort.If you've been in the software business for some years, this book will speak to you. Get it, enjoy it, but don't take it too seriously.

I think the essays span a period of several years ending in the early 2000's. Therefore some of them are very dated, like several chapters on how to write highly detailed specs and schedules before starting a project.Some of the articles on interviewing, incentives, wireframing, and engineering were thought-provoking and still relevant, but the self-aggrandizing and pervasive Microsoft bias wore me out after a while.

Joel on Software is a collection of Joels blog posts. There are maybe 40 posts and the book is about 350 pages. Making all posts independent makes it easy to pick up the book every now and then, read one, and move on.Joel has an opinion on everything and a fairly strong one. He is an excellent writer and is able to convey his opinion often in a humorous way. I very often completely disagree with his opinion, but that did not make the book any less valuable. He writes his opinion and clarifies the argumentation. He writes it in such a way that I find it worth reading.There are too many posts to summarize. Some of the really great ones are, "the joel test" which he explains how you can be a better programming. "Daily builds are your friends" in which he covers the importance of daily builds. "The law of the leaky abstractions" is a true classic explaining that our industry keeps abstracting but that non of these abstractions is absolute so therefore the total amount of knowledge a person needs to know will increase. "Two stories" which describes the difference between two companies in their culture. And it goes on and on.I really recommend to get Joel on Software (or his new More Joel on Software) and just, every now and then, read one of the posts and reflect about his opinion. Great work.

This book by the well-known software developer, entrepreneur and blogger Joel Spolsky is a comprehensive collection of the most interesting articles that have appeared on the Joel on Software website in the course of the last five years.If you're a devote follower of Joel, like me, there's almost nothing here that you haven't probably already read online. Still, it can be useful to have all this content nicely reorganized and reprinted. As Joel puts it, the book is a heck of a lot more cohesive than the website, where by cohesive I mean «can be read in the bathtub without fear of electrocution.» At the very least, it can be a nice present from a developer to his/her manager, who might get a couple of clues they're still missing.Inside here, there's plenty of clues indeed and Joel will be very happy to share them with his readers, drawing from his experience as developer, program manager at Microsoft, software entrepreneur and Israeli paratrooper.Not everything here has to do with technical matters, but you'll also find something about the economy, managing people, business strategy and insulating pipes. This makes for a pleasant and varied reading, particularly if your ambitions go beyond being a good developer. In any case, you can count on the first third of the book to give you plenty of advice in this respect, while the second third deals with managing developers. The third part is a semi-random collection of topics, the majority of which deal with strategy. At the end of the book, you can find three articles on .NET and an appendix with questions and answers taken from the website.Joel's basic approach can be described as very down-to-earth, beware-of-hype, no-silver-bullet philosophy. This is not to say that what he writes is bland and clichéd. Quite the contrary. He does not refrain from being original and even controversial at times, at the risk of being unpopular in denouncing the excess hype that sometimes surrounds topics like eXtreme Programming or Open Source, or attacking entrenched myths like network transparency or software reuse.In any case, he his always witty, sometimes downright humorous and never haughty.

