This should be required reading in schools. The negative reviews typically involve devout Christians and other faiths who fear the worship of false idols. This is not a religion, it is a philosophy, about how to treat others, about how to treat yourself, about how to live your life recognizing the causes or suffering, and minimizing or elimininating it for yourself and others. It is about compassion, self-control, and happiness, something we all can and should try to increase in ourselves and others while on this planet. Nothing in here contradicts the teachings of Christ, just the opposite. It can help us understand the Golden Rule and other teachings. Buddhism can be your Cliff Notes for a better understanding of the New Testament. Everyone I have gotten this book for has told me it was as if a blindfold was lifted from their eyes, allowing them to become better people and help others do the same.

I wanted to like this book - I really did - but the author makes too many global assumptions about his readers. Here is an example: "You hit puberty, ready to become that perfect, long, lean, hardbody you see in ads. For about 98% of people, that doesn't happen. You may not have cared much about this when you were younger, but you *really care now*.And another example: "Boys want to be tall and buff. Girls want to be curvaceous and toned." Really?Regrettably, this book misses the mark. With the help of a disciplined editor who can prune the author's tendency to assert absolutes this book can be salvaged, but I cannot recommend it in its current form.

as one part of our vacation, we were fortunate to visit a center in which buddhism is practiced. since my kids had had no exposure to buddhistic beliefs before, i thought that buying and reading this book and then discussing parts of it during the drive, hotel stays, tourist walking, might be neat. the kids were not teens, so, i adapted it a bit. the kids really seemed to appreciate the respect and logical approach. they were attentive at the center. after the center, we went to a restaurant in which they had a few "gambling machines" for kids. i replied to my son's request that if he really insisted on gambling $1, he could, but, if he lost, he had to give me his other $1. he ran out and lost. he gave me his last $1. my daughter came over to me and said that i will attract bad kharma by doing that. then, she gave him her last $1. of course, that night i gave him $1 and he returned $1 to her. so, i guess that she did learn and begin to practice some basic elements of buddhism.that's a long story just to tell you that my kids benefited from this book. i enjoyed reading through it and i enjoyed sharing it with the kids.the book is organized well. it is very informative. it is simple enough for teens to understand. it is fun and engaging! it is well written and edited. I highly recommend this book for younger teens with an interest in buddhism or whose parents / friends might be interested in buddhism. if a parent wants to use this book as a basis for teaching younger children, it can be adapted. adults wishing to read this in order to familiarize themselves with basic tenants might find this book to be light reading. that might be good for many of us!overall, i think that this is an excellent book, and i give i an "A-".

I initially purchased this book for my grandchildren, who are now teenagers. Although only ONE of the THREE has read parts of it, the sections they read did spark informative conversations....and what more could one ask for? I read the book often and truly appreciate its offerings...in easy to read, very informative and engaging ways. I think its appropriate for all ages....and when they are ready...the teens (or perhaps young adults...or even older) will return because I'm keeping it with me! I've also shared it with many of my college students in writing courses and they gobble it up...I highly recommend it!

This book was life changing. I've grown up in a Christian family, and it never worked for me. This book showed me not only a religion I could really feel connected to, but a way of life anyone can follow. I read this whole book in the last 3 hours and I feel...different. It's not like I magically changed over 3 hours, it's like I feel ready to take that step into faith I could never find. All this is thanks to this book. The author of this book deserves way more than a review. He deserves to know how much of an impact he has made to me, and other people who have read this book. Buy this book. It'll change you. For the better.

I give this book four stars.It is a perfect spiritual guide for teens and upwards.It explains Buddhism in a simplistic way as it should, I like many switch off when the subject is taken to the extreme.This is an insightful guide for all those on this journey called life.Best of all it let's everyone know aiming for perfection is impossible and will only cause suffering, detaching from such ideas brings us closer to peace.Oh the joy of that notion!So squeeze Buddha in between your lunch box and laptop and follow the Eightfold path!

Excellent book for young adults struggling through teenage years. Sage wisdom and sound advice for many things! While the book does discuss Buddhism, its history and practice, the advice and perspective is instantly usable for any spirituality or religion. I loved this book!

i think my kids are a little young for this book. It starts out assuming that your kid is rebelling and that there is issues with family matters. I didn't like that part, but it is easy to read for younger people.

