This is a well-written, engrossing, and chilling account of Europe in the aftermath of World War II. My father's family immigrated to the US from the Lemko region of the Carpathian mountains in Galicia shortly after the turn of the 20th century. Though many thousands of immigrants came to the US from Galicia at that time, they and the region are often ignored in standard histories. I was very interested to find that Lowe briefly discusses some Lemko history in this volume. But the entire book is an eye-opener (and, for the most part, a page-turner).More--perhaps all-- Americans should read this book. I was born at the end of the post-WWII baby boom. The history that I was taught in high school and college, and the movies I grew up with, invariably glossed over the aftermath of World War II, creating a triumphalist narrative (the Allies saved the day, and thereafter everything was fine). This combined with several decades of relative peace and prosperity in the US and Western Europe, has fostered ignorance and lulled us into complacency. In fact, as Lowe describes in Savage Continent, winning the war and rebuilding Europe involved messy, less-than-heroic decisions and compromises that reverberate into the present. Ethnic, religious, and political tensions inflamed by the war contributed to horrific violence long after its official end. As a woman, I am grateful that Lowe does not downplay sexual violence, including rape, which was widespread and often extreme. After reading this book, I am left with greater awareness. World War II was catastrophic. For millions, it was a no-win situation. The losses are incalculable. Recovery and rebuilding was not easy or quick.As World War II fades from living memory, we are seeing the reanimation and rehabilitation of some of the philosophies and attitudes that fueled it. We should be terrified.

This book got my attention because I had recently read a ton of books about the war itself. This angle is so important, especially when you consider that the war was largely about the long complex retreat of Germany: in other words, the war had a fast beginning, and a long ending (a result of the "cult of the offensive," one might say - indeed, the German war against the USSR and the Japanese war against the USA are similar in this regard). The author does a pretty comprehensive job, this layman thinks anyway, of laying out the issues. It wasn't just a matter of people living in desperate conditions after a man-made continent-wide disaster, but also a matter of social-political continuity and change. The continuation of ethnic conflict is so depressing.Where the book is a little weak, to me, is in the way the author avails himself of stories that lack credibility. To his credit, he points this out, but that doesn't stop him from using those stories to fill space. One example in particular is the fact that he dwells on a book by someone named Bacque. He points out that academics thoroughly trashed the book, which indicates to me that it is not worth returning to, yet he wastes time and space on it. (This might be worth doing if the book still has a kind of popular life, but I didn't notice that this was indicated.) Other examples are more lurid. At one point he writes of some tales, "And yet such stories are recounted again and again as if they are true" - well, yeah, like the general contents of this book sometimes. The writing is strangely light, leaning almost toward sensationalistic journalism. Some sentences are indicative of a lack of restraint, like, "The struggle of the anti-Soviet resistance is one of the most under-appreciated conflicts of the twentieth century" and "While his comments were certainly misguided..." In other words, there is a bit too much of the presence of the unsophisticated author in this book. Despite the fact that I'm as sympathetic as anyone to the grinding of his anti-Stalinist axe in the last part of the book, some objectivity would inspire more confidence in the content.The book is worth reading for a sense of what happened - indeed, clearly there could be more movies about this era, as there are literally millions of human stories here. It's unbelievable when I think that my parents were safely in first or second grade in America while this was happening.Still, read with caution. Also, as others have pointed out, the amount of time spent on the rise of Stalinism in the countries occupied by the USSR might come as a surprise. It's worthwhile content, but as the stories unfold it seems they belong in a different book. There might have been two books here.

This book IS comprehensive, and covers the hardware of film making in detail. It's more than I need. I purchased "How to Shoot Video That Doesn't Suck," and thought this book would be a good follow up to that book. In truth, this book has way more information than I will ever need. I think it's an excellent source for those serious film makers who shoot professionally, but for the weekend video shoot, it's not necessary.So, if you're a serious film maker, this book will probably serve you well. For the amateur like myself, it's probably too much information to be of any practical use.

