This book is worth it for the chapter on intermittent fasting alone. Throw in all of the other gold Jackson drops on you in other chapters and we are truly not worthy. If this book doesn't get you excited to start taking things seriously and finally get a six pack then I don't know what will. Super practical science-based advice that makes so much sense when you see it laid out this way. Highly recommend.

Jackson was my trainer for a long time until he moved to LA. I never thought I could get a 6 pack but working with him I did. He really knows what he's talking about -- from exercise to nutrition. The proof is in the pudding: look at his own results! I'll never understand why people hire trainers or read fitness books from people who are out of shape. Jackson is the real deal. Read his book if you want to get real results.

Head-and-Shoulders above anything I've ever read on writing proposals & RFPs. Only author to show three levels/models of communication:informative (conveying information), evaluative (what your conclusions were about something you evaluated and how you arrived at those conclusions) and persuasive (getting others to buy into your recommendations). If it isn't brilliant ... it's sure darn close. Reads well ... interestingly written. Must-have for anyone that sells B2B or uses persuasion extensively in his/her business activities.

Really good detail on helping win business with great proposals. Our sales team uses this model, so reading it helped our marketing team better support their efforts.

I've been involved in proposals from the vendor side much of my career. This book brings out many things that one would assume are obvious but are not.For example N.O.S.E. is about 4 key things that need to be in your proposal and why Needs, Outcomes, Solutions and Evidence. Sant also highlights research showing that the brain expects things in a certain order and how to use that for proposals.

I write proposals almost daily in a b2b selling environment. A particularly important opportunity prompted me to purchase this book, to see if there would be any tips or pointers of use. From the first few pages I was impressed, and expect you will be too.After sending the proposal mentioned above - written with this book in hand - I was delighted to receive a very positive reply almost instantly. Owe much of this to the words on these pages. Highly recommended.

This is a great "how to" book on development of sale proposals and RFP responses with very tangible and doable suggestions/guidelines. I have read several times, have a "dog-eared" copy next to my desk, carry sometimes when I travel, and refer back to it often.I bought a copy for my entire sales team and pre-sale team; I send one out to each new hire in sales. I have also subscribed to his "Messages that Matter" blasts which are very useful as well and have participated in several webinars - they are very helpful.Five Star Book - While some of "Persuasive Business Proposals" is not necessarily rocket science it does offer the topics in a very useful and pragmatic approach. The book is offered in a readable format, but it is also organized for reference later. The book I own is dog eared and worn - that is only after a year. I have sections with "Post-It" tape flags and section marker with binder clips. If you ever have to write a document, letter, proposal, or email to a customer or prospect - and you have not read this - then you probably aren't getting your message across.There are so many sales books out there it is flabbergasting, but most never touch the topic of the proposal - big mistake - if you do all the right stuff in the sales cycle and write a bad proposal - at best you get embarrassed - worst case you lose the business. This offers many of sales traits but also handles the most important and that is your prospect facing documentation.Six Star Workshop - The book is the starting point - a workshop with Tom is icing on the cake. I just hired Tom (after reading the book) and completed a workshop with Tom on "Persuasive Business Writing" skills focused on the sales team, executive summaries, and the organization of materials from front to back. It was absolutely the most effective sales and process training my team has had - evidenced by feedback from the sales executives who said universally that it will make a difference in their results immediately. My team reiterated this by saying: "while we had read in details and begun to practice some of the skills - the workshop accelerated the understanding and adoption, which will translate into improved sales."Don't believe me - read the book.