The illustrations and simple poem are fun to read when your little one is very young, and as they got older they are able to interact with it and play "I spy" on each page. Fun to have a story that transitions through several stages with your child.

Originally published in 1979, this is one of those books that sat in our library until we had children old enough to enjoy it. Our son thought it was ok but our daughter really loved it. So much so that when I forgot to pack it to read on the bus to school one day I had a problem. Fortunately, the Kindle version of the book is very well done with the pages set side by side so that I can read them to my daughter and she can look at the pictures while I am reading. The illustrations are large enough (and my daughter knew the story well enough) that she can still find the 'I Spy' portion of the book while on my phone. With my older eyes, I prefer the tablet but both versions are still quite good.

This book has a special place in my heart... it was the first book I ever "read" (though really, I had it memorized, and just fooled (or if they weren't fooled, they sure pretended to be!) family and friends by "reading" the book by myself! LOL! And now, I read this book to my daughter almost every night. The poetic rhyme of the book makes it easy for kids to learn and remember. The pictures make the book interesting and fun for young minds. Older toddlers/school-aged children will love to try to find the characters hidden in each picture! The large words help parents and new readers move their fingers along under the words as the children try to learn the new words. Familiar characters help make reading less intimidating. I can't say enough about how truly wonderful this book is, and how much this book meant to me as a child, and how much it means to me now as a parent.

This book is an utter delight. I had never heard of it before Amazon recommended it, but my kids are obsessed. My seven-year-old son has memorized it and sings it to the little kids, who often ask to have it read to them.I really like the way there is something for the kids to find/do with each page, but just one thing. We keep moving, but they are engaged.I also felt like all of the drawings were charming and memorable. This will be a new go-to gift for new parents.

I had forgotten how fun this book is! The rhyming is wonderful, but the illustrations are what make it so wonderful. It is truly a seek and find kind of book, where you find new little details nearly every time it is read. For this reason, it is one of those books that will grow with the child for many years to come.

This is a fun and interactive book. It is not too difficult for young toddlers to find the familiar fairy tale characters that the author "spies" in the illustrations. The illustrations are amazing and unique to Allan Ahlberg. I do have to knock off a star for durability. This isn't the thickness of a regular board book and my baby was able to bend the back cover.

This book is one of my favorites to give as a gift for 1-2 year olds. It's a great introduction to I Spy books AND it shows you a bunch of nursery rhyme characters. I love the rhyming, the illustrations and it's fun to search for other things on the page besides each character.

One of my all-time favorite board books & when my kids were toddlers, they loved it too. Beloved nursery rhyme characters hide in the pictures and pop up in unexpected places. The adventure ends with all of them together, having a cozy picnic. Perfect book for little ones & parents can enjoy the humor in it!

I really enjoyed THE (SORT-OF) DARK MAGE so I was eager to tear into this one. I'm going to not give as long a review as usual because there's not really all that much to say. The book is mostly very funny but it spends a long time repeating many of the jokes which were done in the first book and some of which had already started to wear out their welcome. There's also some DREADFULLY unfunny jokes which keep going and going. I also note this book seems to be about half the size of the previous one. That's not, necessarily, a problem but it's surprising and the progression of the plot is near zero.The premise is (sort of) Dark Mage Waldo Corpselover a.k.a Waldo Rabbit and his (sort of) wife, Alice the Succubus, are looking for a third monster to complete the first part of Waldo's quest. The previous book ended with them picking up a homosexual BDSM-loving ogre named Grok. Now, I can imagine a story where there's a homosexual BDSM-loving ogre that's an interesting character but Grok isn't he. Grok is a walking stereotype, albeit one 8ft tall and superhuman, which exists to make the prickly conservative Alice uncomfortable with all of his open homosexuality and kink. Did I mention he becomes a crossdresser too (despite none of those things necessarily having anything to do with each other)? None of which is funny and keeps going and going like the Energizer bunny. The fact Waldo doesn't see anything wrong with either is about the only redeeming quality.Waldo, Alice, and Grok head to a nearby city where monsters are not tolerated despite engaging in a brisk slave trade using goblins. Alice has a connection to the Duke's son and has recently discovered she has the ability to charm heterosexual men, an ability she loathes but Waldo finds staggeringly effective possibilities in. Unfortunately, they're being stalked by Waldo's archlich father who is entirely capable of raising an army to destroy cities (and has begun doing so). They're also being stalked by a White Mage but that's really a minor problem by comparison.The frustrating thing about this book is almost nothing of consequence happens. Yeah, they get into some funny situations but the book begins and ends with Waldo's story exactly where it was. They've managed to help wreck a city, killed a bunch of Thieves Guild members, and permanently tar the reputation of White Mages everywhere (not that they needed help) but the story feels largely insubstantial. Oddly, my favorite part of the story is the Lilith sections as we watch her in a much more serious "Game of Thrones"-esque plot against a rival house that ends on a sour sad note at odds with the rest of the series.I'm still going to read the next novel in the series but this book feels like it relied on some outdated, verging on offensive humor and didn't work for me. About the only reason it's still getting a positive rating is I really do love the characters and enjoy the amount of taking the **** out of popular fantasy tropes which made the first book so enjoyable. I will, however, say I could read an entire book about Lilith.5/10

