National Geographic Readers: Koalas

From Booklist

Cute, cuddly koalas are often mistaken for bears, but this book dispels that and many other myths. Koalas’ ecosystem, life cycle, feeding habits, and social behaviors are all discussed in straightforward detail. The publisher categorizes this series by readability, and this book, a level one, is written for kids who are just learning to read on their own. The text, therefore, is concise and contains plenty of sight words. Silly riddles and interesting trivia dot the pages, and the maps included live up to the standards set by other National Geographic Kids books. Full-color photographs are not only engaging and attractive but also serve to provide context for emergent readers. A picture glossary is included in the back matter. As an added incentive for reading, this edition is one of the many books on the publisher’s website that include related puzzles, games, quizzes, and a downloadable poster. Grades K-2. --Erin Anderson

My son (7) and I (Mom) reviewed this book for Mother Daughter Book Reviews. We both gave it 5 stars. Here are our thoughts:SON SAYS:This book is all about koalas. It has lots of pictures and you learn lots of things about koalas like they carry their babies in a pouch, they have two thumbs, and lots more. The pictures of the koalas were adorable and I loved them alot. The pictures were great and there were some things in the book I already knew about because we went to Australia last year. I liked how they showed how words are pronounced like “aw-STRALE-YUH”. I already knew a lot about koalas but I did learn about the scent patch that only a male koala has. They use it to rub it on trees to tell other animals that it’s their territory. I also learned that koalas sleep 18 hours a day and eat 5 hours a day and only have 1 hour left in the day. What do they do with that hour? I loved it and it was the best book ever. When I was looking at the National Geographic catalogue, the first book I wanted was Koalas. Everybody would like this book especially kids who like fuzzy, cuddly animals.MOM SAYS:I knew that when my son saw Koalas in the National Geographic Spring Catalogue that he would be all over the book. Even though the book is a Level 1 National Geographic Reader, I knew this was the book for him. Koalas is all about … you guessed it … KOALAS! As with most National Geographic publications, Koalas features absolutely stunning photography of all kinds of koalas in all kinds of poses. Every time we flipped the page, both my son and I went “awww….” Koalas are, hands down, the cutest animals ever (except when they are new born joeys and are hairless and look like tiny little aliens).Aside from the beautiful photos, this little 32 page book is filled with facts about koalas from what they look like, parts of their bodies and their function, where they live, what they eat, how they care for their babies, and what they do all day (i.e., basically sleep and eat). The book includes pronounciation guides for some of the trickier words like eucalyptus and Australia and introduces words relevant to koalas like marsupial, habitat, and mammal providing definitions at the end of the book. Finally, the National Geographic Society is dedicated to the conservation of the planet including all the living creatures it sustains; therefore, there is a little section about the dangers koalas face including the encroachment by humans into their natural habitat leading to injuries and deaths. There is a little write-up about the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie in New South Wales which is dedicated to helping injured and sick koalas. Needless to say, my son has a clear vision of what he wants to be when he grows up (apparently I can live in an apartment beside him in Australia where he will be working as a koala rescuer). My Bottom Line:Koala features stunning photograph, interesting facts about koalas, fun little jokes and activities, and the introduction of new concepts such as marsupial, mammals, and habitat. I highly recommend this fantastic book to children who love furry and adorable animals ages 4 years and older.* This book was provided to me by the publisher free-of-charge in exchange for our honest reviews. All opinions expressed are our own. *

I purchased this book along with the Ty Beanie Baby "Eucalyptus the Koala" for my niece for Christmas. She loved both. I found the book to be informative and very educational. It provides basic information about Koalas. You learn everything from their diets, to their habitat. While the older elementary school students may consider this an easy read, the information is invaluable and can be used for science or book reports. Not to mention younger readers can improve their lexile scores.

Love the book! So great for my classroom! Super fast shipping! Thanks so very much!

My granddaughter adores Koalas and she is going to flip over this magazine!! Bright, vivid pictures are really going to capture her 10 year old heart! Thank you so much, NatGeo for all of your exceptional magazines!!

My son loves this book. It's "real". Great for a young early/emerging reader interested in Koalas. Educational.

This National Geographic reader is a wonderful book for children, I ordered this book for my granddaughter she did a report in her 1st grade class on the animals of Austraila it was a big help to her.