After purchasing and raving about "Let's Hubble" last year I was eagerly awaiting the book two that Melanie refers to at the end of the book. So I happily pre-ordered "Hubble Stitch" assuming that coming out a year later this would be book two. It's not. It's the SAME BOOK with a different name and some slight differences in photographs and page arrangements, but it covers exactly the same content. There's nothing new here. So if you have the first book you don't need this one. If you don't have the first one I highly recommend that you get one of them. Since I wrote in detail about the content of the book in my review of Let’s Hubble I’ll only focus on the differences between the two versions in this review.Let's Hubble has a superior spiral binding with a cover over the spiral so it lies flat to read plus has a spine you can read when it's sitting on your shelf. The new book, Hubble Stitch, features a different first page for each project. In the previous book the projects have small page top titles. It is a little difficult to determine where a project begins. In the new book each project is heralded with a bold page title with a large photo of the project. This is a more typical way for projects to be presented and is preferable.Here’s a detailed description of what I mean about the project presentation:In Let's Hubble Project 2 - Spex Vortex (or what I call the ruffle) begins with a page size photo on page 24 and no title. You turn the page to page 25 and find a small title at the top of the page. It's white print in letters a little larger than the text on a gray/blue bar, one-quarter inch high, across the top of the page. The instructions for this project are completed on pages 25 and 26 and the same title bar is on page 26. When you turn to page 27 you find project 3 announced in the same little gray/blue bar. It's actually a bit difficult to read the project titles in white against the gray/blue background. It’s not obvious where a project begins. This is sort of annoying.In Hubble Stitch the projects are presented with the same photos but different titling and arrangement. Spex Vortex begins on page 28 with a large print title. The letters are in bold black against the white page and are three-eighths of an inch high. It's VERY clear that a new project is being presented. Page 29, the facing page, has the large page-sized photo of the project. The format of the instructions and the diagrams are the same in both books, but Hubble Stitch follows them with another large photo of the project on page 31 above the Variations suggestions. In addition the list of supplies for the project are enclosed in a box on the first page of the project. This makes them easy to locate.Personally I much prefer the binding on Let’s Hubble and the project presentation arrangement in Hubble Stitch. The content is the same. And I have both books. But you only need one of them.

I feel duped by Interweave.com for republishing a book from just one year ago, changing mostly the title and the cover, leading me to believe I was buying a newly published book by the same author. I keep careful records of the books I purchase so I don't duplicate a purchase.

This may be an unfair post since this style didn't appeal to me. I'm always anxious to learn new bead weaving methods so I wanted to find out about this stitch, but the style of the projects in the book just weren't to my liking; but it very well may be for someone else so make sure you look through Amazon's "Look Here" option to see if it's for you.

This book illustrates very plainly how to accomplish this stitch and has many little tips & tricks to help you do it right! I started with the very first project and its going along just fine. I can't wait to progress to the rest of the projects. Nice big print so it's very easy to read.

Recently received this book and can hardly wait to try two drop and three drop Hubble Stitch methods. Learning the basic stitch was fun but now want to move onward.

Ethan E. Gorenstein is clinical director of the Behavioral Medicine Program at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and a professor of clinical psychology in the department of psychiatry at Columbia University. He is also the author of The Science of Mental Illness (Academic Press). He has an active clinical practice devoted to the use of evidence-based psychological treatment methods for problems of both children and adults.Ronald Comer has been a professor in Princeton University’s Department of Psychology for the past 27 years and has served as Director of Clinical Psychology Studies for most of that time. He is also currently the director of the department’s undergraduate program. Professor Comer has received the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at the university. His course "Abnormal Psychology" is one of the university’s most popular, and he has offered it almost every year since his arrival at Princeton. He is also a practicing clinical psychologist and serves as a consultant to the Eden Institute for Persons with Autism and to hospitals and family practice residency programs throughout New Jersey. Additionally, he holds an adjunct position as Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the UMDNJ–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. In addition to writing Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology, Professor Comer is the author of the textbook Abnormal Psychology, now in its fourth edition, and the co-author of Case Studies in Abnormal Psychology. He has also published a number of journal articles in clinical psychology, social psychology, and family medicine. Professor Comer was an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania and a graduate student at Clark University. Even though this book is a little dated, it came highly recommended by others in an airbrush forum that I regularly frequent. I've found it to be a great primer on general background technical knowledge of color, paint, and light theory that's concise and consumable by a non-scholar of art/science. It's just enough to let you know why you need to know the background, while not getting bogged down in it. The rest of the book is laid out in a way that really helps a beginner/intermediate do exercises and/or learn techniques that get your learning curve cut down. Like everyone else I've looked at a lot of online videos, but this book is a great way to fill in the gaps that video tutorials don't even cover. It moves from beginner to advanced techniques, and covers a variety of styles that people may be focused on doing. Lastly it wraps up with a nice gallery of work from a variety of airbrush artists of differing styles and it's both wow and inspiring. The reason for 4 stars (instead of 5) is that by being dated, it doesn't cover some of the newer equipment and paints, so that doesn't fully help someone that's looking for help deciding on specific equipment to buy, but honestly there is a lot of information in other places and the book stands on its own as a good reference everyone should have just on the technical and technique content.