This is a great primer for writing general proposals. It's chock full of information as well as being very readable. This novel is other worldly amusing, with characters so good they charm and repulse you, and a storyline that is fraught with doom from the first page.To say that Kushner is a master storyteller would be the understatement of 2018. To tell you that her characters, each with a life story so intriguing, how they walk and talk to the point that you forget you’re reading because it feels like they are in front of you. Well, I just told you. She wrote it and you ought to read it.Romy, the protagonist, is on a prison bus with her soon to be prison mates, headed to a new location. The ride and these people alone are an indication of how bleak things are going to get as she is in for one brutal two life sentences with no parole situation.There are codes, rules between inmates, and ways to keep yourself alive within prison. Romy can play this game. She was doing it long before she was behind bars. But by no means is it easy. The struggle is real.A literary light is kindled for Romy when she meets a prison teacher who takes note of her interest and feeds her curiosity with great books. This is just one of many layers to the story.There is an overriding sense of sadness that I felt for each of these women. Even though they are fictional, and each ended up incarcerated of their own doing, some for unthinkable crimes, I could not help but think of their circumstances and how their endgame was inevitable. One takeaway for me is that people are no different whether they have freedom or not. Alliances are formed, stereotypes are prevalent, the weak do not survive, bigotry and hatred abound, a keen sense of intellect is learned quickly inside, and the ignorant are loud.Ooh wee, THE MARS ROOM is one fine, entertaining, and knock-out book. I can’t get enough of Kushner’s writing. What’s next.

Rachel Kushner is a real talent, and the writing is at times terrific in this sympathetic portrayal of a life without hope. However, as in the case of My Absolute Darling, I wonder how degraded human experience can enrich the world. Rather, how explicit the rendition of that experience needs to be. Or how many subcultures are worthy of such attention. Perhaps to my detriment, I see a difference between Arundhati Roy’s Ministry of Utmost Happiness and The Mars Room, not because the subject matter is so different — the travails of outsiders whom others see as subhuman — but because of the behaviors of the protagonists and the descriptions of life itself. Bone and gristle and bodily fluids are not necessarily additive, and this novel had too much of them per unit of insight. Balzac and Dickens described the demimonde, and I, for one, would not have asked them for more detail.

Puts you in a place you don't want to stay. You have to though because the characters suck you in and you have to learn about them. Rachel Kushner is a force.

Although it was interesting to read the story of women inmates that isn't OITNB. But ... The book was poorly executed. The writing and imagery and characters were interesting, but their stories were never really completely fleshed out or brought to some kind of denouement. They just ended. In the case of Hauser, unexpectedly. And then the ending! The book didn't wrap story lines up; it just stopped -- a cop out, if you ask me. It was almost like the author was writing along and she or her editor decided the book was long enough and she just needed to quit.

They say books take a person away from the world they think is reality; Kushner's book sets that premise reeling. The Mars Room is more real than most "real" conversations ya hear at a coffee house. A reader can step into The Mars Room without the slightest suspension of disbelief, still compelled to turn the next page.

This was a fabulous read. I loved it because it offered a realistic portrayal of a girl's life on the wrong side of the tracks but could be anyone with bad luck. I lived in the area that is mentioned so could relate. Fans of Orange is the New Black will LOVE this. My only complaint was the way it ended. There needed to be MORE. Maybe a sequel?

If you wonder how people living on the edge look at life, this book offers a believable, tragic, yet darkly humorous perspective. We meet some bruised but hopeful people who keep trying for a livable existence. Of particular merit are the descriptions of life inside low-level womens’ prisons: much less civilized than what’s portrayed in OITNB. There’s valid male perspective, also. And several questions are offered, about the inevitability of life, once choices are made. This all may sound moralistic and dry...it’s NOT! The characters presented will make you want to mother them- or wish you could have, back when they were kids. Plus: we’re given a crash course in the really seamy part of San Francisco!

This is a dark book without much joy to be found. But it's real, the writing is excellent and it grabs you until the end. I couldn't have imagined the lives described here...but these lives exist. We just choose not to think of them.

"White Cargo" does a deep historical dive into Colonial American slavery, (indentured servants), for "His Majesty's plantations".For 170 years, (1606 -1776), England meted out this new lucrative reality by ridding itself and neighboring countries of its drunkards, dregs, vagabonds, criminals, and urchins. It's believed that 300,000 Europeans were kidnapped and/or sold a bill of goods, (becoming "free willers"). These “free willers” contracted for oceanic passage to the New World by agreeing to indentured service for a promising future.Approximately half would never survive their bondage. Indentured servants generally had a 7 - 14 year contract to toil away on the plantations. The multitudes that were "spirited away", (shanghaied), to America were routinely treated like animals with beatings, whippings, neck irons etc. Of course the "free willers" had no clue of the horrors that awaited them. They believed that America was the land of opportunity and as such would enjoy a prosperous, comfortable life, (once they paid for their passage via laboring in the fields). Nothing was further from the truth.England referred to indentured servants as "chattels" and as such became the property of their new owner/master.The first chattels (slaves) in Colonial America were white Europeans. A majority initially consisted of convicts from England and then a surge of Irish Catholics were "spirited away" to make room in Ireland for the burgeoning British and Scottish Protestant populations. Two days after the American Revolutionary War began the trafficking of white human cargo ended. King George III eventually settled at sending his miscreants and convicts to Australia and New Zealand, circa 1820.Public education in the USA sanitized this cruel chapter in its pernicious beginnings. It's too bad -- as we generally learn from our past. But when history is whitewashed, (no pun intended), then no one is the wiser. As the saying goes, "ignorance is bliss".