I had originally bought the 3rd edition by mistake, but loved it so much I bought the 4th edition.The book is broken up into a preface, 17 chapters and four appendices, and a few other smaller sections. Chapter's 1-8 go over pre-production material, chapters 9-12 go over production, and chapters 13-17 goes over post production. I've reprinted the chapter and appendix titles below, they pretty much explain what each chapter details.Chapter 1. Introduction to Digital and Film SystemsChapter 2. This may not be the most in-depth filmmaking guide in the world, but it certainly must be the most broad. The sheer breadth of well-explained concepts and principles makes this handbook the most useful practical guidebook I've ever read.There's a ton of material in here that will probably not apply to you. Not working with film? You could probably skip "The Film Camera" and "The Film Image." Or if you're handing your footage off to another editor, skip the sections on editing. But I would suggest another direction: Read it all, from cover to cover. The text is all interesting, well-written, and absolutely packed with great information. Even if you never touch a roll of 16 or 35mm film in your life, understanding where we came from and why we've adopted certain standards is knowledge well worth having.I had been making short films and videos for years before picking up this book, and I was amazed at how much I learned. I realized how many things I had been doing wrong - I was unaware of so many best practices and techniques that my next few films were notably more polished and better executed.In short, the book won't make you a professional, but it will make you MORE professional.

It is a very technical book, that goes over each and every step in the development of a film, describing technology, physics, people, budgeting. Definitely worth leading and constantly review again afterwards if you are serious about filmmaking

I'm actually reading this book from cover to cover. Every now and then, I do skip a section- say, like when they talk about film equipment, as opposed to video (which I shoot.) It's very technical, but I believe that knowing the technical issues and technology is essential. Despite the technical bent, the book also has plenty of information on other aspects of film making, such as continuity, mise en scene, etc. I suppose that if you want to get more granular vis a vis the more artistic aspects of film making, you might want to add other books to your library as well. I am very glad I purchased this book.

This book is SUPER detailed. I have the kindle version, and use it as reading material while the sleeping pills kick in. Yes, it's dry and technical... but what do you expect of such an exhaustive tome on filmmaking. I feel like film school won't be worth the money by the time I'm done reading this cover to cover. Looking forward to finishing it (in the next month... melatonin works!)

I bought both the Fodor's and the Rick Steves' books, and both are helpful in different ways. I learned more history and background from Fodor's that helped us decide how to spend our time since we have a full week. It is quite complete and detailed. Yet I loved the travel tips and streetwise orientation provided by Rock Steves. Overall Fodor's is a great learning tool.

Excellent book! First time visiting Barcelona and this book was a must have. Managed to see all the highlights of the city in four days thanks to the advance planning we were able to do with this book.

Solid book. I love Rick Steves books but he tends to favor boutique hotels. Fodors uses larger hotels. All in all a solid book for Barcelona visitors. Wish it included more for those departing Barcelona on a cruise.

This book fills the bill as far as a serious visitor to the city is concerned.It is written with easy to follow guides,and makes itinerary programming simple and straightforward.The illustrations note all the main attractions for the city,as well the highlights of Catalonia and Bilbao are both instructive and easy to follow.It gives a comprehensive view of the city for both the entertainment and eating and entertainment needs.The suburbs are also covered,again in such a way that it would be interesting to track around them as a one or two day excursion.There is just so much to see and do here and this is one book that caters for both.

I haven't used Fodor's in the past and I won't buy another travel guide from them. The book is layed out pretty well but was not very useful. I didn't use it to pick out a hotel so I can't speak to that section but used it heavily to find places to eat. They list a piaya place and in the description say it has some of the best piaya in town. It was some of the worst I've ever had and was on of those super touristy restaurants. We also used the map to find a restaurant Pla (recommended by our hotel) and found that it was not on the exact street the restaurant is showed on the map. The map was missing many streets in the Bari Gothic area which made it very hard to navigate. It also listed the Picasso museum as at top 10 thing to do and we were extremely disappointed in it. That is not the fault of the book but I certainly wouldn't list it in the top 10. Overall I will go back to the Let's Go or other books in the future, they have much better food and attraction information.