If you are a beginner at airbrushing this is THE book to get. The author has an incredible background. The subject matter is extremely thorough and covers the technical aspects of the various types of airbrushes, using them for the first time, step by step exercises in a multitude of procedures. The pace is very slow and methodical. The author has a way of writing that makes you feel like you are in a classroom of a very expensive course.

This book has a real good mix of technical (science) and philosophical (art)... a couple sections I swore were going to go into quantum physics! HAHA... All of the scientific and math theory may be a bit to much on learning how a combustion engine works when you want to learn how to drive a car...but it is useful to learn how to adapt and explore on your own, so one just does not learn how to make the same old stamped out stuff you have seen everywhere. He incorporates some really good techniques to grow your own style and create your own visions.I just started airbrushing this month and feel this book has been a great help in using the airbrush to put down on paper what I have in my head and how to get better at it.I wish he had updated more stuff though as this was written in the 80's ...new things like the MAC valve etc. I had already bought my airbrush and compressor from researching online...the is my second airbrush book and the other one I have and the other ones I have researched all start out with the same ancient cave airbrushes and how to choose the right brush...which is useful, but since this is so dated he did not go into all of the new compressors and tools etc. AS others have said..the shield and masking sections make this book worth buying...

I wanted to learn more about the use of this tool. I think it is a great book. This because he has packed so much information in it. If you study it in depth, and do the exercises you will be rewarded. He is short and to the point with each bit of information. If you just give it a quick read you might be disapointed.

A good book for beginners. I was looking for more on the technique of how to use an airbrush but this does give some excellent information on the care and maintenance of airbrushes, air supply choices and using different media with the airbrush. I am glad I purchased it.

I don't give many 5s but this one is a ten....the doctor writes from experience with an amazing combination of practical insight tempered with an equal amount of compassion for families and patients during the worst of times....he also knows how the medical system works and how it could be improved...the kind of doctor I wish we had attending the death of my wife in 1985 from aplastic anemia following breast cancer....I can only hope for this kind of doctor when my time comes...it should be required reading for everyone who accepts their mortality...the others will just have to wing it...I will be reading it over and over...the book also is a perfect example how kindle should work....the table of contents is live and easily linked to the chapters and the references and bibliography are truly professional...there is nothing to complain about in this book, except that it places a great deal of responsibility on patients to manage their own care when doctors are paid to sell the most that is possible if it is paid by insurance...something that most are not competent to do...I wish the doctor a long and happy retirement because he surely has earned it...it is too bad our society still cannot handle such an emotional topic...

Life is so much harder when you constantly worry about this one or that one, honestly it's so true for myself years ago, I used to think college was the only way to level up in life, boy was I wrong. Im not saying college isn't an excellent choice but it's definitely not the only one. Working on yourself and healing all those wounds, and letting go of all those negative and insignificant people in your life is key. Following that beautiful energy you feel when you do something you love and not allowing anyone to stand in your way. Rachel focuses so much on woman and it's such a breath of fresh air. Being a strong, beautiful and independent woman is wonderful, and don't let anyone tell you anything different.

Lately I've been the queen of making excuses and conclusions about why my life goes a certain way, and reading this simple and effective book kind of opened my eyes to the obstacles I create for myself when I give myself so much constraint on time and conditions because of my caretaker role. I felt really good and had some clarity on how to move forward confidently in my life after reading this, without making excuses or apologizing, but by making the best of what I do have and actually being open to opportunities that present themselves. I also love that the summaries are also great affirmations just to look at and reread gives me more confidence in myself and the power of a woman unrestrained and unapologetic in the world.

Amazing Book! Got both the Audible and the actual book and I love listening to Rachel read the book to me. This is what I did with Girl, Wash Your Face and I now hear her in my head motivating me. I totally recommend this book if you feel that you are to be doing bigger and better things with your life but you can’t get past yourself.