If you have not read the first book I strongly advise you to do that as it necessary to fully understand and enjoy this one. You may of course disregard my warning and in doing so deprive yourself. Even reading the reviews of the second book without the experience of having read the first will detract from not only discovering the Author's work in the proper manner but demonstrate your lack of character. ***** Continue only if you have read the first book ***** OK I am my own person (you know who you are) SUIT YOURSELF.Yes I gave this Book (?) four stars.... Amazon does not allow partial ratings and it deserves more than three.[The Bad] I liked this offering but as many have pointed out it is a bit short and most readers in general felt unsatisfied at the seemingly rushed ending.[The Good] Again there is a balance between two main [ related ] plot lines (A) Waldo and his Quest and (B) His mother Lilith and the country of Alteroth. There is also a balance between high adventure and low humor.Unlike like many I felt both the (A) plot line and Waldo advanced, keep in mind several things Waldo is male and is sixteen; he has been extremely sheltered and has had no real exposure to the larger world; the elapsed time is at most but a few months [summer has not turned to winter. He is not only learning about Alice, relationships (etc.) but himself. Strangely, I think both Gronk and Cleptus will help him in his development. Note he now has three companions with different skills and worldviews. He has obtained a magical weapon. He has gained experience how long before (if) that translates to useful wisdom is unknown.In regards to the other (B) plotline many I feel are overlooking a larger storyline (i.e.) the conflict between Avalon and Alteroth and the (IMO) role Waldo has to play on that stage. Plus I like Lilith and the characters and subplots, history etc., surrounding her. That thread also has some (very dark) humor of it's own.As for Melissa I think her true value to the story is still developing and she is more interesting that the current limited view gives her credit.In closing I agree it is short much more a short story to introduce new ideas, characters, develop plotlines, fill in characters back stories etc., and to appease the readers. I just hope the Author does not make this the standard for the continuation of the "Saga".Hopefully Waldo and cast will outgrow the level of humor

If the dialog and action are the meat of a story while the plot and character development are the bones, this book is all meat and no bones.I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and humor of this book, much as I did the first one. Gronk is hilarious, "Gronk smash!" However, this book suffers heavily from being an independent release and never seeing a professional editor. I finished reading this in a few hours (because it's much shorter than the first) and realized that literally nothing of significance happened. None of the characters were developed, none of the plot points related to the quest were advanced (I suppose you could count a failure as advancement). All of the major events happen in areas or to characters that are minor enough that looking back all I can think is "wow, I wish I had more Waldo and less *those guys*." And that's another tragedy of this book, because even as short as it is, and as little as it advances the plot of Waldo's quest, if it had spent more of it's length with Waldo, Alice, and Gronk and less time with the "B Team" of characters (despite most of them being very well written), it would have been much more satisfying.To summarize, more concrete plot advancement needed. More focus on Waldo and the main characters (although some side characters are ok, except for Melissa...that chick is the most boring character ever, seriously just kill her off). And make the book a bit longer. These things don't need to be long like the Wheel of Time or Song of Ice and Fire books. Kevin Hearne writes the Iron Druid books about every 1 to 1.5 years and they're pretty short, but something significant always happens in them.Overall this was a good and enjoyable book and I hope the author keeps writing, I love his sense of humor.