This is the history of white indentured servitude (slavery by another name) you are not taught in school. Great Britain used several colonies as off shore prison colonies. Colonial America was just one. Families in Great Britain would pay their debts by selling a child into servitude on ships or into apprenticeships. To think or believe, mistakenly, that ONLY Africans were/are slaves is to be ignorant of history and current events. Read further and find out who the people were that were the financial backbone of the 16th & 17th century's African slave trade. It was NOT the American colonists. Government schools in the US don't want our children to know the information in this book. Read & educate yourselves.

I had an inkling about this subject but it was usually discounted by whoever I tried to get into a discussion or discourse with. Seems most people want to deny the existance of white slavery. I remember reading about indenture servitude in school but it was addressed as a mostly benign institution. Teachers mostly skimmed over the subject.Later, while doing some family ancestory research I discovered a father and son in my ancestry who were obvioiusly indentured. They were Scots.This book was very interesting and enlightening but also very disturbing. Beware. You may have to put it down after reading for awhile and take a break. If you are at all open-minded take a read.There is also a very interesting interview with the authors on You Tube that's worth watching. Lots of resources in the back of the book,too, which validates the research. Very well written.

An excellent work on a neglected if not intentionally ignored subject. While everyone knows of the convicts shipped to Australia, few realize the scheme originated for and was carried on for decades to supply America, even beyond the revolution. The popular concept of "indentured servants" is merely as an expedient and honorable way to seek one's fortune in the new world. The truth is much more sinister. The authors did their research well and cite plenty of primary source material to support it. A must read book, to truly understand the peopling of early America. This book drives home the power wielded for financial gain and political power without regard for human cost. An issue that remains to this day.

The book came in the condition advertised and more quickly than expected. I am doing a presentation with another person in our genealogy group about indentured servants in America, and this is a book we will be drawing on for material. I had no idea the practice was so widespread here in the 17th century. I researched my own immigrant ancestors and found several had come here bound. But I believe they were better treated than many in this book, and they apparently wanted to emigrate. (Sometimes it's the luck of the draw.). It also brought to mind that this practice is still going on and it is UGLY! Human trafficking today is one of the reasons that this book is important. I can't say that I "liked" it...the subject isn't an entertainment...but I am glad to have read it and will pass it on to others.

Excellent history. While visiting Ireland I toured a "White Slave Museum." Everyone should be aware of slavery in everyone's history, some more recent than others. And, everyone should work to ensure this doesn't occur again...to anyone.

This book is so good. The detail amazing but graphic. I know this is what our ancestors went through. Knowing most of them were from ages 10 to 19 is heart breaking is so hard for me to read at times. Endured slaves is what they were called. Most not making the crowded ride over in the bow of a ship. If they were fortunate to survive they did not last for long. One girl kept running away from one house hold until they gave her 500 slashes with a whip. Afterwards, she crawled off and died. Knowing there was nothing left of her body after that many lashings. Anyone with an Irish bloodline needs to read this. It has opened my eyes to so much, and I just wonder where they buried these poor souls at?

Zondervan (the publisher) alwas prints a nice book- I have many. The Authors seem qualified and my complaint is NOT about the book, but about the DISC. That's why I spent almost $30: to get a quality hard-cover, rather than paperback, and the disc to hear the pronunciation as I studied. After 3 attempts to install the AUDIO files from the disc, I met with failure. If the fault is my own, 9I'm not computer "IL-literate"), I still -ANYONE- should not have to "figure out" what to do. Every software I ever purchased just required the disc to be put in and hit "go"! I'll end up keeping the purchase because I try to avoid paperbacks, but it emains that I overpaid for this as I only got 1/2 of my value. Get his: I called the tech support # given on the disc and it's disconnected!!

