About the Author
Mike Barrett has been helping people do better on standardized tests since he was in high school. In college, he worked briefly for Kaplan but left when it became clear to him that the Kaplan method was irreconcilably different from the way he naturally thought about the test. A few months after Mike graduated from college with a degree in linguistics, his younger brothers needed help with the SAT, so he taught them his approach to the test. Word of their success spread throughout their high school, and Mike was soon offering informal SAT tutoring to a few dozen of his brothers' friends. One of those students recommended to Mike that he set up his own SAT preparation company. He thought about that for a couple of weeks and decided to pursue it. Since then, Mike has used a variety of channels to help tens of thousands of students with the SAT, PSAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, GMAT, ISEE, and SSAT. He regularly travels to work with students all across the United States, and consults with students all over the world through Skype. He speaks at live events as well, and is available for booking. Mike's SAT strategies are so different from the traditional approach because he analyzes standardized tests from the ground up, rather than simply assuming that they cover the material they claim to cover. In other words, most SAT tutors and courses teach the same math, reading, and writing skills that you learn in high school, because they take the College Board's word then it claims that the SAT is a test of college readiness. This book was absolutely worth it. Barrett changed my whole perspective on the test and really helped me understand what I needed to do in order to get a high score. He clearly explains how the SAT is made and why understanding this is so crucial to doing well on it. I used this book all summer to study for my SAT and got a 1550 on my first try!!
I read this book so carefully and took so many notes that I can say I literally spent at least three entire days with it. And it payed out! Went from 1220 to 1460.
This book is hands down the most useful book you could use to raise your score for the New SAT.I’m a rising junior scheduled to take the SAT this October, and so far my family’s spent hundreds of dollars on outside tutors and tuition programs to teach me the “hidden secrets†of the SAT and understand the ins and outs of this standardized test. This book will cover nearly all the strategies taught by outside, private tutors AND teach you how to truly understand the test, why the College Board designed it the way it is, and how to exploit its weaknesses to your advantage.Not only that, but you get detailed answer explanations for every question of every section of four real College Board SAT tests, covering why every wrong answer is wrong and why every right answer is objectively right.This book has been my holy grail in self-preparation for the New SAT, and I highly recommend you buy it if you are serious about raising your score by at least a couple hundred points.If you are still unsure about this book, just let its five-star reviews speak for themselves…Enjoy!
Amazing test prep. A weekish before the SAT I realized I should probably study, so off I went to Amazon to find a book - there was no class, tutor, or online video that I felt could really help me in the amount of time I had left. I saw the Black Book at the top of the page, but after hearing it had 600 pages immediately looked for another option. I read online about the best books to use and eventually came back to this behemoth. Okay, 600 pages or not, I guess this was the book. I got the book that week before my first SAT, and, while trying to read 600 pages seemed impossible, actually reading the book wasn't as hard as it initially seemed because the way they write is easy to understand and engaging. Plus, probably over half of the pages were walkthroughs of the first four practice tests so there wasn't actually 600 pages you have to read every line of. The walkthroughs, though, were invaluable as they helped me understand how to work through all of the problems multiple different ways (you can see how others might answer that you never thought of, and that might actually be better). If you don't have a lot of time before the test, or you don't want to read all 600 pages, you can just do one or two of the walkthroughs and that will reduce a lot of pages. For me, each night I read one test section's material/tips, did the first practice test on that section (I printed the practice tests out myself-they aren't in the book), and then scored it and evaluated how I could improve using his walkthroughs. This meant that after four days I had read about the reading, math, writing, and essay (the book is structured in that order) and had finished the first practice test. After that, I did one whole practice test and reviewed it using his walkthroughs for the next two nights. At this point, my score hadn't improved a lot since the first practice test, but each time I had encountered new problems that I wasn't sure about and after looking at the walkthroughs felt confident in being able to do next time. On the day of the test, I felt much better about my timing, skills, and the test's structure overall because of Mike and Patrick's book. One of the questions I had gotten wrong and reviewed in a walkthrough the night before actually appeared on the test! Not yet sure of the score, but I can say it didn't seem as hard as I thought it would be solely due to their solid advice and practice walkthroughs. 10/10 recommend to anyone, whether you have a lot of time to study or not!Update: The first SAT I took (June 2018), the one I wrote this review about originally, I got a 1500. I wanted to take it one more time, but I then procrastinated studying again and with one week left reviewed the book and took the remaining practice test that the book covers. I also looked back over the printed practice tests I did the first time, finding where I commonly made mistakes. For the August 2018 SAT I got a 1530. This book was amazing not only for how to think about the test, but also just to review concepts for both math and grammar.
SAT Prep Black Book: The Most Effective SAT Strategies Ever PublishedHands down best thing I ever did. I have a exam on Nov 4 and I just received this book today. Spent the night reading the first 70 pages. This book just made me realize I can have better marks than what I was hoping for. I was skeptical about getting even a 700 on reading and writing section. After the first 70 pages and using the methods written, I answered a couple of questions without even reading the passage. I was completely blown away by it. Best 29 bucks ever spent. With this knowledge I am looking forward to get around 780. This book completely stated the exact mistakes I was making reading a passage, and how it prevented me from getting answers right. I still have yet to read the writing and math section, but I am optimistic that the book will help me in those sections as well.To be honest this is my first review, and Mike Barrett, I would like to thank you for helping me out here. Your book helped me understand the test better and reduce my stress and anxiety.I would definitely recommend people to buy it. If you are expecting practice questions and other stuff like you find in Kaplan, barron's and Princeton review, you wont find them in the book. But whats inside will completely amaze you. So simple yet never thought about.
Our teaching center helps kids who want to do well on the ACT and SAT, and also help those who did not get good scores do better the next time around. We have tried every product out there, and ALL of the kids do well following the strategies outlined in this book -- and some with some very dramatic increases over a short time. It's absolutely the best guidance on SAT strategies (and their ACT book, too). You will NOT be disappointed. Please know you do have to buy the Official ACT guide to make the best use of the guidance, however.