Ruth A. Wittmann-Price, PhD, RN, CNS, CNE, CHSE, ANEF, FAAN, is dean of the School of Health Sciences and professor of nursing at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina. Dr. Wittmann-Price received her AAS and BSN degrees from Felician College, Lodi, New Jersey, and her MS as a perinatal clinical nurse specialist (CNS) from Columbia University, New York, New York. She completed her PhD in nursing at Widener University, Chester, Pennsylvania, and received the Dean's Award for Excellence. She developed a mid-range nursing theory, "Emancipated Decision-Making in Women's Health Care." and has tested her theory in four research studies. International researchers are currently using her theory as the foundation for their studies. Her theory is being used by researchers at the University of Limpopo, South Africa, in their campaign, "Finding Solutions for Africa," which helps women and children. Dr. Wittmann-Price was also the appointed research coordinator for Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and oversaw the evidence-based practice projects for nursing (2007-2010). Hahnemann University Hospital was granted initial Magnet designation in December 2009. Dr. Wittmann-Price has taught all levels of nursing students over the past 16 years and has completed an international service-learning trip. Currently, she teaches women's health to baccalaureate students and to students on the MSN nurse educator track. Dr. Wittmann-Price mentors DNP and PhD students and is on several committees at both Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Widener University. Perfect for exam prep; nailed the exam!

This book was one of my go-to texts for studying for the CNE Exam (the other being Billings and Halstead). I passed the exam on first attempt. It is concise, easy to read. I appreciated the organization of the chapters, which helped me to focus on what I needed to know for the exam. In addition, there is an app with extra practice questions (for purchase) associated with the text. It was well worth the purchase for me because; the CNE exam is expensive and I only wanted to take it once! So investing in these resources was a must!

This book was an invaluable resource that was my study guide while preparing for the CNE exam. I am so thankful I purchased it - I passed!

Not impressed with the weak/ repetitive rationales & the countless spelling errors.

I'm afraid that this book just didn't do it for me. The concepts are very elementary, and most of what you can learn can be discovered easily with reading a few articles on-line. The chapter on startup costs are very misleading, as so much depends on the type of restaurant you are building, how much a landlord might pay for tenant improvements, and the square footage involved, among a great many other things.I do advising for hundreds of businesses a year, so I am always seeking new perspectives, but this book didn't really give me any. I can also say that some of the information is very incomplete or in some cases just plain wrong.Here's an example, for context. One of the pieces of marketing advice is to "Use Social", which the author says is a must "Do or Die!", and then spends 3 short paragraphs on the topic, none of which is strategic or constructive. The advice is basically 'use Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram". If that's the level of advice you are looking for, then maybe this book will help you.My teeth are still grinding at the formatting, typos, grammar errors, and other issues throughout the book. I would recommend the author hire an editor to help out with at least that. I think I found an average of one error per page, which was distracting.If there's a pro here, the book is short. Even though it has ~220 pages, it is in LARGE font, double-spaced. It's a very easy read, I'll give it that.It's called a 'Lean Startup Guide', but the concepts of the Lean Startup are 100% ignored. I suspect the author isn't familiar with what that terminology means.Disappointing...

The question of "Why" is the most important one to answer before setting up any business - you need to believe in what you are doing, because it will take a large sum of money, and a lot of your time. "How To Start Run & Grow a Successful Restaurant Business" does a great job of explaining that your reason why needs to be something other than "money" - it will take quite a while for most restaurants to make much profit. I don't know much about restaurants, other than loving to eat, and visit them, but I do know the importance of doing the research before you go out and buy or build a place of your own. There are some great suggestions for alternative types of restaurant, finding the best location, and so on. There are great tips on writing a business plan (very important, especially if you need to get additional funding) that includes details of what your cash flow and profit are likely to be. It even includes suggestions for menus. It seems to me that while all the details will have to differ in your situation, you have no excuses for not covering everything if you follow the outline this book gives you. This book should be essential reading for everyone seeking funding for a restaurant, and for all those who end up on the TV shows that try and 'rescue' a place that was set up by people without doing the planning before jumping in. If you even only have a dream of owning a restaurant, read this book. It will either convince you that you can be a successful restaurateur, or advise you to stick to your day job.