The supposed authority on foreign travel; but current 2013 edition is already out-of-date. We visited Barcelona in Apriland many of the restaurants listed were either out of business or had moved locations,,,creating some hectic last-minute dinner plans. One night we ventured over to a 4-star recommended eatery, only to find the place shuttered behind a metal gate. The hotel listings are much more precise. Perhaps Barcelona has a very dynamic, active and ever-changing restaurant scene. We also wrote Fodor's pointing out our concerns.

It had been awhile since i bought a travel book as I was relying on the internet mostly. I found the fodor's book to be really useful. Surprisingly good restaurant reviews in Barcelona. I think this is absolutely worth buying if you head to Barcelona.

This book provids a good background on the Egyptian "revolution" (or whatever we want to call it) of January-Feb 2011. It focuses centrally on the We Are All Khalid Said Facebook page (the arabic one, not the English one that followed). She provides a good deal of information about how it started, and the two admins behind it--one of whom she interviewed extensively (not Wael Ghonim but the other one, whom she considers the "real" activist). She also follows the page through the subsequent developments in Egypt, through the coup that replaced Morsi. Her focus on the Facebook page is both the book's strength and its weakness: a strength because she describes an important event and the people who were involved; a weakness because she focuses too exclusively on the facebook page itself and not enough on what else was going on around it. The book comes off a bit narrow and makes too much of the Facebook page as a way of judging what she considers the political failure of the "revolution." It failed, she says, because the facebook admins chose the strategy of martyrdom (making Khalid Said into a martyr). This strategy doomed the revolution to failure because it purifies Egypt and Egyptians, hiding the problems of society within a false cloak of saintliness.What's needed instead, she argues, is "the Idea," which will require thinking beyond all past ideologies and dogmas. The most controversial part of that utopian line of thought is that Herrera expects this to come from the new evolving "virtual intelligence" that she sees developing out of hackers and other "digital youth," who are experts of the "anti-mechanism" (decoding, revealing, etc.) This argument, on which the book ends, struck me as an especially unfortunate example of cyberutopianism, but from a left perspective.Finally, the book felt a bit "quick." Its documentation was at times slight and its exposition a bit rushed. That said, it's very readable, and short -- one can read this in an evening -- and there's a lot to be said for quick, accessible books.

Thus, apodictically armed with the aforesaid attributes, Professor Prawer's correlative construction constitutes a volume conducive both to neglect of sleep and dinner. Sophisticated, insightful, and incisive, Prawer's work will prove an invaluable addition to the library of any student or scholar of Marx.

She gives a voice to the people behind the anonymous user names, and the struggles the had in constructing the “brands” they made for their approaches to specific causes, and the struggle of keeping those messages intact in the face of not only the regime they oppose, but also the captivating rhetoric of violence or extremism. Through online campaigns on Facebook and the blogosphere like #WeareallKhaledSaid paired with the momentum of the Tunisian revolutions, a few young Egyptians motivated and called to action a larger audience than could have ever been hoped for in pre-internet days. She visited while promoting this amazing book in the U.S. Clearly she has done her homework and shares her results of ways to color from everyday items such as onion skins, bracken, nettle and eucalyptus to projects that are easy and fun. Her ethical resourcing is to be noted and the bundle dyeing is lots of fun. I would highly recommend this book as an important resource in workshops.

I am a beginner at dyeing with plant materials, and I love this book! It has so many beautiful ideas, and it’s very well written. I enjoy reading it and looking at the beautiful pictures. She inspires me to be more conscious of the materials I’m using in my crafting as well. I love her focus on sustainability!

