Review
“Smith’s new book is scorching in both its steady cognizance of America’s original racial sins . . . and apprehension about history’s direction. . . . These historical poems have a homely, unvarnished sort of grace.â€â€•The New York Times “The poems in Wade in the Water are full of memorable images nimbly put together by Smith’s exquisite sense of timing and her feel for the kind of language appropriate to the poem.â€â€•The New York Times Book Review “Smith brings great intelligence and sensitivity to her poems, leading readers deeper into other people’s stories―and ultimately into their own humanity.â€â€•The Washington Post“Smith’s poetry is an awakening itself.â€â€•Vogue“In these poems, with both gentleness and severity, Smith generously accepts what is an unusually public burden for an American poet, bringing national strife home, and finding the global in the local.â€â€•NPR.org“With formal precision and clarity, Smith’s poems dance the boundaries between private and public, give voice to the voiceless, and shine with a resolute spiritual vision.â€â€•San Francisco Chronicle “[Wade in the Water] considers the state of the union with characteristic grace. . . . Smith holds this chorus together quite beautifully, often embedding contrasting fragments of text and tone in classical forms and schemes.â€â€•Harper’s“Smith is the country’s poetic caretaker, calling both for collective reckoning and collective empathy.â€â€•The Atlantic “Wade in the Water . . . deftly covers 250 years of the American experience, from the refugee’s plight to a company’s toxic spill tothe complications of black motherhood.â€â€•Mother Jones“In lines that are as lyrical as they are wise . . . Smith makes connections between the current state of American culture and its history.â€â€•BuzzFeed“Deftly, Tracy K. Smith―the reigning poet laureate of the United States―illuminates America’s generational wounds.â€â€•New York Magazine“Tracy K. Smith presents a clear-eyed portrait of the present, reconsiders the past and offers love as an ethical response to injustice. . . . As Smith traverses time and tragedy, she returns to the idea that love is a radical and transformative force, one with a political and public function.â€â€•Star Tribune (Minneapolis) “We are in good worlds with Smith leading the poetic charge, as Wade in the Water attests.â€â€•The Millions“The poems in Wade in the Water are―in classic Smith fashion―gorgeously nuanced in music and in feeling and occasionally offbeat in their logic. . . . Smith lands on the power of art and its ability to pierce us ‘suddenly / By pillars of heavy light.’â€â€•Poets.org“Majestic. . . . This is a formally varied, masterful collection from the nation’s poet laureate.â€â€•BookPage“Bolstered by an array of sources, the poems gaze outward and observe with an incredibly perceptive eye. The past presses up against the present, and empathy hums consistently below as a driving force behind the collection’s explorations of religion, history, prejudice, and environmentalism.â€â€•The Adroit Journal “Readers will be moved by this carefully crafted collection. It is entirely new and innovative.â€â€•New York Journal of Books“Wade in the Water examines . . . injustice (political and personal) with sharp insight and telling detail. . . . Smith weaves together past and present, personal and political in ways that are at once urgent and timeless.â€â€•The Arkansas International “On a craft level, these poems are impeccable. . . . I know brilliance when I read it and this book is brilliant.â€â€•Roxane Gay, Goodreads“Poetry requires acts of exquisite selection and distillation that Smith, poet laureate of the United States, performs with virtuosity and passion throughout her profoundly affecting fourth collection. . . . The sacred and the malevolent are astutely juxtaposed in this beautifully formed, deeply delving, and caring volume.â€â€•Booklist, starred review“For Smith, poetry is hospitable: accommodating whatever she is moved to write. Her work witnesses, protests and raises its own roof. . . . Smith emerges as a poet in charge of her own creation myth and a recorder of destructive realities.â€â€•The Observer (UK)

This is a wonderful book of poetry. The book contains four collections with collections II and III being the best. Number II contains what Smith calls erasure poems, which I had never read before. These were very affecting as she crafted poetry out of the Declaration of Independence and correspondence between a southern family regarding the sale of slaves. The most profound poem in the book is "I Will Tell You the Truth About This, I Will Tell You All About It." Using words written by African Americans during the Civil War, Smith has written something unforgettably poetic. Number IV is the least cohesive collection but many of her poems in it ("Beatific", "4 1/2") are excellent. "Urban Youth" - "In the '70s, everything shone bright as brass" - I especially loved.I think that many folks greatly under-appreciate poetry in today's world. In this book Tracy K. Smith shows why she is poet laureate of the United States. Highly recommended.
Beautifully written poems. So touching, and direct.Expressed with clarity, the story of civil war, and the treatment of colored soldiers while recruiting for the Union army. How sad, how touching and the fraud, discrimination and suffering at the hands of those under whose command they were fighting.A must read for all.We should never forget.Satendra P. A few weeks ago, I had the amazing privilege of attending an event where Tracy K. Smith came to read her poetry. I had never heard her poetry before, but by the end of the event I was deeply moved, and immediately ordered this book. Smith does captures so well the frustration, heartache, and also hope that is the struggle for equality in America, and her poems helped me to better see where progress has been made as well as where equality is still lacking. Through her words, I was better able to see the racial injustice which persists within the mindset of American society, and I felt more motivated to work to change that mentality. Smith’s poems about environmental responsibility are so poignant as well; the poem in which she compares the Earth to the collective younger sister of humanity hit me hard. It made me think about how vulnerable our world is, and how I would feel if my own little sister were taken advantage of and hurt by others.Overall, I highly recommend this collection of poetry for anyone looking to read writing that is both beautiful and refreshing. Smith is such a talented poet, and while hearing her perform live is of course the best option, her voice still comes through strong in her written poetry. Before reading this collection, I wasn’t really interested in reading new poetry, but this book alone has made me change my mind. Tracy K. Smith is a living testament to the fact that great poetry is not just a thing of the past, but that it has an important place in modern literature as well.
Smith's beautiful poems take readers on a national journey from our roots through the present day. Food for the soul in this current moment.
A truly beautiful and readable collection of poems by a new American treasure. Tracy Smith's found poems in historical documents and influenced by current events are moving, crisp, and will stay with you.
Love Life on Mars, this is right on par with that.
Wow! History retold so we see anew what impact actions have on us all.
I had a really hard time getting into her poetry. I just didn't like her writing style I guess.