Interesting book focusing on K'iche and Spanish conquerors relations on Guatemala history. Does not really cover in deep the earlier history and United Fruit Company involvement on Guatemala.However is very well written and documented.

Essential for understanding how racism was part of the mix - genocide, politics, etc., of the Cold War era in Guatemala.

How the CIA and several American presidents interfered in this small Central American country and caused the death of 200,000 Indians. Required reading!

I appreciated this book for the insights it was able to give me on a city that I will soon visit, but I found the writing style dry and overburdened with unnecessary details. Several times, I fell asleep trying to make it through the reading. Other times, I would lower the book in exasperation and say to myself, "Is this Grandin's dissertation?" The book is very informative, but it is not an accessible read for the layperson.

A reworking of Grandin's dissertation, "The Blood of Guatemala" refers to the both the national/ethnic/racial identities that defined Guatemala throughout its history and also the literal blood that flowed during the 30 year civil war in which the most repressive state in the hemisphere slaughtered two hundred thousand of its citizens.The narrative centers on Mayan elites of the town of Quetzaltenango (a place name that will probably give trouble to any English-based spell checking program) in the western highlands of Guatemala. It tells the history of the indigenous people, the Spanish conquerors and the Ladino bourgeoisie through the centuries by highlighting several key events: a demonstration in 1784 against state monopoly of liquor production that gave three Spaniards control of much of the economic life and police power in the area, a demonstration that became a riot that almost turned into an insurrection; the 1837 cholera epidemic, part of the world-wide spread of that disease, and the way it was handled and mishandled by national government; and the rise of coffee capitalism and the creation of an export economy based on plantations in the lowlands.Grandin does an excellent job with a complicated set of subjects that include caste, class and national identity and a changing array of ethnic classifications depending on who was in power (who was doing the classifying and who it benefited) at various times.Recommended for those with some knowledge of the history of Guatemala. An understanding of how historians and ethnographers work and some familiarity with academic prose generally would be helpful but not essential to profit from this book

Grandin's research on the Quiche Mayans of Quetzaltennago is exhaustive and well presented. In particular, his central thesis that the Quiches were a social body already divided by the time of the 1954 US-backed coup helps break schismatic thinking regarding the history of the 36 year civil war there that defines the Indians as merely the victims of a violent and complex historical legacy. That said, however, I often found myself asking if the ladinos in the city were similarly divided. Grandin does make some suggestive remarks in this area, but his focus on the Indians of Xela reveals, perhaps, a bias he holds in their favor. Moreover, the book attempts to use the city of Quetzaltenango as a microcosm of the national situation, which for the most part does not follow since the Indians of other highland townships are very different from those of Xela (and even from one another). Finally, I have to mention that Grandin subscribes to currently fashionable theoretical terms (which comes into relief when he talks about the Mayan "body" in his chapter on the cholera epidemic) that may or may not do justice to the social and cultural dynamic he encounters. Overall I would say this is a book worthy of reading despite lacunae in his otherwise critical approach.

If you're looking for a history of Guatemala, this isn't the right book to read. It's a highly detailed analysis of culture, ideology, national consciousness and other such highfalutin intangibles. Some of its passages are overly abstract and burdened by jargon. I get the feeling that it would be a great read for anyone already familiar with the history, but for a beginner like me, the book was impenetrable and boring. Grandin's more historical stuff (like Empire's Workshop) is top notch though.

Jeremy L. Keough, MSOT, OTR/L, FAOTA, is currently a staff occupational therapist at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tennessee. Jeremy earned his undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy from Eastern Kentucky University and a post-professional master’s degree from Belmont University. His professional experiences include long-term care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, work hardening, acute care, and occupational therapy assistant education. Jeremy has served as the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Director at Roane State Community College, during which he instructed the kinesiology course. Currently, Jeremy’s interests include neurorehabilitation approaches, dementia care, functional movement, and volunteering for youth baseball programs and community veterans organizations.  Susan J. Sain, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, is currently a faculty member and academic fieldwork coordinator at Roane State Community College in Tennessee. Susan earned her undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison along with a degree in Spanish. She later earned a master’s degree in Health Promotion/Health Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