I embarked on Hebrew studies using this text at the recommendation of the Hebrew language people at the University where I studied Classics. As a resource for learning language I've found it excellent. However, as a non-Christian, I find the commentaries at the end of each chapter a bit annoying. They are definitely slanted toward fundamentalist Christianity. It's all well and good, I suppose, that Christians are constantly searching for Messianic references in the Tanach, but, people, in a beginning textbook aimed at a wide readership, let's omit that sort of thing!

I have a fairly extensive background in languages (German, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Navaho) so felt able to take up the study of Hebrew without any formal instruction. The first text I bought was Page H. Kelley's Biblical Hebrew: An Introductory Grammar. Though I read much of that text, I made little progress. The presentation of elements of grammar was not consistently logical, with chapters building in predictable ways on previous chapters. I was often overwhelmed with new information or unexplained new elements. Finally, frustrated by my lack of progress, I purchased the Pratico and Van Pelt text. It was superb. My learning took off like a rocket. I am developing clear facility with the language. Everything is presented logically with chapter sequences carefully thought out. Diagnostic features of words are highlighted in red to call them out. I have enough experience with language textbooks to know a good one when I see it. This one rivals the Wheelock Latin textbook in its excellence. I highly recommend it. The Kelley text I now use more as a reference book, to look up some of the few things not covered in the wonderful Pratico Van Pelt text.

Learning a new language is quite the undertaking, especially if you attempt to learn on your own without formal instruction. This book is your guide if you want to learn Biblical Hebrew independently. However, like others have suggested, I recommend this and the accompanying workbook. If you're still stuck and you have nobody to help then the course on DVD is the way to go. Once you complete this course, I recommend the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia - Reader's Edition. It has a vocabulary list on every page and once you complete this course, you'll be able to read that BHS Reader's Edition fairly easily.

This book is meant to be used with the workbook of the same name, the "survival kit" and all the other products the publisher pushes. There is no additional, free help such as I found useful when learning Biblical Greek. Rather, this book references a related website that does not exist and the publisher's website, unlike the useful websites that are sometimes connected with textbooks, provides only info on other products you can purchase. In addition, while the publisher provides an answer key for the workbook, it's on the CD that comes with the textbook and it does not work with Windows 7. The CD is supposed to contain additional aids, but I can't access them. Maybe I'm asking too much to expect additional help, but when all questions addressed to the publisher, Zondervan, are answered with a suggestion to buy more of their products, it just doesn't sit right with me.Update: Just received an email from Zondervan that states they will not be updating any of their software and they provided a link where the author supposedly had provided the info from the CD. What I need is the answer key for the workbook and if it's on that site, I can't find it. What's there is a big list of the author's products that are available for purchase.

I do find this book worth the money to learn Hebrew. I think if one is going to be a serious student this book is a must have. I like the break down of the vowels, but it would be a worth while tip to break them down a bit more, or at the least more simplified, for those that are new to any type of Hebrew. For the more familiar ones, this is not a problem but it is for those that are new to Hebrew and may have less college education.I would have like to have seem more explanation especially in the syllabification of chapter 3. This is a hard chapter that, in my estimation, should be explained just a bit more. The reason is the same as I gave above, for those that are just starting the course and may not have advanced skills in any linguistics. The explanations are brief, even though they are on point. The learning curve when one is learning Hebrew is difficult even though it is attainable.For the beginners I would like to see more explanations and more explanation on how to apply the different concepts pertaining to the language to the effectual learning process. Overall, this is a must have book if one truly wants to learn the "Basics" of Biblical Hebrew.

I had to use this text for a class and hated the text. I found the material to be convoluted and organized in a manner unfitting for a new student. It would almost seem as if the author was attempting to impress you with his knowledge base rather then help you learn the basics. I used another text during a different class and found it to be more strongly suited for a new learner of Hebrew.