About the Author

Rebecca Dart is a Vancouver-based artist who has been working in the animation industry for twenty years in multiple positions such as layout artist, background design, and character design. My Little Pony: The Movie is the first feature film she’s worked on. This is a fantastic art book for fans of My Little Pony as well as anyone who loves fantasy worlds. My only tiny complaint is that even at 160 pages it still feels like this book could go quite a bit longer. There are tons of beautiful concept paintings, many of which are noted as not having made it into the film, and lots of character concept and reference works. In the section for the Mane Six, they even include RGB value color swatches for them. The art overall is extremely well done and functions as a massive expansion to what the world of MLP is.As for book quality, it's a solid hardcover with good weighty glossy paper that doesn't feel like it'll tear if you mishandle it.

The book is extremely well made with vibrant colors and sketches that make you pine for what could have been. Capturing what made the show a cultural phenomenon in both an artistic and writing standpoint. Though we are reading a book about magical, flying ponies and other mythical creatures, there is something very real underneath it all- and the simple truth that Friendship really is Magic and we are never truly alone, and more powerful than we think in spite of our abilities or disabilities.You can feel the love and passion that was poured into this. One thing I adore is the respect the creators have for their audience, devoid of age. Never at any point is anyone talked down to or things overly simplified, which we all appreciate as young children and adults. In a world so critical of every choice we make, there is a catharsis in seeing flawed, third dimensional characters teaching anything from beginner level morals to some that took me back at how mature they were- lessons we all too often forget as we age. The scrapped ideas and locations in this book are beyond breathtaking. As an animation and story buff myself I knew a lot of work goes into making something as large as a movie- though I was taken aback at just how much these creators brought to life to tell a lasting story. You can't help but feel inspired after reading the book. Nothing worthwhile ever comes easy, as can be seen by the years of conceptualizing and hard work put into this world.

Incredible art and information in this book. Very cool to see actually comparisons to early concepts. Also the Boom vs Flash character models.Some spoilers in this book because of the art of the locations and some info on the characters.

I know, I could be like all the rest of the Amazon kindle users out there, but this art book is REALLY something else. It makes me a bit more hyped for the movie, believe it or not. 😉

I really love hardback books, it is larger than I expected and has a lot of pages and everyone of them are beautiful. About the Author

Danielle Soucy Mills grew up in Massachusetts in a small city by the sea. Like Tina, she started gymnastics on the furniture in her home. She has since been involved with the sport for over 20 years, as a competitor and as a coach. At Rhode Island College, Danielle exercised both her writing and gymnastic abilities, before moving to California to earn her M.F.A in Creative Writing from Chapman University. She currently resides in San Diego with her husband, where she continues to coach and write books for children and adults. About the Illustrator: Kimberly Soderberg is a children's illustrator living in Cleveland, Ohio with her husband, Josh, her two sons, Wyatt and Grady, and her two dogs, Ralphie and Gertie. After graduating from Columbus College of Art & Design with a B.F.A in illustration, her journey to becoming an illustrator in the children's book market began. My daughters (ages 4 and 6) loved this book. Tina Tumbles is the story of a young girl who is inspired to do gymnastics after seeing gymnasts perform on television. When she begins to do rolls and somersaults on the furniture, her mother signs her up for a class. Tina soon learns that gymnastics isn't as easy as it looks, but with a little practice and a lot of hard work, she learns how to flip and tumble safely. It's a great read for any kid who enjoys adventure and likes to dream big.

The story was good educating people about gymnastics but a lot of the pages were difficult to read as the words in the sentences went up and down often running into each other (which is what Tina was doing before classes). A great introduction to gymnastics also a great chart of the various forms that gymnastics use!

I thought it would be a thicker book but I'm still happy with the content. My main complaint is with the shipping. It arrived bent. Really? You can't do better than that? Disappointing.

Read today with 4 year old Kennedie while it was dreary and rainy outside. Her attention was captured the entire book and she was super excited (but not wound up) by the end (which makes Grandma real happy).

A cute story that is well written and nicely illustrated.The lesson to be learned from this story is quite applicable to gymnastics and my kids love to browse the pages.

Amazing book brings a lot of joy to my grandchildren. It is fun, inspirational, practical and provides basics for healthy living. A real GEM, nowhere else can you find so much benefit from your reading.
